Week 3: Understanding Input and Output Devices

Input Devices: Devices used to send data or control signals to a computer.

These devices allow users to interact with and provide data to the computer.

Output Devices: Devices that receive data from a computer and convert it
into a human-perceptible form, like visual, auditory, or printed content.

Input Devices

1. Computer Keyboard- An input device with keys used to type text,

numbers, and execute commands in a computer.
2. Mouse- A pointing device that allows users to interact with graphical
elements on the screen by moving a cursor.
3. Microphone- An input device used to capture sound and convert it
into electrical signals for audio recording or communication.
4. Barcode Reader- A device that scans and decodes barcodes,
transferring the information to a computer system for processing.
5. Joystick- An input device used for controlling movements in video
games or simulations, usually featuring a stick that can be tilted in
various directions.

Output Devices

1. Monitor- An output device that displays visual content such as text,

images, and videos from the computer.
2. Printer- An output device that produces hard copies of digital
documents, images, or graphics on paper.
3. Speakers- Output devices that convert electrical signals into audible
sound for music, alerts, or communication.
4. Headphones- Output devices worn over the ears to privately listen to
audio from a computer or other electronic devices.
5. Projector- An output device that projects images or videos from a
computer or media device onto a larger surface like a wall or screen

Device Type How it Works and

Interacts with the
Computer
Computer Keyboard Input Sends keystroke signals
to the computer for
text entry and
command execution
Mouse Input Tracks movement and
button clicks,
translating them into
on-screen actions
Microphone Input Captures sound waves
and converts them into
electrical signals for
audio input.
Barcode Reader Input Scans barcodes and
translates them into
digital data that the
computer processes.
Joystick Input Registers directional
movement and actions
for controlling games or
simulations.
Monitor Output Displays visual
information (text,
images, videos) from
the computer’s output.
Printer Output Produces physical
copies of digital
documents and images
on paper.
Speakers Output Convert digital audio
signals from the
computer into audible
sound.
Headphones Output Deliver audio from the
computer directly to
the user’s ears in
private.
Projectors Output Projects visual data
from the computer onto
a large surface, such as
a wall.
