ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was
monumental in helping complete this project. I would like to
thank DPS Bangalore South and our principal, Mrs. Anitha
Bijesh ma’am for giving me the opportunity to research this
topic.
I would like to thank my teacher, Mrs. Jabeen and all the tab
assistants, without whose help none of this would’ve been
possible. I would also like to thank my teammate for partaking
in this project with me.
And last, but not least, I would like to thank my parents without
whose help and support this project would not have been
possible.
Thank You.
PREFACE
The study of how acids and bases affect the tensile strength of
fibers is rooted in fundamental chemistry. Fibers, whether
natural like cotton and silk or synthetic like nylon and polyester,
are key materials in many industries. Their strength and
durability are crucial for their performance in products ranging
from clothing and ropes to advanced composites.
This project focuses on understanding how exposure to acidic
and basic environments can alter the tensile strength of various
fibers. By exploring these chemical interactions, we aim to
reveal how changes in pH can weaken or strengthen the bonds
within the fibers, affecting their overall durability.
The importance of this research lies in its potential to inform the
development of fibers that are more resistant to chemical
damage. In industries where materials are exposed to harsh
chemical environments, such as textiles, construction, and
healthcare, this knowledge is vital. By understanding the
chemical factors that influence fiber strength, we can contribute
to creating more robust and reliable materials.
This project emphasizes the critical role of chemistry in material
science, highlighting how chemical principles can be applied to
solve real-world challenges. The insights gained from this study
could lead to improvements in the design and use of fibers
across a range of applications, ultimately enhancing their
performance and lifespan.
EXPERIMENT
AIM
To study effect of acids and bases on tensile strength of fibers.
REQUIREMENTS
Cotton thread, Wool Thread, Nylon Thread, Weight Hanger,
Weights, Hook, Dil. HCL and Dil. NaOH
PROCEDURE
1. Cut out equal length of cotton, wool and nylon threads from
given samples. The threads should be nearly the same
thickness.
2. Determine the tensile strength of each fibre by placing
weights on weight hanger till the fibre breaks.
3. Soak a given thread into a dilute solution of sodium
hydroxide for about 5 minutes.
4. Take it out of NaOH solution and wash it thoroughly with
water and dry it. Then determine its tensile strength.
6. Now take another piece of fibre and soak it in hydrochloric
acid for about 5 minutes.
7. Take it out and wash thoroughly with water and dry it. Then
determine its tensile strength.
8. Repeat the above procedure for samples of other threads.
OBSERVATIONS
Tensile Strength of Fibre
SI Type of
NO Fibre Before After Soaking After Soaking
Soaking in dil.NaOH in dil.HCl
1 Cotton 1.25kg 1.25kg 1.00kg
2 Wool 1.00kg 0.70kg 1.00kg
3 Nylon 1.50kg 1.50kg 1.50kg
RESULT
Tensile strength of cotton thread is decreased by acids and
remains unaffected by alkali.
Alkali decrease the tensile strength of woolen fibre, but acids
do not affect this fibre.
Nylon fibre is unaffected by both acids and alkali.
PRECAUTIONS
1. Thread must be of identical diameters.
2. Always take the same length of threads.
3. Add the weights in small amount very slowly
