LAST WEEK’S Irish World went to press just hours before news

The Irish World newspaper

broke of the untimely passing of trad musician Seamus Begley,
aged just 73.
Which meant that instead of a tribute to the great man, my
column was about the boom in sales of toy accordions thanks
to the Disney film Encanto. This week I get to make up for it.
But uncannily, toy accordions remind me meeting Seamus for
the first time. He was getting ready to perform at the London
Irish Centre for the Return to Camden Town festival, and was
messing around with a toy accordion someone had given him.

is proud to support
He suddenly handed it to me, saying ‘here, see if you can get
anything out of it.’
I played a few bars of Sally Gardens, but he was more
pleased with the fact that I accepted his playful offer, rather
than anything I played.
Any time I saw him perform; at the Return to Camden festival
as well as TradFest in Dublin, The Gathering in Killarney, and the
surprise appearances at the concerts of his friends – of whom
he had many – Seamus was a pure joy to be around. But the
cheeky schoolboy demeanour was a modest front for a man

who was a masterful accordion player and singer.
He was encouraging to all young musicians not through lofty
advice, but by treating you as his equal.
His shows were part stand up comedy, part family get-
together - in short, it is how trad music is meant to be enjoyed.
It’s difficult to believe now that there won’t be any more
memorable concerts in his company. His death is a loss, but his
life was a gift, and we will be grateful for his
music for many generations to come.
Sincerest condolences to his family and
