CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION TO S.I.W.E.S
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (S.I.W.E.S.) was established in 1973 by
the Nigerian government to give students hands-on work experience while they're still in
school. The goal of the program is to help students apply their academic knowledge in a
practical setting. Over the years, the program has been revised and updated to stay relevant to
the changing needs of students and the workplace. Today, the program remains an important
part of the educational system in Nigeria.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF S.I.W.E.S
The program was first introduced by the Nigerian government in 1973, under the
administration of General Yakubu Gowon. It was created in response to a growing concern
about the high rate of unemployment among young people, particularly graduates. The
program was originally called the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), and it was managed by the
Ministry of Employment and Labor. In 1975, the program was renamed the Student Industrial
Work Experience Scheme (S.I.W.E.S.). It was later transferred to the Ministry of Education,
where it remains.
Under S.I.W.E.S., students are placed with employers for a period of time, usually during the
summer or winter break from school. The length of the placement varies, but it is typically
between 8 and 12 weeks. During the placement, students gain practical experience in the
workplace, working on tasks related to their field of study. They are also given the
opportunity to network with professionals in their field, which can help them build
connections and find job opportunities after graduation. Many students find the S.I.W.E.S.
experience to be invaluable.
Today the program continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of students and employers.
1.2 OBJECTIVES OF S.I.W.E.S
The objectives of Student's Industrial Work Experience Scheme are as follows:
To prepare students for the job market:S.I.W.E.S. helps students to gain practical experience
in their chosen field, which can be invaluable when applying for jobs after graduation. The
program also gives students the opportunity to network with professionals in their field and
learn about the skills and qualifications that are in demand in the job market. Many students
also gain confidence and a sense of independence through their participation in S.I.W.E.S.
To expose students to the work enironment:S.I.W.E.S. is designed to give students a taste of
what it's like to work in their chosen field. The program provides students with the
opportunity to work in a real-world setting and gain first-hand experience of the work
environment. This can help students to decide if they want to pursue a career in their chosen
field, and to identify any areas where they need to improve.
To develop professional skills in students:S.I.W.E.S. is designed to help students develop the
skills and competencies that are needed in the workplace. The program helps students to
develop their communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. It also gives them the
opportunity to develop technical skills related to their field of study. The program also
encourages students to develop a professional attitude and to learn how to take responsibility
for their own learning and development.
To foster a positive relationship between students and employers:S.I.W.E.S. aims to create a
mutually beneficial relationship between students and employers. The program provides
students with the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and to gain insight into
the world of work. For employers, the program provides an opportunity to identify and
develop future talent. The program also encourages employers to provide meaningful work
experience for students, which can lead to future employment opportunities.
To help students identify their career interests and goals:S.I.W.E.S. helps students to explore
their career options and to discover what they're passionate about. The program also helps
students to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to develop a career plan. Many
students find that their experience in S.I.W.E.S. helps them to make better-informed decisions
about their future career.
1.3 IMPLEMENTATION OF S.I.W.E.S
The program is implemented by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), which
isa government agency that works to promote employment and reduce unemployment in
Nigeria. The NDE works with schools, employers, and other stakeholders to administer the
S.I.W.E.S. program. The NDE works with universities and polytechnics to identify and select
students for the program. These institutions then select students based on a variety of factors,
such as academic performance and career goals. The selected students are then matched with
employers who are looking for interns. The NDE also provides training and support to both
students and employers throughout the program.
1.4 BENEFITS OF S.I.W.E.S
There are many benefits for both students and employers. For students, the program
provides an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, develop new skills, and explore
career options. For employers, the program provides access to a pool of skilled and motivated
interns, as well as the chance to invest in the development of future talent. The program also
helps to build a positive relationship between the education system and the world of work.
Another benefit of the S.I.W.E.S. program is that it helps to reduce the mismatch between the
skills of graduates and the needs of employers. The program gives students the opportunity to
develop the skills that are in demand in the labor market, which can increase their
employability. Additionally, the program can help to reduce the rate of graduate
unemployment.
1.5 CHALLENGES OF S.I.W.E.S
One challenge is the lack of funding, which can make it difficult to provide adequate
training and support for students and employers. Another challenge is the lack of
infrastructure, such as internet access and reliable transportation, which can make it difficult
for students to participate in the program. Finally, there is also a lack of awareness about the
program among potential participants, which can limit its reach.
