integrators play a very important role supporting the food
and beverage industry. By building standard or customized
skids, they provide complete solutions. Due to cost cut
backs, more and more “engineering” is being transferred
from the producers to the OEM’s and integrators. Some
food manufacturing companies do not have the know-how
or expertise to build their own plants. Subsequently most
new installed equipment is sold to OEM and integrating
companies. The end-user business is mostly MRO business.
The end-user may be prepared to pay more money but may
ask for more added values.

Endress+Hauser to educate our customers about the depth and
breadth of our product basket—as it most relates to the customer’s
needs. It is a differentiator that Endress+Hauser is the only
supplier with such a broad product basket giving us the ability to
become a single source supplier of instrument at best or at least a
valuable partner. What is unique about the product basket is the
instruments are designed for the market and not “adapted to suit
the market.”

Endress+Hauser can help our food and beverage

customers by:

• Understanding their process and process requirements. We

gain their respect if we can demonstrate we know what
their needs are and are able to provide solutions rather than
components.
• Assisting in their goals to maximize yields, decrease production
costs, decrease product loss/rework and produce within Good
Manufacturing Practice (GMP). This can be accomplished by
minimizing process variability by enabling more stable process
measurement with lower “total” cost of ownership.
• Tightening their material balance, production repeatability
and product movement by supplying accurate, repeatable
measurement solutions.
• Improving safety by providing instrumentation designed for use
in food manufacturing environments that meet FDA (Food and
Drug Administration) 3-A and EHEDG sanitary requirements
that can support their HACCP plans. HACCP (hazard analysis
critical control point) is a systematic approach to ensuring
quality and safety, not unlike SIL for the chemical industry.

production requirements.
• Knowledge about the industry’s processes and regulations makes
Endress+Hauser a well accepted partner.
• Endress+Hauser works to stay up-to-date with future requirements
of the market.
• Endress+Hauser provides certified life cycle services such as
calibration and documentation.

The Food and Beverage Industry is not so much driven by legal standards like the Pharmaceutical Industry. The requirements end mainly
at the material that should be used. Some design criteria, like 3A for the US Dairy market are binding as well. But here the private
standards close this “gap”. ISO 22.000, International Food Standard, British Retailer Consortium and Global Food Safety Initiative are much
more detailed.
They cover topics like tracking and tracing. This opens as well a chance for recorder business, but even more for quality related
applications, that are needed to create automated reports. These sensors will then need to be maintained and calibrated by a certified
provider. This is our next opportunity to use the service as a door opener.

The measurement of quality relevant parameters and how to ensure, that these parameter are measured the right way, is a clearly defined
section in the norms, as the requirement to use hygienic designed equipment is. Both are best solved with Endress+Hauser technology.
These kind of topics can be discussed in the workshop, but it is much more efficient, to discuss with the plant manager.

Keep in mind
• In the hygienic/sanitary parts of the production facilities, instrumentation needs to follow regulations, but other parts of the facility are
just like industrial plants and standard instruments can be used. This includes steam, wastewater, gases and other utilities.
• Once we understand the customer’s process, Endress+Hauser instrumentation know how can be used to optimize quality, yield and
capacity. Additionally, the flexibility of production facilities can
be improved.
• Endress+Hauser’s instrumentation is designed to bring the best results, without any compromise in cleanability or hygienic/sanitary
production. Certificates from 3-A and EHEDG validate this statement. All materials in Endress+Hauser instruments conform with FDA
requirements.
• Controlling material flow is not just important for the financial controller, but also for tracking and tracing of materials and products.
• Endress+Hauser supplies full lifetime support, starting with the engineering of the right solution, supporting installation and
commissioning, helping to optimize operation and keeping the results stable by calibration.
• To some food and beverage customers, certified and documented instrumentation and service is very important and this can be fully
supplied by Endress+Hauser.

What is involved in installing an existing Coriolis meter in
your plant?

to vibration and features a compact, straight-through design.
Promass behaves like an integral part of the system piping.

preventive maintenance?
Point out that with the Proline® Promass 83 no braces, bars, cement
pads, or pipe supports are required. Note that our meter is immune
to vibration and features a compact, straight-through design.

Do they ever have problems with clogging flow tubes?

Point out that Endress+Hauser pioneered a self-draining design
that eliminates problems with clogging. Endress+Hauser has been
making self-draining flow tubes since the 1980s, and now even
offers a single straight-through flow tube, the I sensor. Others have
imitated us, but we set the standard when it comes to investment in
innovation, and the resulting innovations. Our self-draining flow
tubes eliminated the problems with drainability many have had for
years with other flowmeter designs.

Keep in mind:

Mass flow measurement is increasing in popularity. The costs of

ingredients are measured in weight. Mass balance of a process can
be used to minimize product loss, control inventory, and ensure
repeatable production. the multi-variable functionality (mass, volume,
density, °Brix, Temperature) allows use in a variety of applications.
Life cycle cost compared with other technologies to low due to
reduced calibration and maintenance costs.

