LESSON 2 ANIMAL/ FISH RAISING

In the course lesson, the pre-service teacher (PST) should be able to:
Intended Learning Outcome/s:

Demonstrates an understanding of scientific processes in animal/ fish raising.


Applies knowledge and skills and develop one’s interest in animal/fish raising.

Introduction:

Animal / Fish Raising


• High protein food, the most important livestock in the Philippines.
• It gives farmers additional source of income.

What is animal raising?

Animal raising is a poplar backyard


business, as well as means of livelihood of
Filipino families. It is one of the most
important industries in our country today.

SWINE RAISING
Swine raising is profitable business. Many products are derived from swine meat or
pork. Even the protein is derived from its meat.
Two major types of Swine:
a. The Native Variety
b. The Imported Variety

a. Native Variety
 it is commonly found in rural areas.
 They eat palay or meal leftovers on ground
as they simply loiter in the backyard.

b. The Imported Variety


 Yorkshire
 White in color
 Ears are erect and forward
 Easily adapts to confinement
 Has fine quality meat

2. Landrace
 White in Color
 Square ham, short legs, and large dropping ear
 Easily get sunburn, insect bites and skin
diseases.

3. Duroc- Jersey
 Light to dark red color
 Superior growth rate
 Good mothering ability

4. Hampshire
Long legged and slender body
White belt around the body, shoulder and forelegs.
Can be raised in rugged condition.

Proper Care:
 Bathe the hogs everyday
 Keep the pigpen always clean
 They should be immunizing at early age
 Feeds should have necessary nutrients for growth and fattening.

COW RAISING
 BEEF is meat from cows. It is also rich in
protein and it commands a higher price
than pork. Cows can be raised and
fattened in spacious green farm.

 Cow Breed:
A foreign breed is good for fattening. This includes Brahmans, Tharparkar, Indu
Brazilian, and Santa Gertrudis. These are common breeds raised here.
 Other cow breeds:
1. Milking Shorthorns
 Red or white in color combination
 Tall body
 Big erect ears
 Tight chest

2. American Brahman

 Grayish white in color


 Long horns with a hump on a shoulder
 Long dropping ears,
 Long and round shaped bod

3. Red Polls
 Thin legs
 Hornless
 Hump on shoulder
 Fat and Fleshy

4. Guernsey
 Fawn or brown skin color with white markings
 Long head
 Wide forehead with white shield
 Short horns, small ears

Proper Care:
Bathe the cow at least once a week
Keep the animal and its housing clean
Always provide 30-40 grams of salt everyday
Be observant of sign and sickness

 Goat Raising

In raising goats, you need to have:


1. Housing

Goats can be sold in either meat or milk.

Proper Care:
They can be raised solely in the grass
Guard or leash your goats
Provide a plenty of water and shelter
Always keep the floor of your shed clean to avoid any infection or disease

 Duck raising

Ducks can be raised the same ways with the chicken


They gave us meat and eggs.
Duck eggs are made into salted egg and “Balut”

Two Kinds of Ducks:


1. ITIK
 Light to dark brown in color
 They are massive producers of
eggs
 They don’t hatch their eggs.

2. BIBE
 White feathered duck
 They have tasty meat
 They sit on their eggs and can be hatch 12 to 15
eggs to a sitting.

Proper Care:
1. Grow ducks according to agee.

3. Shelter should be elevated so it would not flooded
4. Have feeding ratio schedule
5. Always keep the shelter clean

 Fish Backyard Fishpond

Importance:

 Fish raising is easy to prepare, have minimal expenses and profitable
 It can be a profitable hobby.
 It can begin a big business
 It inculcates good character traits like industry, perseverance, resourceful and
creativity

Requirements:
1. availability of Suitable Fish stock
2. Supply of fresh water
3. Soil
4. 4.Topography of the site
5. Drainage
6. 6.knowledge of sources of feeds
7. 7. Knowledge of feeding requirements
8. 8.Knowledge of pond construction
9. 9. knowledge of fish stocking

Proper Care:
1. Feed fish properly
2. Use antibiotics as food additives
3. Use good fish stocks
4. Maintain water cleanliness
5. Remove dead fish immediately
6. Avoid over handling of fish

1. Some of the hazards or harm to be avoided in raising animals:


1. Animals can directly cause injury such as skin cuts or release of toxins. Animals
can transmit also certain infectious diseases such as salmonella and leptospirosis.
2. Confining so many animals in one place produces much more waste than the
surrounding land can handle. This condition results in pollution.
The accumulation of animal waste causes respiratory problems, skin infections and other
diseases.

3. Pesticide exposure can cause short-term and long-term illness to the caretaker.
Those who prepare the pesticides can be exposed to toxic chemicals due to spills,
defective. Missing or inadequate protective equipment.
4. Noise from livestock can badly affect your ears.
2. Ways to prevent hazards caused by animal raising
1. Regularly walk around or inspect the farm to see if there is damage in the
fences.
2. Make sure everyone involved in the business understands and uses safety
procedures. Ensure that everyone can do first aid in case of emergency
3. Make sure that all equipment is in good condition.
4. Understand and follow safety rules/ guidelines.
5. Ask the help of an expert in preparing the safety guidelines to be observed
when in the farm.
6. Use appropriate safety equipment in animal/fish raising.