Another challenge of the S.I.W.E.S. program is the issue of placement quality. Not all
students are able to find a meaningful and beneficial placement. Some end up in placements
that do not match their career goals, while others are placed in organizations that do not have
the capacity to provide them with the necessary training and support. Additionally, some
students may not have access to the resources they need to make the most of their placement.

2.5 SOAP PRODUCTION PROCESS
The soap production process involves sourcing raw materials, creating the soap base,
adding ingredients to create different types of soap, and then packaging and distributing the
soap to customers. This process is highly regulated and must follow strict safety and quality
control standards. It's a complex process, but the end result is a high-quality product that
consumers can trust.
It start with the sourcing of raw materials. This is a crucial step in the process, as the
quality of the raw materials will determine the quality of the finished product. The
ingredients must be carefully selected to ensure that they are natural, safe, and effective. For
example, oils like olive oil and coconut oil are popular choices for soap making, as they have
natural cleansing properties. Fats like tallow are also commonly used, as they produce a rich,
creamy lather.
After the ingredients have been sourced, they go through a process called saponification to
create the soap base. This process involves combining the oils or fats with an alkali like lye to
produce soap molecules. This process can take several hours or even days, depending on the
ingredients and the desired properties of the finished product. After saponification, the soap
base is ready to be scented, colored, and molded into the final product.
The next step is to add ingredients like essential oils, fragrances, and colors to the soap base.
This is what gives the soap its unique scent, texture, and appearance. For example, lavender
essential oil can be added to give the soap a relaxing, floral scent. Or, colorants like mica
powder can be added to create a shimmering, metallic effect. Once the soap has been scented
and colored, it's ready to be molded into bars. The soap base is poured into molds, which can
be any shape or size. Once the soap has hardened in the molds, it's cut into individual bars.
This is when the soap really starts to take on its final shape and look. The bars are then
packaged in boxes or wrappers to keep them fresh and ready for use. This is the basic process
of soap production, but there are many variations and specialized techniques that can be used
to create unique products.
Finally the soap is then tested for its pH level, its moisturizing properties, its cleansing
ability, and its overall performance. If the soap passes all the tests, it's ready to be sold to
customers. Otherwise, it may need to be reformulated or adjusted to meet the required
standards.
CHAPTER 3
3.0:LITERATURE REVIEW
3.1 MACHINERY AND INGREDIENT
Alcanah Limited has a state-of-the-art soap manufacturing plant. The plant uses modern
machinery and equipment to produce high-quality soap. The plant is fully automated, which
allows for efficient and consistent production. As for ingredients, Alcanah Limited sources its
raw materials from reputable suppliers who meet high standards of quality and safety. The
company uses only natural and ethically sourced ingredients in its products.
Manufacturing plant
The plant has a capacity of 1,000 tons per day, and it operates 24 hours a day, seven days a
week. The plant has a number of different production lines, each designed to produce a
specific type of soap. The plant uses a continuous process, which means that the raw
materials are continuously fed into the system and transformed into soap. The soap is then cut
into bars and packaged for distribution. The plant uses a number of different machines to
produce soap. One of the most important machines is the saponification reactor. This is where
the soap base is created through the process of saponification. The reactor uses high
temperatures and pressure to mix the raw materials and create the soap base. The soap base is
then fed into the next machine, which is called the molding machine. This machine shapes the
soap into bars of the desired size and shape. After the soap has been molded, it goes to the
drying and cooling section of the plant. Here, the soap is cooled and dried to remove any
excess moisture. After this, the soap is then fed into the wrapping and packaging machines.
The wrapping machine wraps the soap in paper or plastic, depending on the product. The
packaging machine then puts the soap into its final packaging, such as a box or carton. And
that's how soap is made at Alcanah Limited.
Mixers
Theyare used to thoroughly combine the raw materials in the soap-making process. There
are two main types of mixers: batch mixers and continuous mixers. Batch mixers combine all
the ingredients in a single batch, while continuous mixers combine the ingredients
continuously, as they are fed into the machine.
Centrifuges
They are used to separate the soap from the excess water and glycerin. They work by
spinning the soap mixture at high speeds, causing the heavier particles to settle at the bottom
of the centrifuge.
