Assignment 1: Charting Note taking Method

The charting method of note-taking is a structured way to organize and compare information from multiple sources. This
method is particularly useful when you need to analyze, synthesize, and present information from different perspectives
on the same topic. Follow the steps below to effectively use the charting method.
Instructions:
● You’ve been provided with a set of articles
● Read the articles thoroughly and highlight and annotate important phrases, terms, and ideas. Make notes of
knowledge you already possess.
Step 1: Fill in the grid with data from the provided articles

Step 2: Information Synthesis

● Summarise and critically analyse the information in your notes.
● Identify any patterns, contradictions, or unique perspectives that emerge from the comparison.
● Try to identify patterns or make comparisons across sources and fill in the following chart

Step 3: Mindmapping/ Outlining your analysis

Imagine that you need to explain your topic to an audience that has no idea about the situation/ topic. Reorganize and
arrange the information you’ve read. For example, see the sample outline below for synthesizing information
1) Brief overview of topic
2) The current concern
(i) Stance of article 1
(ii) Stance of article 2
(iii) Stance of article 3
3) Points of similarity/ agreement between all articles
4) Points of Contradiction discussed
5) You own observations/ assessment of the situation
6) Final take-away message
Make your Outline here:
OVERVIEW
Economic assesments of climate change often underestimate or neglect social and environmental impacts, prioritizing
economic efficiency over sustainability.
Non native plants outcompete native species, altering ecosystems and worsening water cycles.
Power dynamics and inequity influence water governance, access and quality.
Stance of article 1
English I Lab FSM Fall 2024

Water as a commodity against water as a human right

Stance of article 2
Prevention of invasive plants to negate its effect on ecosystems.
Stance of article 3
Flawed cost of climate change.
Point of similarity
All of the effects in given article, if not given time and money to prevent them from happening, it would damage our
environment
Points of differentiation
The given articles are not being resolved due to political and economical disputes which results in different opinions
Takeaway message
Coming to an agreement would benefit and result in betterment of the world.

Step 4: Present a summary

Use the information in your chart to create a summary for a presentation that synthesizes the findings. This might involve
discussing the key themes, comparing different viewpoints, or drawing conclusions based on the data you’ve charted.
[refer to the outline above].

Note: Remember to acknowledge the source [using either the author’s last name or article’s title] while referring to their
arguments.
Summary should be around 500-800 words.

The world is a global village. It is changing human life day by day in a better way. But this can also ruin our lives. Many
issues have arose that caused different problems like global politics of water , harmful invasive plants and flawd cost of
climate change. All of these problems are a going concern in this current era. Global politics of water is due to thieves

who steals water from tankers. This leads to scarcity which affects people. One should use water carefully as there is
only a limited amount of clean and drinkable water.
The growing of harmful invasive plants are also creating problems for future. They are very poisonous. People should
cut them off otherwise they would become harmful for us in the future.
The flawed cost of climate change is inaccurately assessed. Economic efficiency should be over environmental and
social justice.
Climate change, invasive plants and water politics are interconnected and can have compounding effects. We should
adopt a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to address these issues. We should promote ecosystem and and
adaptation strategies.
