LESSON NOTE FOR WEEK TWO
THEME: LINEAR INEQUALITY
TOPIC: LINEAR INEQUALITY IN ONE VARIABLE.
DURATION: 40 MINUTES
CLASS: SS2(B,C&E)
DATE: 16/01/2023
SEBJECT: Mathematics
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson students should be able to:
1. Use the inequality symbols correctly
2. Write and interpret linear inequality in one variable
3. Draw the graph of inequality in one variable
4. Solve linear inequality in one variable.
INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE: Scale balance, number line chart, graph board,
mathematical sets.
STEP 1: Identification of student’s prior idea. Students are familiar with inequality signs.
Mode: All students.
Teacher Activity; Recall that two like signs become a positive sign + (+) = + and two unlike
signs become negative + (-) = - , and - (+) = -
Inequality expresses two statements that are not equal. Consider the following symbols
˃ greater than
˂ less than
≥ greater than or equal to
≤ less than or equal
= equal to
≠ not equal to an so on.
Inequality like 3𝑥˃-12 and 2𝑥-y≤7 have unknown or variable, with an index of 1 i.e. 𝑥 = 𝑥1
Inequality with variable of index 1 is called linear inequalities.
3𝑥˃ - 12 is a linear inequality in one variable.∕
The inequality 𝑥˂2 mean that 𝑥 can have any value less than 2.
Consider the number line
O
2
The heavy arrow line show that the range of values that 𝑥 can have, the empty circle at 2 show
that the value 2 is not included. The rule for inequality is;
1. Adding or subtracting with positive number , if a˃b, then a+𝑥 ˃b+𝑥, and a-𝑥 ˃b-𝑥.
Any quantity can be added or subtracted on both side of an inequality
Example: 5˃-3, we can add positive 3 to both sides ie
5+3˃-3+3 =8˃0.
Students Activity: Teacher guide students on how to add positive number without
symbol of inequality remaining unchanged.
STEP 111: DISCUSSION.
Mode : All Students
Teacher: Activity:
𝑎 𝑎
Rule 2, if a˃b, then a𝑥˃b𝑥 and 𝑥 ˃ 𝑥 , provided 𝑥 is positive.
That means both sides of an inequality can be multiplied or divided by a negative
quantity without changing the inequality sign.
Example if
12˃ -6, then multiply both side by positive 2
12x2˃ -6x2
24˃ -12.
And dividing by 2
12 6
˃ -2 = 6˃-3.
2
𝑎 𝑎
Rule 3: if a˃b, then a𝑥˃𝑎𝑥 𝑎𝑛𝑑 > 𝑥 if 𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒.
𝑥
If both sides of an inequality are multiplied or divided by a negative quantity, the inequality sign
must be reversed
Example if 12˃ -6, then 12x(-2) ˂ -6x(-2) = -24˂ 12.
Students Activity : Teacher guides students on the above example
STEP IV: APPLICATION
Mode: All students
Teacher Activity:
Solve 3𝑥 − 5 > −11
Soln
3𝑥 − 5 > −11
Collect like terms
3𝑥 > −11 + 5
3𝑥 > −6
Divide both sides by 3
3 6
𝑥3 > − = -2
3
𝑥˃ − 2.
O
-2
Example 2:
Solve -3˂ 5 -3𝑥 ≤ 11
Take each inequality separately
-3˂ 5 -3𝑥 5 − 3𝑥 ≤ 11
So 3𝑥 < 5 + 3 − 3𝑥 ≤ 11 − 5 divide by -3
2
𝑥 < 23 𝑥 ≤ −2
2
-2 ≤ 𝑥 < 2 3.
Using number line,
0 x
2
-2 23
That means O at -2 means that -2 is included
2
𝑥 𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 − 2 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑡 2 3 (O).
STEP V: EVALUATION
Solve 5(𝑥 + 1) > 20 using number line.
Assignment
Solve the following using number line,
𝑎)3𝑥 + 4) ≤ 5𝑥,
( 𝑏. ) − 2 (𝑥 − 4) > 𝑥 + 5(. 𝑐) 4𝑥 − 3 < 4(. 𝐷) 4(𝑥 + 1) < 3(𝑥 − 2).