Molding machines
These are used to form the soap into its final shape. There are two main types of molding
machines: injection molding machines and extrusion molding machines. Injection molding
machines use a mold to create the soap's shape, while extrusion molding machines use a
screw to push the soap through a die. Both types of machines have their own advantages and
disadvantages.Injection molding machines are fast and efficient, but they can only produce
soap in specific shapes. Extrusion molding machines are slower and more expensive, but they
can create soap in a wide variety of shapes.
INGREDIENTS
One of the great things about Alcanah Limited's soaps is that they are all made with natural
ingredients. This means that the soaps are free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances.
The essential oils used in the soaps provide natural fragrance, and they also have a variety of
health benefits. For example, lavender oil is known for its calming and relaxing properties,
while lemon oil is known for its uplifting and refreshing properties. One of the main
ingredients is palm oil, which is sourced from sustainable plantations in Nigeria. The palm oil
is then processed and refined to create a high-quality soap base. Other ingredients include
coconut oil, castor oil, glycerin, and essential oils. These ingredients are combined in
different proportions to create a variety of different soaps, each with its own unique
properties.
Palm-oil
As I mentioned, palm oil is a key ingredient in Alcanah Limited's soaps. It's a natural oil that
is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It's also a sustainable ingredient, as it can be harvested
without harming the environment. In fact, Alcanah Limited only uses palm oil that is sourced
from plantations that have been certified as sustainable by the Roundtable on Sustainable
Palm Oil (RSPO). This means that the plantations are managed in a way that protects the
environment and supports local communities.
Castor oil
Another ingredient worth mentioning is castor oil. This oil is extracted from castor beans, and
it has a number of benefits. It's known for its moisturizing and nourishing properties, and it's
also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. In Alcanah Limited's
soaps, castor oil helps to create a rich, creamy lather. It's also a sustainable ingredient, as the
castor beans are a renewable resource that can be grown without harming the environment.
Coconut oil
Like palm oil, coconut oil is a natural ingredient that's rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It's
also a natural moisturizer, and it helps to give the soaps a pleasant, tropical scent. Coconut oil
is also a sustainable ingredient, as it's produced from coconuts that are grown on sustainable
plantations. Coconut oil has a number of other benefits, including its anti-fungal and
antibacterial properties. It's also thought to have anti-aging properties, making it a great
ingredient for skin care products.
Glycerin
Glycerin is a byproduct of the soap-making process, and it has a number of benefits for the
skin. It's a humectant, which means it helps to retain moisture in the skin. It's also known for
its ability to soothe and soften the skin. And since it's a byproduct of soap-making, it's a
sustainable ingredient that's produced without any additional impact on the environment.
Essential oils
Alcanah Limited's soaps are scented with a variety of essential oils, including lavender,
lemon, and tea tree oil. These oils are extracted from plants, and they have a number of health
benefits. Lavender oil is known for its calming and relaxing properties, while lemon oil is
thought to be uplifting and energizing. Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial and anti-
fungal properties. These oils not only make the soaps smell great, but they also have a
number of benefits for the skin.
3.2 QUALITY CONTROL
Quality control at Alcanah Limited starts from the very beginning of the soap-making
process. The company sources only the highest quality raw materials, which are then tested
for purity and quality before being used in the soap. Once the soap has been made, it is tested
at multiple stages to ensure that it meets the company's high standards. This includes testing
the soap during the production process, as well as after it has been packaged and is ready for
sale. The company also has a strict policy for handling customer complaints and ensuring that
any issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.
Test for colour
Every batch of soap is visually inspected to ensure that it has the right color and consistency.
If the soap is too light or too dark, it may not meet the company's quality standards. The color
of the soap can be affected by a number of factors, including the type of oils used, the
temperature during the soap-making process, and the length of time that the soap is left to
cure. The company has a set of color standards that it uses to evaluate each batch of soap.
Testing the scent
Testing the scent of the soap is another important part of the quality control process. Alcanah
Limited uses both manual and automated methods to test the scent of its soaps. The manual
method involves having a trained tester smell the soap and evaluate its scent based on a set of
criteria. The automated method involves using a machine that detects and measures the levels
of various compounds in the soap, including those that contribute to its scent. The company
uses these methods to ensure that each batch of soap smells as it should and is consistent with
previous batches.