In-line quality control statistics are able to reduce time and effort
associated with secondary grab samples and lab adjustments.
Eliminates product recirculation while increasing efficiency and
higher capacity in most applications.

All volumetric flowmeters change the reading with the temperature.

For example, using a magnetic flowmeter metering cold media into a
tank, the volume would not be balanced after warming up. Coriolis
meters are always temperature compensated mass eliminating this
error.

Conversation Starters

How do you currently measure density in your process?

How much time or money could you save by monitoring density in real
time?
Companies currently use a variety of instruments for density measurement
depending upon their process requirements. Some like Hydrometers have
a less expensive up front cost but are prone to measurement errors due
to operator mistakes. Other instruments like an Anton Paar device are
more accurate but typically more expensive. Neither the hydrometer or
Anton Parr measure density in real time. Both require a technician to pull
a sample and take it to the lab for evaluation. The Liquiphant for Density
is ideal for monitoring real time changes in density from the control room.
This frees up technicians for more important tasks during the initial stages
of the process until a final density measurement is required.

Real time measurements also provide improved monitoring and quality

control. By being able to more closely monitor your process you will be
able to achieve more consistent or improved quality and less potential loss
of product.

Product Highlights
• Reliable liquid level detection in storage, balance, mixing, and
receiving tanks
• Unaffected by process properties and conditions such as material
buildup and foam
• No calibration required, simplifies installation and maintenance

Conversation Starters Liquiphant M installed in a jelly process pipeline

How much does it cost you in product losses and cleanup costs each
time you have an overspill?

How much do you think you can save if you don’t need to
recalibrate your point level switches?
The most common point level switch used in the food industry is
the conductive or capacitive type. These are low cost devices, but
often require frequent recalibration. Conductive switches are also
sensitive to foam and coatings. The Liquiphant M works right out of
the box, will never need recalibrating, and works in virtually
any application.

Do you know how much you spend on replacing or reconditioning

positive displacement (PD) pumps?

PD pumps that are allowed to run dry will be damaged. For

approximately $400, Liquiphant M can be used for empty pipe
detection, allowing the pump to be switched off before it runs dry.
Reconditioning a $5000 PD pump can cost up to $2000.

Show OEMs and integrators the ease of use with Liquiphant M.

Point out to this group the ease of use and installation,

especially since Liquiphant works in virtually any application,
without calibration

Liquiphant installed in a process tank for empty and

maximum level detection

Keep in mind:

The Liquiphant can be universally applied to virtually any application

where a liquid needs to be detected, such as tank level and empty pipe
detection. It is unaffected by foam, turbulence, and fluid properties.
Requiring no calibration or maintenance, the Liquiphant is simple to
use and cost effective. Aseptic storage is increasing in popularity. Since
access to these tanks are restricted, the function monitoring features
of the Liquiphant is of particular interest. The benefit of no calibration
applies here as well.

Liquiphant T will indicate corrosion issues or malfunction on the outside.
Liquiphant M and S even have circuitry that does a shelf check every
minute or less. No need to remove from process and perform a functional
test.

How do you protect the environments from overspill of hazardous

chemicals?
The Liquiphant T is a safe choice for spill containment detection.

How often do you have burned coils or leaking seals on

your pumps?
A Liquiphant T prevents a pump from running dry and thus saves motor
coils and pump seals. One seal a year less will pay for several Liquiphant
T’s.

Conversation Starters
How much time a year do you spend repairing your
paddle switches?
It is very common that service departments spend a lot of time
changing motors, bearings and couplings on paddle switches. This
takes a lot of time and switches could have been unreliable for quite
some time before a spill actually proves that.
How often did you experience a paddle switch not switching when
it should have?
Paddle switches are maintenance intensive. If you do not maintain
them, the likelihood of a paddle not switching when it should is
high and will result in spills and loss of production.

Conversation Starters
How often do you have to calibrate your hydrostatic
pressure devices?
Radar transmitters do not require periodic re-calibration
Do you compensate for density and temperature changes of your
products in storage tanks?
Radar is not influenced by changing products or temperatures.
A lot of oils in diaphragm seals are not food grade and can
contaminate a batch. Is the oil in your pressure device food grade?
Radar is contact free and there is no oil inside. There is no risk that
the food product is contaminated.

Keep in mind:

Hydrostatic level measurement is the most common

principle for level measurement in sanitary
applications. Microwave radar can be applied in many
applications and is gaining popularity. Applications
such as syrup, additives, and beverages are often ideal
applications. Keep in mind that foam may be a limiting
factor. The addition of aseptic storage tanks opens up
new opportunities for non-contact radar devices.

Microwave radar is unaffected by density change.

Be aware that the level will change as the temperature
changes due to expansion of most fluids.

Conversation Starters
How often are you replacing your existing hydrostatic level devices?

