PART I.
READING COMPREHENSION
Task 1: Read the text and answer the questions that follow.
To: [email protected]
Subject: My letter
Hi, Ralph! How are you there? I have learned from your mom that
you have been sick for three days already. I hope that you get well
soon, and be back to school.
Today is such an amazing day, because we learned an interesting
topic in our biology class that made me really fascinated in our
lesson. We learned interesting facts about hummingbirds. Have you
seen one on TV or in a magazine? Have you ever heard the sound of a
hummingbird? Humming birds make a buzzing noise when they fly.
They actually make this noise because they beat their wings so fast.
__________, they make a lot of noise; that’s why, they are called
humming birds.
I was really engrossed while listening to our teacher as she also
shared how unique hummingbirds are. I learned that they are the
only bird that flies backward. They also move their wings so fast
that they can hover. Sometimes they fly or hover upside down.
Moreover, hummingbirds are also small. One type called the bee
hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. Bee hummingbirds
weigh less than a penny. They are just a little bit bigger than bees.
Our teacher also shared that hummingbirds help flowers too. They
get pollen on their heads and bills when they feed. Flowers use pollen
to make seeds. Hummingbirds help pollen get from one flower to the
next. This helps flowers make more seeds. More seeds mean more
flowers. More flowers mean more food for hummingbirds. Isn't it
nice how that works out?
Our teacher gave us homework. She wanted us to research about
elephants. I am doing my homework over the weekend. If you need
some help with your homework, I am just here to help you. I can visit
you at home if you want. How about doing our homework together
over the weekend? I am positive that you are already well by that
time.
Your friend,
Vic
