Yellow Journalism

Presentation of the news in a manner to create an overrated hype


for the sake of business and making money can be understood as
the yellow journalism in layman terms. Going by the definition of
the term, it can be seen as presenting the illegitimate and the
poorly researched articles with catchy headlines being served
with the exaggeration. The idea is to make millions out of
overstating the events, scandal-mongering and sensationalism.
Yellow journalism is nowhere near to the basic objective of the
media house. Rather, it can be compared to the art of the
business where one is primarily aiming at earning bucks and to
fulfil the selfish means of the indulged parties.

Yellow journalism was a style of newspaper reporting that


emphasized sensationalism over facts. During its heyday in the late
19th century it was one of many factors that helped push the United
States and Spain into war in Cuba and the Philippines, leading to
the acquisition of overseas territory by the United States.

E.g : the coverage of Arushi Talwar's murder, Love Jihad, and most recently the
case of Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami.

yellow journalism.

Now before that we are going to understand what journalism is and what is its importance.

So the activity or profession of writing for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or preparing
news to be broadcast.

Journalism plays a crucial role in informing the public, holding those


in power accountable, and fostering a functioning democracy. It
helps to uncover the truth, provide a platform for diverse voices,
and create a more informed and engaged society.

being sensational and biased. The news channels were accused of conducting a trial by
media and portraying the actor in a negative light.
• The coverage of the Nirbhaya case in 2012 was also criticized for being sensational
and insensitive. Some media outlets used graphic images and sensational headlines,
which were deemed inappropriate by many.
• In 2019, some media outlets reported on a supposed "attack" on a temple in Uttar
Pradesh, which turned out to be false. The reports were criticized for being
sensational and spreading communal tension.
• During the COVID-19 pandemic, some media outlets were accused of spreading fear
and panic by reporting unverified information and exaggerating the situation.
