Like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly was one of the fathers of rock and roll. He was born in Texas in 1936 into
a musical family - the only person who didn't sing or play an instrument was his father.
Buddy learned to play the piano and violin when he was young. Later, his brother taught him to play the guitar
and he quickly became a very good player.
Buddy and his friends were in lots of different bands and they played anywhere there was an audience.
In 1956 he had his first big hit, That'll Be the Day. This was followed by lots more hits including Peggy Sue and
Raining in My Heart.
The band was popular in Europe and in 1958 they toured Britain. The sound and look of Buddy Holly and
his band changed British pop music for ever. Lots of the famous bands from the 1960s like The Beatles
remembered watching the band on TV and copying them.
In 1959 Buddy Holly and The Crickets were touring the States with other rock singers. They had a
tour bus which kept breaking down so they decided to travel by plane. The plane left Iowa on the morning of
February 3rd and crashed after only eight miles. Everyone on the plane died in the crash.
