the clues are right there you just embed
the clues
so when you click on here
you'll see the clues pop up as you hover
over
each of the squares that have that
little black triangle delta
on them so um that's how the kids will
get their clues all right so let me show
you how to do this
you can put a word bank in you don't
have to um for my pre-ap
classes i don't put a word bank in but
for my regulars i'll put a
word bank in and then also for like my
els or collabs uh
that may need a little more a little bit
more assistance what i'll do is i'll
add a letter like for instance let me
put in the m
here um or whatever the you know
to help them so um of course you have to
make different copies
to do that so let's get started the
first thing you got to do
the very first thing you want to do is
you want to create a list you want to
create a list of
what it is that you want to make a word
a crossword puzzle out of
and so again i'm just using this as a
review um so
i've already created a list of
vocabulary that
i just came up with a couple of quick
words to show you what i'm doing
next what you want to do is you want to
open up
puzzle maker so if you google puzzle
maker
you're going to be hit with this
discovery
channel or web page and this is a pretty
cool web
good web page it does a lot of different
things for instance
um you can uh come up with different
math
uh puzzles this used to be one of my
favorites when i taught math
um but there's a lot of different ones
like the double phrases
are really good so there's you might
want to try this out and see
all right so we're going to create a
crossword puzzle so you're going to
click on crossword
and it looks pretty simple it looks it
just follow along with
what it tells you i'm going to title
this eco system
the number of squares it's always going
to be 50 50.
i tend to go 60 60 just to open it up a
little bit more
but you can leave it at 50 50.
uh this uh standard square size each
square is 30. it's not going to matter
per se here
um but if you're doing this on just just
to use puzzle maker alone then yeah
you know you want to change the settings
to your liking
we're not going to use puzzle maker
we're only using it to build the
template for us that's all we're doing
all right so what i'm going to do is i'm
going to create a puzzle i'm going to
get my
words let me drag i'm going to copy all
my words
and then i'm going to paste them in here
so now i have all my words in there and
now i'm going to ask it to create a
puzzle
so there it is it's created a puzzle for
me it's
gotten all the words you can tell i
asked for seven out of seven words
so you'll see right there it says seven
out of seven words were placed
if it doesn't use all the words it'll
tell you
if you don't like the layout you can
always go back and ask it to do it again
and it'll come up with another layout if
you want
all right so let's use this layout and
so what i'm going to do is now i'm going
to go into my
google sheets so i'm going to put this
on the side for now and i'm going to go
to my google sheet so i have a blank
google sheet now you
you're going to have a blank google
sheet so we're going to title this
crossword puzzle
what's up
sorry let's reword that
all right so now the next thing you want
to do is you want to fix
your different um
your like cells you want to you want you
want these cells to be square right
so let's fix that so i'm going to grab a
bunch of these and i'm going to start
fixing them
by just dragging so that they're kind of
square
see how they're facing down now the the
biggest thing is well how many do i need
well let's go and check so at this point
is where you're going to go back to your
crisscross
or crossword puzzle and you're going to
count basically you just count squares 1

3 4 5 6 7 8 9
10 11 12 13. so i know i need 13
going across right going all the way
across so
what i'm gonna do what happened okay so
what i'm gonna do
is i'm gonna go to my crossword puzzle
and i'm gonna at least get 13. now i'm
going to tell you right now i normally
go at least two or three more
just in case so right now i got one two
three four
five six seven eight nine 10 11 12
13 14 15. so i'm going to get 15.
and what i'm going to do is i'm going to
highlight all of these
so that they're all the same size
so let's get into that size now you'll
see that they're really not
try um they're still kind of triangular
well you can get this one over here
and you can fix those two okay so let's
fix those
by kind of shaping them a little bit
and there you go now you kind of have
squares and that's what you want you
want some squares okay
so now let's see how many we need going
down well basically this is the longest
word right here so

so i only need ten going down so that's
pretty easy always leave a couple of
extra

