DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 5

“Changes that materials undergo due to Oxygen and Heat”

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
a. Differentiate physical and chemical changes
b. Investigate how the presence or absence of oxygen affects changes in materials.
c. Observe and explain the effects of heat on different materials and identify whether the
changes are physical or chemical.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Changes that materials undergo due to Oxygen and Heat
b. Reference: Science Quarter 1 – Module 2:Changes in Materials Due to Heat and
Oxygen (pp.1-9)
c. Materials:
PowerPoint presentation
Flashcards
d. Values and infusion: Cooperation and observing

III. Procedure/strategy

Teacher's activity Student's activity

A. Daily routine

1. Greetings " Good morning teacher, Good morning

"Good morning class" classmate"

2. Prayer
"Before we start, let us pray first" Dear God,

“Jen pls lead the prayer" Thank you for this day and for all the
blessings we have. Please guide us in
our learning today. Help us to be kind to
one another, to listen carefully, and to
do our best in everything we do. .

Amen.

3. Checking of Attendance
“Now, let us check the attendance,
Maleniza, how many are present and (Maleniza response)
how many are absent today?”

4. Energizer
Ako’y gising, hindi tulog, nakikinig, arf
arf (3x)
5. Room prep
“Okay before we start our lesson, kindly
pick those trash under your chair, sit
properly, eyes on the board and listen to
the teacher

6. Review
“In the previous lesson you discovered
that properties of materials tell about
their uses or importance or whether
they are useful or harmful.”

Who can give me some examples of

useful and harmful materials that we
discussed yesterday?”

“Yes (student)?”
“and how about harmful materials” (student response)
“Yes (student)”

“Very good let’s give them pasabog “Ang galîng, ang galîng,hmm pasabog”
clap”
I hope you’ll understand the previous
lesson and let’s move on”

B. Lesson proper

1. Motivation
“4 pics 1 word”
4 Pics 1 Word is a word guessing game.
It presents you with four pictures and
then tasks you with guessing what Burning
specific word fits with the theme of the Melting
photos presented. Chopping
Rusting
Words* Change
Burning
Melting
Chopping
Rusting
Change

“Very good let’s give them pak-bet clap” “Ang galîng, ang galîng,hmm pasabog”

2. Lesson
“Have you ever wondered that when you
bite into an apple and leave it exposed to
the air and it turns brown”
“This is an example of changes in matter.
We all know that matter is a substance
that occupies space”
Changes in matter - refer to the
transformation of a substance from one
form to another. (Listening)

Two ways that materials change

Physical changes - happens when the
materials change in shape or size but
the substances or particles making up
the materials are still the same.
Ex. (Picture)
- Chopping carrots, broken glass,
crumble of paper
Chemical changes - is a change of
materials into another, new materials
with different properties and one or
more than one new substances are
formed.
Ex. (Picture)
- Cooking egg, burning, rooting
orange
A. Presence or absence of Oxygen
• Oxygen is a part of the air that
surrounds us. It has effects on different
materials.

-The presence of oxygen in the air can

cause chemical change on materials.
Ex. (Rooting, rusting, burning)

“The changes in the color of the inner

fleshy part of the apple is due to its
exposure to oxygen. When the apple is
cut molecules of the oxygen in the air
can react with the diff enzymes present
inside an apple cell this process called
oxidation”

● Oxidation - is a chemical
process. It is defined as a
process that occurs when atoms
or groups of atoms lose
electrons.
● Rusting - is cause by the
reaction of iron with oxygen
present in the air
● Combustion - is a chemical
process in which a substance
reacts rapidly with oxygen and
gives off heat
For example:
“When you lit a candle it's wick burns if
oxygen and wax is present”
“Will the fire continue it’s flame in the
absence of oxygen?”
“We will cover this lightened candle with
the glass take a look”
“running out of oxygen makes the flame
go out”

B. Application of heat
•Heat -(high temperature )is the form of
energy that is transferred between two
substances at different temperatures.
Ex. (Picture)
Cooking, melting

IV. Evaluation
1.Recall
"Now that we've discussed
physical and chemical changes, let's
review what we've learned. I have some
flashcards with pictures, and your task
is to tell me whether each one shows a
physical change or a chemical change.
Let's apply what we've just talked
about!"

*Flashing cards Random picking recitation)

Ripening of fruit Ripening of fruit - chemical change

Rusting of iron Rusting of iron - chemical change
Boiling of water Boiling of water - physical l change
Pounding of garlic Pounding of garlic - physical change
Firewood as a fuel Firewood as a fuel - chemical change

“Very good let’s give them pasabog “Ang galîng, ang galîng,hmm pasabog”
clap”

2. Activity/Quiz
Title:“123 go!"
Mechanics:
"1, 2, 3, Go!" is a game where all
students participate. They must choose
either the number 1, 2, or 3 as their
answer to each question. Students who
select the correct answer move on to
the next question, while those who
choose incorrectly are eliminated from
the game. Each correct answer is worth
2 points. This will be your activity/quiz”

Questions:
A. What change will happen to the Answers:
slices of potato if they will be exposed to A. 2
oxygen in the air? B. 3
1. Color will change from brown to white C. 2
2. Color will change from white to brown D. 1
3. The color will not change E. 3

B. What causes the rusting of iron nails

or iron made materials in a wet cloth?
1. presence of heat
2. Absence of heat
3. Presence of oxygen

C. The eggplant/apple in the experiment

turned its color from white to brownish.
Which statement is NOT TRUE?
1. The presence of oxygen caused a
change in its color.
2. The absence of oxygen caused its
color.
3. The color of an apple/eggplant
changed when it is exposed to
oxygen in the air.

D. The candles melted by the

application of heat. What change took
place when solid candles became
liquid?
1. physical
2. chemical
3. no change

E. Water is the primary cause of rust

because water contains ___?
1. hydrogen
2. carbon
3. oxygen

V. Assignment: “Observe Me!”

“For your assignment, observe a cut
eggplant and in 1 whole sheet of paper,
answer all the questions provided.
Please include pictures as proof of your
observations.”
Materials Needed:
- Eggplant
- Knife (parent-supervised)
- Plate

Instructions:

1. We will cut an eggplant. Observe

what happens right after it’s cut.

2. Write down what you see.

3. After 5 minutes, observe the eggplant

again and note any changes.

4. After 10 minutes, observe it one more

time and write down any differences.
(provide a picture of the eggplant in
each table of observation)

After peeling After 5 mins After 10 mins

(picture)

(description)

● Write a short paragraph

describing what happened to the
eggplant and explain if the
changes were physical or
chemical.

Closing

Okay class this is the end of our lesson “Goodbye teachers, thankyou for
for today, I do hope you learned teaching us, see you tomorrow”
something from the teacher and thank
you for your cooperation. You may have
a great day! See you tomorrow!"
