Dear Friends of Northern Plains Dance,
Thank you for joining us for Dance+, the first
performance of NPD’s 2024-25 Theater Season. As
always, Dance+ 2024 features diverse and thought-
provoking works. As the Director of this incredible
organization, I always looked forward to this program.
While I adore the storytelling of narrative ballets such as
this season’s The Nutcracker and our spring program,
Cinderella, the excitement of experiencing these
contemporary works is difficult to match. What makes
them so special is that they are also extremely personal.
While the program notes may offer a window into the
choreographers’ intentions, each audience member can
interpret the works from their own unique perspective.
How I feel during a work may be completely different than your emotional experience
and that of the dancers as they also bring their own unique perspectives and
personalities to the works.
Whether you consider yourself well-versed or this is your first time experiencing
contemporary dance, be prepared to be amazed. Our Artistic Team has curated six
boldly unique pieces to enjoy that will linger with you long after the curtain closes.
The marriage of dance and visual arts is truly unique, not only locally but nationally -
that is not to be overlooked or taken lightly.
Our local arts community is such a vibrant asset we should all be proud of and your
support of programs such as these are key to that success. We are so grateful for
your support of works that challenge our way of thinking and attract world-class
choreographers and artists to the region.
I hope you enjoy Dance+.
Sincerely,
director
Hollis Mackintosh Heid (director, choreographer - The Butterfly effect)
began her training with Delia Foley, A.R.A.D. at Ballet Arts in Clarks Mills, NY. She
attended Butler University, graduating in 2002 with a BFA in Dance Performance
and Arts Administration. She danced professionally with The Chamber Dance
Project, Louisville Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Augusta Ballet and Northern Plains
Ballet, dancing roles in works by Fredrick Franklin, Lars Lubovitch, Peter Powlus,
Merce Cunningham, Andre Prokovsky, Val Caniparoli, Ron Cunningham, and
George Balanchine. As Director of Northern Plains Dance, she has choreographed
9 original pieces for Choreographers’ Showcase and Dance+, restaged Act II of
Paquita, Swan Lake, and Giselle, and directed 16 performances of The Nutcracker
and 13 original full-length fairy tale productions. Her focus as Director has been
expanding the organization’s reach into the community through the development
of various outreach programs, partnering with local arts and service organizations,
and through her artistic contributions, bringing NPD to the forefront of the state for
innovative arts programming.

Choreographer’s notes
While living among seven billion people in the world, how can
I find absolute freedom in my body while acknowledging the
space I share with others? Knowing that we only have one take
at life, what would I do to feel free? What would I let go of
to feel light? What would I hold on to, to feel content? Can I
deconstruct the norm in a way that feels truthful and honest to
me, my body, and the space around me?

Choreographer’s notes
One color does not exist without the presence of
another… It is in this contrast and balance that we find
the beauty of both art and life. “In Gradient” was created
to explore the idea of the color spectrum and how it
may serve as an analogy for life. Through the vehicle
of classical dance, I hope you can identify the use of
contrasting dynamics, speed, and articulation of the body
to personify the essence of transition between colors to
create something whole.

Choreographer’s notes
The weight of the veil tells a story about loss. Each section is inspired
by the emotions experienced through the 5 stages of grief. Everyone’s
story is different, with no linear path of how to cope. The only way
forward is through acknowledging the tangled mess of feeling. Time
eases the pain, and the absence of what once existed stings a little
less. The love that once had a home must go somewhere. For now,
it goes inward, trust leading the way to healing.

Choreographer’s notes
“The threads of our past never unravel; they hover like
invisible webs, occasionally glistening in the sunlight.”
— Author, Anne Roiphe
When a butterfly flaps its wings, does it unknowingly set off
a chain of events that causes a tornado in another part of
the world? Does the impact of our seemingly insignificant
actions unravel the tapestry of cause and effect that defines
our interconnected existence? The thought of such an impact
encourages us to acknowledge chaos and to be thoughtful
with our decisions because we never know what the
consequence of those might be.

Choreographer’s notes
“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it
becomes a memory.” - Dr. Seuss
The inspiration for this piece came after going through
family photos of a loved one who recently passed away. A
photograph of a moment in time captured to be revisited and
to be enjoyed. This piece is about the moments we choose to
display in a frame. The times that we feel most inspired, loved,
and protected and the times that we most want to remember.
For it is within these frames that our past gets to live on.

