UNIVERSITY HS&E SOP


AIM OF UNIVERSITY HSE POLICY

• To achieve a zero-incident environment where


staff, students, residents, and visitors of the
university can perform their functions and daily life
activities within a safe and healthy environment.
• To minimize the risks to health and safety of
people related to and at surrounding of the
university
OBJECTIVE OF HSE POLICY
1) Ensure the safety of construction sites within the premises of the
university by following the safety precautions and use of avoidance
measures.

2) Put measures in place for safe evacuation and swift reporting of


fire incidents.

3) Enable a healthy and safe environment for sports by observing a


set of precautions.

4) Making sure that the traffic rules are observed for avoidance of
accidents.

5) Provide guidance for first responders.


UNIV HSE POLICY
1) Safety from Fire hazards.

2) Safety at Sports Areas.

3) Roads Safety.

4) Medical Respondents.

5) C3A Procedure for Health & Safety Policy.

6) Safety at Construction Sites.


SAFETY FROM FIRE HAZARDS
(1) Enough fire extinguishers should be installed in buildings.
(2) Periodic inspection of fire extinguishers should be carried out regularly.
(3) Fire Marshalls should be nominated for each floor of the building.
(4) Regular fire drills should be conducted on the campus.
(5) Assembly areas should be properly marked outside the buildings.
(6) Installation of fire alarms and suppression system should be ensured in the
buildings.
(7) Fire points should be properly maintained.
(8) Staff and students should be trained to deal with fires.
(9) Emergency numbers must be displayed at visible places in a clear manner
to ensure communication in case of fire.
(10) Exit signs should be placed in buildings at visible places.
(11) Evacuation plans should be displayed on notice boards and in offices.
(12) Multiple passages should be provided to evacuate buildings in case of fire.
DON’Ts - TO ENSURE FIRE SAFETY
a. Don’t throw burning match sticks / cigarette buds in open, always
extinguish cigarette buds / match sticks properly before disposal.
b. Don’t throw burning coal / wood, burning material or animal dung etc
in the open. Always ensure it is properly extinguished before disposal.
c. Don’t throw any glass, broken glass piece eyeglasses act as litter in
the open area.
d. Don’t smoke in bed / rooms etc; Smoking be strictly restricted to
designated Smoking Corners where extinguishing Cigarettes be
ensured before disposal.
e. Don't put ashtrays on chair or sofa arms.
f. Don't leave unattended cigarettes burning in ashtrays.
g. Don’t burn paper, plastics, grass / wood, or combustibles /
inflammable material in open or during strong wind.
h. Don't run electrical cords under rugs, over nails or in high traffic areas.
DON’Ts - TO ENSURE FIRE SAFETY
i. Don't overload electrical outlets with appliances.
j. Don't forget to unplug heaters after you turn them off.
k. Don't leave food unattended on the stove. If you must leave the kitchen
take a wooden spoon or a pot holder as a reminder.
l. Don't cook wearing sleeves that can dangle near the burners.
m.Don't let grease build up on your stove or oven.
n. Don’t use sub-standard gas cylinder and ensure extra caution during
transportation, shifting as well as placing away from passages / human
presence areas.
o. Don’t leave gas heaters “ON” once sleeping. Scheduled / un-schedules
disruption of gas may prove lethal.
p. Don’t leave geysers “ON” overnight. Gas accumulated near burner is
dangerous once switching ON the burner.
FIRE SAFETY TIPS
• There are different fire safety tips each for minors, adults and workplaces.
• Work places safety tips are given below:

(1) Ensure that employees are aware of Fire Safety Plan and necessary
evacuation procedures. Test drills are a useful way to practice fire
evacuation and will enable employees to be aware of evacuation signals.
(2) Employees may not always be able to use the designated fire route which
means there must be an alternative way out.
(3) If encounter smoke when leaving the building, it is important to remember
Fall and Crawl technique. Crawling under the smoke is the most effective
technique for leaving a building.
(4) If stuck in a room and cannot leave because of a fire outside, put
something by the doorway to prevent smoke from entering the room.
(5) Many fires start without any human knowledge and will worsen if left
unchecked. The best way to tackle an undiscovered fire is the use of a
passive fire protection system.
SAFETY AT SPORTS AREAS
(1) Use of sport facilities such as horse-riding, swimming pool and
gym should only be allowed in the presence of trained
instructors.

(2) Wearing safety gear should be mandatory before riding,


swimming, and exercising.

(3) Safety instructions should be displayed in the gym, riding club


and swimming pool.

(4) Only kids of appropriate age should be allowed in sports facilities


GYM SAFETY SOP
To protect staff and gym members from the risks created by the provision and use
of gymnasium equipment following to be ensured by Supervisor: -
a. The position and layout of equipment.
b. Access to equipment.
c. Secure racks for weights and accessories.
d. Ventilation and air conditioning systems.
e. Providing access to a drinking water supply.
f. Assessment of user fitness levels by gym trainer.
g. Inspection and maintenance of equipment.
h. Making a risk assessment of gymnasium equipment.
i. Ensuring that the policies, procedures, Safe Systems of Work and control
measures relating to safe equipment are managed by gym staff.
j. Gym Trainer to monitor and review procedure from time to time and whenever
an incident occurs, suggest changes to the procedure identified as necessary
or beneficial.
OUTDOOR GROUND SAFETY SOP
To protect children, students and staff from playgrounds accidents, following
measures to be taken:
a. Assess the playground and equipment to identify where students and others
could be harmed.
b. Equipment is maintained regularly.
c. Surfaces must be impacting absorbing to prevent injury from falls from climbing
equipment.
d. Staff to ensure that there are no broken/sharp pieces on surfaces.

e. Pit holes are filled with sand on regular basis.


f. Daily/weekly inspections by supervisor. Frequent operational checks covering
the stability and wear of equipment.
g. Supervisor to monitor and review procedure from time to time and whenever
an incident occurs, suggest changes to the procedure identified as necessary
or beneficial.
SAFETY ON UNIV ROADS
(1) Ensure a speed limit of 40 km/h is complied with by all vehicles
in the campus, even after closing hours.

(2) Wrong parking should be checked and fined.

(3) Motorcycles provided to supervising staff with communication


sets to ensure road safety and other security aspects round the
clock.

(4) Any violation of the given SOP or instructions should be


immediately reported
MEDICAL RESPONDERS
(1) Place helpline / rescue number on visible places throughout the
campus.

(2) Paramedical staff should be trained in essential first aid services


such as CPR, wound handling, dog / snake bite, etc.

(3) Regular training of CPR should be arranged for university staff.

(4) First responders among the paramedical staff should be


identified.

(5) Snake bite and rabies vaccines should be readily available in the
campus.

(6) Stray dogs may be captured and sent to dog shelters


SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
• Purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish
an efficient and sustainable waste management system
• Dust Bins of three different colours to be used for the disposal of
litter,
• Green for recyclable material for which list is bar coded on the bin.
• Blue for general waste.
• Yellow for hazardous waste (Only to be placed near identified
locations).
C3A PROCEDURE FOR HEALTH &
SAFETY POLICY
C3A Awareness Drives
➢ Centre for Counselling & Career Advisory (C3A)
provides mental health and career counselling
services to the whole NUST echo system including
students, faculty, officers, and staff.
➢ Every year, C3A conducts orientation lecture for
the freshmen and newly inducted faculty, officers,
and staff to acquaint them regarding different
services being offered at the Centre and how they
can be availed.