right here all right so here's what you
do so now that you have your
layout you get your thirteen by twelve
and what you wanna do is you want to
shade that in so let me shade that in
with
um here's the screen that's kind of cool
so now i have the green right so
now all i got to do is follow the
pattern that i
i know i already have so the first thing
i'm going to do
is i'm going to merge this top sorry
merge this top line and the reason i
want to merge it see
i made one blank one it's because i'm
gonna give my my thing a title my
my pop my puzzle title so this is nico
system password puzzle
all right and so now i'm gonna just
make sure that it is in the center and
i'm gonna make sure that it's
centered perfectly and i may even
you know what what i think i'm going to
do is change this back to white
so that it's a little bit easier to see
and now what i'm going to do
is blow it up just a little bit so now

our puzzle so we
know our puzzle starts with

um and we know that it is the beginning
and we know that it is one two it's two
off
of the very top so i'm just going to

is you're gonna open up in your
crossword puzzle
you're gonna open up um a box
you're gonna open up a dialog box or a
comment box
and the way to do that is you click on
the box
and then you go to insert right here

and so now you're going to scroll down
and you're going to you can put a
comment or you can put a note
i prefer to put a note okay so i'm going
to put a note and now i'll send it says
you can type here
so that's what i'm going to do i'm going
to type that this is 5
across dash
and now i'm going to go to my clue what
was five across and
from the from the puzzle maker that
you've already
got all you got to do is copy
and paste so i'm going to copy it
and now i'm going to go to my puzzle and
paste it

clue in there so if you see the delta if
i hover over it
it's there now it's there so let's

hover over it they'll see oh yeah five

and five down and that's how you enter
both of those okay

then i'll pause so i can get the rest of

you copy it
with the mouse and then you go to the
crossword puzzle and
well sorry let's look at where's one oh
here it is the big one right here okay
so then you go to that right here and

insert a note
and i'm going to say this is one down
now i'm just going to control v
that does it that'll get you all your
clues
all right i'm going to pause for a
second just so i can enter the rest
all right so teachers i've managed to
get all of the different uh
words in or the clues in so if we look
at the clues now
if you hover here you'll see that
there's the clue for four
down here's the clue for six across
here's a clue for five across and then
five down
two down and then one down
and you know honestly you don't have to
put the down i just thought about it i
mean uh
all you really need is the the
um the clue unless you're at one of
these corners where it has
one going across one going down that's
where you would need
uh the across clue and then the down
clue
it just hit me right now duh but okay so
now well what do i do
about the word bank well the word bank i
just added on the side i mean
i didn't know where else to put it so i
just put it here you can put it wherever
you want honestly
um and you know like i said with my
pre-aps i'm not putting a word bank you
know i want them to be able to figure
this out so
um and then you know as you put the
words in

order is what i was going to say

you want you can get all of these words
you can like highlight them
and you can just data sort them so that
they're in alphabetical order
okay so now they're in alphabetical
order that's all
if you want to highlight them or um put
a
little screen around them or something
you can um
i always make sure i indicate that this
is my word bank so they know
um that's you know not one of the words
right
all right so that's basically how you
create a
crossword puzzle that you want to use i
mean basically you can use this now as a
um an assignment and so how do i do that
well
so now all i got to do is i save this
right in my google folder somewhere
and then i'm gonna go to my assignment
so i'll show you what that looks like
so here's my assignments um and so
thursday they're gonna i have two
versions i have the
version for my collab where i give them
a little bit of help and
uh for my regular where i don't give
them any help right
so if you want to see that basically um
i put that in and what you'll see is
i've put in the first letter
so some of my students are kind of low
so they're still learning their words
so i put the first letter in to kind of
help them with
a lot of the words because you gotta
understand these are some difficult
words
that they're still trying to understand
um like you here you'll notice i didn't
put the first letter because i want them
to realize once they get that word
they'll have that letter right so uh one
other thing you might want to do is if
you have
empty spaces you'll see how i put black
in there to indicate that that's not a
word there's no words in there
it might confuse them so i always try to
do that when i'm building these all
right
so that's um how you do this honestly
you just go
into your courses and when you go into
your courses
um you're going to build uh
the the assignment so here's my thursday
assignment
and when you build it you're going to
um basically just go to google drive and
ask it to
create one it's going to create a
copy for each student and then the
student will submit it
and when it gets submitted you will look
it up
under submissions and you'll be able to
see
that they've turned something in um and
you'll be able to see that even in your
gradebook
uh when you go to your gradebook you'll
be able to see that too that something's
been
turned in so that's basically it um
that's how we create google slides from
i mean a crossword puzzle from for
google slides