Testing for texture
Texture is an important factor in determining the quality of a soap, as it can affect how well it
lathers and how it feels on the skin. To test the texture of the soap, the company uses a
machine called a penetrometer. This machine measures the force required to penetrate the
surface of the soap, which gives a measure of its hardness. The company has a set range of
hardness values that it uses to ensure that each batch of soap is of the right consistency.
Testing for pH levels
pH is an important factor in the quality of soap. To test for pH, the company uses a device
called a pH meter. This device measures the acidity or alkalinity of the soap by measuring the
electrical conductivity of the soap solution. The pH levels of the soap are then compared to
the company's standards to ensure that the soap is within the acceptable range. This is
important because soap that is too acidic or alkaline can be irritating to the skin.
Testing for color consistency
To do this, the company uses a machine called a spectrophotometer. This machine measures
the intensity of light that is reflected from the soap. The machine compares the intensity of
light from the soap to a standard, and then determines how close the color of the soap is to the
standard. This helps the company to make sure that each batch of soap is the same color and
that the color is consistent from batch to batch.
3.3 PACKAGING AND DISTRIBUTION
After the soap has been made and tested, it's time for it to be packaged and distributed.
Alcanah Limited uses a variety of packaging methods, depending on the type of soap and the
needs of the customer. For some products, the soap is wrapped in paper or plastic. For others,
the soap is packaged in a box or other container. The packaging is designed to be attractive
and eye-catching, while also being functional and easy to use. After the soap is packaged, it's
ready to be distributed to customers.
The distribution process starts with the finished soap being sent to a distribution center. From
there, the soap is sent to retail stores, online retailers, or directly to customers. Alcanah
Limited uses a variety of methods to distribute its products, including trucks, planes, and
trains. The company also uses a network of distribution partners to ensure that its products
are available in as many places as possible.
One of the most important aspects of the distribution process is tracking and monitoring.
Alcanah Limited uses a system called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to track and
monitor its products. This system uses radio waves to read and transmit information about the
product, including its location, condition, and other data. This helps the company to ensure
that its products are being distributed in a timely and efficient manner.
3.4 SALES AND MARKETING
These are key to Alcanah Limited's success. The company uses a variety of methods to
promote and sell its products, including advertising, social media, and word-of-mouth. The
company also has a strong presence at trade shows and other industry events. One of the most
important aspects of the company's sales and marketing strategy is understanding its
customers and their needs. This helps the company to create products and marketing
campaigns that are relevant and effective.
One of the most important ways that Alcanah Limited understands its customers is through
market research. The company uses a variety of methods to gather information about its
customers, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews. This information is then used to
create customer profiles, which are used to inform product development and marketing
strategies. The company also uses a variety of methods to track and measure the effectiveness
of its sales and marketing efforts.
A/B Testing
This involves creating two versions of a marketing campaign and then testing them against
each other to see which one is more effective. For example, the company might create two
different versions of an email campaign and then track which one leads to more sales. The
company also uses web analytics to track customer behavior on its website.
Pricing
This is a crucial element of the company's marketing strategy. Alcanah Limited uses a
variety of pricing strategies, including value-based pricing, competitive pricing, and
promotional pricing. The company also monitors its competitors' pricing strategies and
adjusts its own pricing accordingly.
Value-based pricing:This strategy involves pricing products based on their perceived value to
customers. Alcanah Limited uses this strategy to price its luxury soap products, which are
perceived as being high-quality and worth the higher price. The company also uses this
strategy to price its limited-edition products, which have a higher perceived value due to their
exclusivity.
Competitive pricing:This strategy involves setting prices based on what competitors are
charging for similar products. The company uses this strategy to keep its prices competitive
and ensure that its products are priced in line with the market. Competitive pricing is also
used to respond to changes in the market and to stay ahead of competitors.
Promotional pricing:This is a pricing strategy that involves offering discounts or special
offers to encourage sales. Alcanah Limited uses this strategy during holiday seasons or other
times when there is increased demand for its products. The company also uses promotional
pricing to clear out inventory or to launch new products.
3.5 SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
Sustainability and environmental responsibility are important to Alcanah Limited. The
company has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. These
include using sustainable ingredients, reducing packaging waste, and using recycled
materials. The company also has a number of goals to further reduce its environmental impact
in the future.
