Question 1
A football team records the number of goals scored each game. The scores are:
4, 2, 1, 5, 3, 1, 2, 4, 4, 5, 5, 2, 6, 3, 6
a) Represent the data in the table below.
Score Tally Frequency
1 2
2 3
3 2
4 3
5 3
6 2
Total 15
b) Create a histogram to represent the number of goals scored.

Question 2
a) Describe the following plots as either symmetrical, right-skewed (positive skewed) or left-
skewed (negative skewed).
Symmetrical Right-skewed (positive Left-skewed (negative
skewed) skewed)
Mean Mode Mode Mode
Median Median Median
Mean Mean
b) Describe (by labelling the arrows) the position of the mean, median and mode in each of
the diagrams above.
Question 3
The weight of students at a school recorded in the following histogram:
a) Describe the shape of the histogram (positive or negative skew or symmetric), refer to the
mean and median as part of your response.
The histogram is shown as it is negatively skewed to the left; the medium (middle) would be close to
the top of the graph (= 90) because half the value is either side of that value, so the mean is –
approximately 85
b) Interpret the data to draw a conclusion about the modal weight of workers.
The weight of all the workers is between 95-100 category.
Question 4
The following data represents the arm span of boys and girls in a class, measured in
centimeters.
Boys: 1.56, 1.49, 1.82, 1.58, 1.66, 1.61, 1.60, 1.64, 1.66
Girls: 1.39, 1.47, 1.62, 1.60, 1.46, 1.51, 1.63, 1.47, 1.53
a) Create a back-to-back stem and leaf plot to represent the situation.
Key: 15/6 =15.6

1.3 9
9 1.4 7 6 7
8 6 1.5 1 3
6 4 0 1 6 1.6 2 0 3
1.7
2 1.8
The mean and median of both data sets is displayed below:
Mean Median
Boys 1.63 1.61
Girls 1.52 1.51
b) Describe the shape and skew of the distribution of the Boys arm span, refer to the
mean and the median of the data for both.
Positively skewed; as the median is 1.61, but the mean 1.63, which is to the right of the median.
c) Interpret the data to draw a conclusion about the whether boys or girls have longer
arms. Explain the reason for your response.
The average (mean) arm-span for the boys is over 10cm more then the girls (1.63, 11cm more then
1.52) of the middle (median) boy is 10cm more. Boys have a winder arm then the girls (not impacted by
Outlier.
Question 5
The following data represents the amount of time students in a Year 9 class could hold their
breathe.
88.4 91.5 92.1 93.3 93.9 94.7 95.0 95.3 95.5
95.6 95.6 96.3 96.5 96.9 97.0 97.0 97.0 97.3

105.2 105.6 105.6 105.7 105.8 105.9
a) Create a frequency table for the above data.
Time Class Frequency Time Class Frequency
88-<90 1 100-<102 11
90-<92 1 102-<104 7
92-<94 3 104-<106 8
94-<96 6
96-<98 11 Total 60
98-<100 12
b) Create a histogram for the above data.