Use this question as a lead-in to discussing the customer’s return on

investment... Talk about the Deltapilot S Hastelloy C diaphragm and
increased sensor life, corrosion resistance, etc.

Are you currently using a “modular” transmitter?

Discuss the Deltapilot S replaceable sensor / electronics which

makes on-site repair faster, reduces down-time, and simplifies spare
part costs.

Do you have problems with moisture entry during wash down? Or,
do you have problems with moisture entry due to condensation?

Point out Deltapilot S is hermetically sealed which provides full Deltapilot mounted in tank
protection against moisture condensation and wash down. You
can tie this point back to ROI and discuss long-term reliability and
life-cycle costs.

Is your hydrostatic sensor designed to be a level sensor?

The Deltapilot is a specific level instrument supplying linearization

and direct volumetric calculation opportunities.

Keep in mind:

Hydrostatic level is the most common method of continuous FMB70 as remote version in condensate application
level measurement used for sanitary applications. The benefits of
hydrostatic level measurement include immunity to foam, turbulence,
and changes in media conductivity. Hydrostatic level transmitters
can be universally applied to any tank size, large or small. The fast
response and high accuracy allows it to be used in small balance
tanks with rapid level changes. Endress+Hauser offers a wide range Primary Differences between FMB50 and FMB70
of sanitary process connections, which include flush weld spuds
or Tri-Clamp fittings, which ensure cleanable, safe operation. All • Housing (FMB70 has a dual chamber housing vs.
pressure transmitters, which use oil-filled sensors, will be affected single chamber on FMB50)
by temperature variations due to the expansion of the fill fluid.
Deltapilot S is not exempted from this, but the advanced temperature • Size and weight (FMB50 is smaller and lighter)
compensation and sensor design make it the best in the industry.
• Display position (FMB50 on top, FMB70 on side)
Also keep in mind that applications with changing densities are not
good candidates for hydrostatic level measurement. • Accuracy (0.1% vs. 0.2%)

Conversation Starters
Ask about the customer’s experience with non-glass electrodes.
Non-glass electrodes have been available for several years but have not
had the success that was expected. Issues with mechanical strength of
plastic Tri-Clamp and glued-on sensors have reduced the confidence
level. With other manufacturer’s versions, often the connector plug
between the sensor and cable is also weak. With our non-glass design,
Endress+Hauser has addressed these issues. Also, we are the only
supplier to have a solution to protect the sensor from the caustic CIP
cycles by using a retractable holder.

Are you sure to find all the pieces of broken glass electrode before your
product is packed?

Do you have to have a logbook, where all items made of glass

are mentioned?

Sensors with Memosens technology have integrated

electronics that allow for saving calibration data and other
information such as total hours of operation and operating
hours at very low or very high pH values. When the sensor
is mounted, the calibration data is automatically trans-
ferred and used to calculate the current pH value. Storing
the calibration data in the sensor allows for calibration and
adjustment away from the measuring point.

ISFET Applications
Since most pH measurement is done by manual sampling, most
opportunities will take time to develop. Engineers, operations, and
sanitation crews need to feel comfortable with in-line measurement. Talk
to them about where they measure pH today - keep in mind that most
measurements are done through manual sampling, so you need to talk to
the chemist or process engineers.

What controls do you have in place today to optimize CIP
detergent usage?

If you look at your CIP control, what would your savings be if you
could activate your CIP return switchover 1 minute faster in terms
of energy, detergents, waste treatment and product loss?

How do you know which product is in your pipe?

Conductivity is often a very good indicator of what is in the pipe,

vital for the ATF (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms). Fieldcheck™ has also been used by additional
food and beverage manufacturers to produce documentation vital for HAACP and supporting in-
house auditing methods to ensure process efficiency, safety, and quality.

More and more companies are outsourcing maintenance functions such as calibrations repairs.
Most users have a poor CMMS ( Computerized maintenance management system) and need help
to organize and make information available. The W@M portal can be a great tool for them. Here
are some questions to ask that can help you identify and qualify service opportunities.

What CMMS system do you use today? (SAP PM, Maximo, etc.)
How good is your data?
Who has responsibility for the system?
How many points are in there?
In the event of a problem, How long does it take to find relevant information and rectify issue?
How do you manage your spare parts and repairs?
What is the impact on production if an instrument fails, cost of downtime, etc?
How much time does it take a technician to find the correct instruction manual?
How often do you need to call for external support from manufacturer or 3rd party service
company?
In a perfect world what would a solution look like?

Does your current manufacturer provide all meters from a single
production center?

If not, how do you ensure they are all calibrated with the same,
auditable procedures to ensure your confidence that what you
receive will be the same every time?

When you need a re-calibration, where does the meter

travel and can you be sure it will return to you in “as
manufactured tolerances?”

At minimum, is your documentation and traceable accuracy

accredited by a third party or is your meter accuracy or process
quality calculation based on a self-certified supplier?

How long can you wait for a sensor that was sent in for calibration?
