Maxwell Bridge

AIM:-To calculate the unknown inductance and capacitance using the

Maxwell bridge.

MATERIAL’S REQUIRED:- Omega ETB - 135 Trainer board

Power Supply
Connecting wires
Headphone
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:-

1
THEORY:-
 Maxwell Bridge Theory, shown in Figure, measures an
unknown
inductance in terms of a known capacitor.

 The use of standard arm offers the advantage of

compactness and easy shielding.
 The capacitor is almost a loss-less component. One arm
has a resistance R1 in parallel with C1, and hence it is
easier to write the balance equation using the
admittance of arm 1 instead of the impedance.
 The general equation for bridge balance is ,
Z1 Zx = Z2 Z3
Zx = Z2 Z3/Z1 = Z2 Z3 Y1--------------------------(1)

Where Z1 = R1 in parallel with C1 i.e,

Y1 = 1/Z1
Y1 = 1/R1 + jωC1
Z2 = R 2
Z2 = R 3
Zx = Rx in series with Lx = Rx + jωLx

From eq-(1) We have ,

Rx + jωLx = R2 R3(1/R1 = jωC1)
Rx + jωLx = R2 R3/R1 + jωC1R2R3
Rx = R2R3/R2 and Lx = C1R2R3

PROCEDURE:-

2
1.Using patch cords connect 1 KHz sine wave output to bridge
points marked as A,C.
2. Switch on the unit.
3. Keep LEVEL control of in-built 1KHz. Oscillator to maximum
position .An audio Tone should be heard from speaker.
4 Select any value of unknown capacitor i.e.C1, C2 etc.
5 Select R1 =470 Ohms
6 Keep the band switch marked Inductor L to L2=100mH
7. Adjust R3,R2 and R4 in sequence repeatedly till the volume of the
tone heard is Minimum possible or it is not heard at all.
8. Record the readings.
OBSERVATION TABLE:-
Sr. R2 R4 C1 LX LX Type
No. (Ohm) (Ohm) (uF) (Theor (Practica of
y) l) Board
1. 0.976 100 0.1 15 9.76 Omega
2. 0.298 500 0.1 15 14.9 Omega
3. 0.34 1000 0.1 15 34 Omega
4. 0.976 100 0.15 100 14.64 Omega
5. 0.299 500 0.15 100 22.42 Omega
6. 0.314 1000 0.15 100 47.10 Omega

CALCULATION:-

For L1:
LX=C1R2R4= 0.1 X 10-6 X 0.976 X 103 X 100 = 9.76 mH
LX=0.1 X 10-6 X 0.298 X 500 =14.9 mH
LX= 0.1 X 10-6 X 0.34 X 1000 = 34 mH
For L2:
LX = 0.15 X 10-6 X 0.976 X 103 X 100 = 14.64 mH
LX = 0.15 X 10-6 X 0.299 X 103 X 500 = 22.42 mH
LX = 0.15 X 10-6 X 0.314 X 103 X 1000 = 47.1 mH

CONCLUSION :-
In this experiment, We learnt about finding unknown capacitance
and Inductance using the Maxwell Bridge Circuit.
