Self-Learning Module 5
Circulatory System: Organs and their
functions
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 6 Self-Learning Module 5 on Circulatory System:

Organs and their functions

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 6 Self-Learning Module 5 on Circulatory System:

Organs and their functions

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an
active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

lesson.

Posttest – This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

This module will focus mostly on describing the parts and function of
the circulatory system.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. describe the circulatory system and its major parts;
2. explain how the parts of the circulatory system work together; and
3. identify healthful habits that promotes proper functioning of the
circulatory system.

PRETEST

Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the letter of your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

1. Which of the following pumps the blood that travels to all parts of the
body?
A. artery
B. blood
C. capillaries
D. heart

2. Which of the following is NOT considered as part of circulatory

system?
A. blood
B. blood vessels
C. brain
D. heart

3. Why is circulatory system called the “transport system” of the body?

A. because it transports food nutrients and oxygen to the different
body cells
B. because it digests food and distribute it to the different parts of
the body
C. because it controls the other parts of the body
D. because it collects body waste from the body

4. Why does your heart beat faster after you have run a distance?
A. It has to get more oxygen from the lungs.
B. It has to collect more waste from your body.
C. It has to dispose carbon dioxide from your body.
D. It has to pump more blood to your muscles to replace energy
lost.

5. Why should a person avoid eating too much fatty foods?

A. They can cause arteries to break.
B. They can cause the heart to beat faster.
C. They can produce cholesterol which is harmful to the heart.
D. They can produce too much calcium which hardens the heart.

RECAP

In our previous lesson, you have learned the organs of the respiratory
system and how they work together.

Now, let us try to do a simple activity to help you recall your past
lesson. Ready? Get a piece of paper and pen and be ready to write your
answer.

Rearrange the letter to spell the word being described in each

statement.

1. H A P Y R N X - the passageway of food, water, and air

2. C A T Y V I L A S A N – the path where air enters the body
3. L I A L O E V – the tiny air sacs found inside the lungs where
exchange of gases occurs
4. G U N S L – the major organs of the respiratory system
5. R A G M P H A I D – the dome-shaped muscle that controls
breathing

It is good to know that you really learned a lot from your previous
lesson. I know you are excited to learn the new topic.
LESSON

Your body is made up of different body systems. All the cells in the
organs of each system need materials that are transported by the circulatory
system.

The circulatory system is responsible in

transporting blood and other nutrients throughout
your body. It picks up carbon dioxide and other
wastes in the body organs and gets rid of them.
That is why it is called as the transport system of
the body. The major parts of circulatory system are

tml/

The HEART is the pumping organ of the body. It is

located at the center of your chest slightly tilted to the
left. The heart keeps the blood moving throughout your
body. It contracts and relaxes to move the blood through
the blood vessels. The blood that comes from the
different parts of the body has poor supply of oxygen.
The heart pumps this blood into the lungs to get a new
supply of oxygen. The oxygenated blood flows into the

opposite side of the heart where it is pumped Figure 2. The Heart

heart muscle as it pumps blood is called the heartbeat with-diagram-transparent/
The BLOOD VESSELS are the groups or networks of
small tubes in different sizes that carry blood
throughout your body. These are pathways through
which blood flows and transports food nutrients and
oxygen to all body parts. Blood vessels have three
kinds. These are the arteries, the veins and the
capillaries.
Figure 3. Blood Vessels

od-vessel The Arteries carry blood rich in oxygen or
oxygenated blood from the heart to all parts of the
body. Veins carry blood containing carbon dioxide or deoxygenated blood
from the cells back to your heart. Capillaries are the tiniest blood vessel. The
exchange of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood happens in the capillaries.

BLOOD is also known as the “river of life,” because it carries and

supplies the body cells with materials they need in other to function well.
The blood is pumped throughout the body by the heart, carrying digested
food and oxygen to all body cells and at the same time collecting waste
materials from them. Blood has three components: plasma, red and white
blood cells, and platelets. The plasma is the liquid part of the blood that
comprises about 55% of the blood. The red blood cells carry oxygen rich
blood known as hemoglobin while the white blood cells defend our body
from infections. The platelets help in forming blood clots to prevent the loss
of blood and close up wounds or cut.

Now that you have learn the importance of the circulatory system, it is
also important to take care of it. Here are some of the suggestions which you
can do. (1) Exercise regularly to improve the circulation of the blood. (2)
Avoid smoking cigarettes or drinking alcoholic beverages. (3) Eat a well-
balanced diet. (4) Avoid too much fatty and salty foods. (5) Avoid extreme
emotions, tensions, and unnecessary worries.
ACTIVITIES