Artists
Rhonda K. Weninger graduated with a Bachelor of
Science in Education with a major in Art from Minot State
University. Rhonda is self-employed as an artist who has
guided hundreds of painters by building step-by-step
paintings at social art events. In the last few years, her
artwork has been featured in numerous exhibitions across
the state and her painting Broken Boundaries was awarded
a Merit Award at the 2021 Juried Student Show at the
Northwest Arts Center. Rhonda held her first solo show, Point of No
Return, in 2023 at the Taube Museum of Art. She currently teaches art
for the Lewis & Clark School District, and she is an MSU College for Kids
instructor during the summer months. In her free time, she enjoys playing
sand volleyball, golfing, flipping furniture, attending her daughters’ school
activities, and events that expand her cultural appreciation. Rhonda, her
two daughters, and their cat Spike reside in Velva, North Dakota.
Alicia Leingang was born and raised in central North
Dakota, where she spent the first half of her life before
moving to Bismarck. In her time living here, Alicia has
explored multiple opportunities from restaurant service,
to surgical tech, and daycare provider before taking on
her most recent adventure as co-owner of Carden Custom
Framing. Through working with other local artists Alicia
found her passion for the arts. Watercolors are Alicia’s
preferred medium. She loves exploring the many ways color dances and
moves on the paper. Alicia has recently been working more with mixed
media and having fun learning about that process. When not playing
painter, Alicia is a custom picture framer. She also loves spending time
with her family, gardening, camping, fishing and almost anything that is
outdoors.
Miranda Cox is a single mom of 2 who has been
painting for 20 years. While she mostly paint in oils,
Miranda loves art of all kinds. Miranda works full time with
children with Autism and is a full time student. Art is her
passion and love.
James Lawson has been capturing landscapes for
20 years as a hobby. He has been married for 26 years
and started portrait photographing three years ago after
having only captured captured his children previously.
Photography has become more than just a hobby for
James. His focus started with sports and quickly evolved
to include senior pictures, families, and events. However,
dance photography is one of his favorite things. James loves capturing art
and movement.
Artists
Hollie DeFrancisco hails from the eastern shores
of Massachusetts where her creative journey began. As a
young girl, her father showed her the wonders of drawing,
pulling out carbon sheets and fantasy reference images,
and that is where her passion bloomed. Van Gogh said
drawing is the first step in painting and for her it was
the first step in becoming an illustrator. In 2010, Hollie
graduated from Jacksonville University with a Bachelors in
Fine Arts where her professor honed her chaotic passion
into polished craft. She specializes in a delightful blend of whimsy and
approachable nightmares, inspired by her young love of fairytales and
horror movies. Hollie has been represented by and exhibited her work
in group shows both regionally and nationally in galleries including
Alexander Breast Gallery, Underbrush Art Gallery, 8th Street Art Gallery,
Spirit Room, and The Rourke. Her illustrations have won several awards,
and she is always seeking ways to work collaboratively with her fellow
artists.
Nicole Gagner is an artist living and working in
Bismarck, North Dakota. She studied in Georgia and
California and has traveled extensively painting and
drawing around the world, including Utah, New Zealand
and at a Voices of the Wilderness Artist Residency in
Selawik, AK- but she is delighted to be living and working
on the northern prairies again. She works as a teaching
artist with a wide variety of students of all ages and abilities. Her work
began with VSA ND and Options Community Services, bringing art to
students living with disabilities, and that has informed her practice as a
teaching artist and the belief that art is for everyone. Since the beginning
of the Covid 19 pandemic, Nicole has worked to make residencies
and workshops available online in a variety of ways. She started the
Bismarck Mandan Studio Virtual Crawl to connect artists to an audience
while everyone stayed safe at home, and has started Meadowlark
Mercantile Art vending machines as a new way for artists to sell their
creations. She was selected as a Change Network Cohort for 2021,
and participated in the Springboard for the Arts Creative Community
Leadership Institute. Nicole’s passion for community development
organization and rural arts activism has led her to become a board
member of BisMarket, the regional farmers market, and has manifested
in collaborative artist residencies and facilitating the organization of a
collaborative touring art show with the BisMan Writers Guild called The
Art of Writing. More information about Nicole’s artwork can be found at
PainterNicole.com, or follow @PainterNicole on Instagram and Facebook.
