2. Following are 2 methods used to measure energy of fuels.

A B

Which method out of these is more accurate and why? 2

1 mark for identification of method and 1 for reasoning.
Method B gives more accurate results as no energy is wasted in the environment and all of it is efficiently used

in increasing the temperature of water.

3 a. Write down the word equations for the reaction of Zinc with dilute hydrochloric acid. 1

Zinc + hydrochloric acid → zinc chloride + hydrogen

3 b. Write down the word equation for the reaction of copper with oxygen. Also describe the observation that
can be done during this reaction.
i. Word Equation: 1
Copper + Oxygen → Copper oxide

b. Observation: 1
copper gets covered with black powder without burning or glowing

4. While performing an investigation on reaction of metals with water, Ali added sodium is to water and observed
bubbles of gas being produced. Ali suggested that the gas produced is hydrogen while 2 of his group members
suggested its carbon dioxide.

i. Which gas do you think it is? 1

Hydrogen

ii. Suggest how this gas can be identified through a test in science laboratory? 1

A lighted splint can be brought near the mouth of the container, if it extinguishes with a pop sound, its

Hydrogen.

iii. Explain if this reaction is an exothermic reaction or endothermic reaction? 1

Its an exothermic reaction as the container gets warmer and if more sodium is used hydrogen that is

produced burst into flames.

5. Explain how can we identify if a chemical reaction is exothermic or endothermic? 1

By checking the temperature of the surroundings. If the temperature of surrounding increase, the

reaction is exothermic. If the temperature of the surroundings decrease, the reaction can be identified

as endothermic reaction.

6. During the cooking process using fuel combustion, do we observe exothermic or endothermic reactions
occurring? Explain your answer. 2
Fuel Combustion is an exothermic reaction as energy is released during the reaction and cooking of

food is an endothermic reaction as energy is absorbed during the reaction.