One of the company's biggest initiatives-its commitment to using sustainable palm
oils.Alcanah Limited sources its palm oil from plantations that are certified by the
Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The RSPO is an organization that works to
ensure that palm oil is produced in a way that is environmentally and socially responsible. By
sourcing its palm oil from RSPO-certified plantations, Alcanah Limited is helping to protect
tropical forests and to support the communities that depend on them.

number of measures to reduce its water usage. These include using water-efficient machinery
and equipment, reusing water whenever possible, and recycling wastewater. The company
also has a goal to reduce its water usage by 25% by 2030.
Sustainability is just one aspect of the company's social responsibility efforts. Another area
of focus is its commitment to ethical business practices. Alcanah Limited has a number of
policies in place to ensure that its business is conducted in an ethical and responsible manner.
For example, the company has a code of conduct that all employees must follow.
3.6 FUTURE TREND AND DEVELOPMENT

Soap production process
Soap is made by combining a fat or oil with an alkali, such as lye. The mixture is then heated
and cooled to form a solid or liquid soap.
The soap production process begins with mixing raw materials, including oils and fats. These
materials are heated and then mixed together in a large vessel. A chemical reaction, known as
saponification, occurs when the lye reacts with the oils and fats. The mixture is then heated
again and poured into molds. After cooling, the soap is cut into individual bars. Finally, the
soap is packaged and labeled for sale.
Machinery and ingredients:
Soap production requires specialized machinery, such as mixers, centrifuges, and
molding machines.Common ingredients in soap include fats, oils, lye, water, fragrance.Fat or
oil is a key ingredient, and the company sources this from a variety of sources, including
vegetable oils, animal fats, and other natural sources. The other main ingredient is alkali,
which is typically lye. Lye is a strong chemical, so it must be handled carefully. It is mixed
with the fat or oil at a specific ratio to create soap. Water is also added to the mixture to create
the desired consistency.
In addition to these key ingredients, Alcanah Limited also uses a variety of additives, such as
fragrances, colors, and preservatives. These additives are carefully chosen to meet the needs
of the final product.
Quality Control:
This is a key part of the soap production process. The company has a dedicated quality
control team that monitors the entire process, from raw materials to the finished product. This
team tests the soap at every stage to ensure that it meets the company's high standards.
For example, the quality control team tests the raw materials for purity and consistency. They
also test the soap mixture for the correct ratio of ingredients and for consistency. Finally, they
test the finished product for consistency, appearance, and other qualities. If any problems are
found, the quality control team works with the production.
Packaging and distribution:
Once the soap has been produced, it is packaged and labeled. The company uses a variety
of packaging materials, including cardboard boxes, plastic wrap, and labels. The packaging is
designed to protect the soap and to make it appealing to customers.
Once the soap is packaged, it is then distributed to customers. The company uses a variety of
distribution methods, including direct sales, retail stores, and online sales. The company's
distribution network is designed to get the soap to customers quickly and efficiently.
Sales and marketing:
The company uses a variety of traditional marketing methods, such as print and television
advertising. It also has a strong social media presence, with accounts on a number of
platforms. In addition, the company offers a loyalty program that rewards customers for their
purchases. Finally, the company has a dedicated team of sales representatives who work to
promote its products. The company has accounts on a number of platforms, including
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. It uses these platforms to engage with
customers, share information about its products, and promote sales. For example, the
company runs giveaways and contests on social media to generate interest in its products.
Sustainability and Environmental concerns:
The company has a number of initiatives in place to reduce its environmental impact. For
example, it uses recycled materials in its packaging, and it has implemented a number of
energy-saving measures in its manufacturing facilities. In addition, the company has set goals
to further reduce its environmental impact, such as reducing its water usage and waste
production.
Future trend and development:
The company is aware of the changing landscape of the soap and personal care industry,
and is prepared to adapt to new developments. For example, the company is exploring new
product categories, such as natural and organic products. It is also looking into new
technologies, such as 3D printing, to improve its manufacturing process. There is a growing
demand for products that are made with natural and organic ingredients. The company is
exploring ways to incorporate these ingredients into its products, while maintaining the
quality and affordability that its customers expect. It is also looking into the potential of using
sustainable ingredients, such as those made from plant-based materials.3D printing is a new
technology that is becoming more common in manufacturing. It has the potential to reduce
waste and to make manufacturing more efficient. The company is exploring ways to use 3D
printing in its soap and personal care products. For example, it could potentially use 3D
printing to create custom products or refillable containers.
