Vertiv™ Liebert® CRV4 Series Air-cooled Precision Air Conditioners Technical Manual

1 Product Overview
This section describes the features, appearance, model description, main components, and optional components of the
Vertiv™ Liebert® CRV4 series air-cooled precision air conditioner (hereafter referred to as CRV4 or the unit).

1.1 Product Introduction

CRV4 is a full-featured precise environmental control system for large, medium, and small computer rooms and modular
computer rooms with high heat density and energy-saving requirements. It provides a proper environment for process
equipment, communication equipment, and computers. CRV4 covers five cooling capacities: 25kW, 35kW, 36kW, 45kW, and
66kW. This variable capacity refrigeration system uses R410A environmentally friendly refrigerant.

The unit is suitable for installing between a row of high-density computer cabinets to form a "hot aisle-cold aisle"
configuration. The heat generated by the equipment enters the unit from the hot aisle, and is filtered, cooled, and then
returned to the cold aisle. The unit can be placed between the cabinets or at the end of a row of cabinets, as it is equipped
with air baffle and can easily adjust the air supply direction to the left, right or both sides.

CRV4 has all the functions of a standard precision air conditioner, including refrigeration, heating, humidification,
dehumidification, air filtration, condensate management, temperature control, alarm function, and data communication.

The standard model adopts air-cooled heat dissipation and can be used with a centralized LVC condenser or a new Liebert
PEX condenser according to different environmental conditions.

The maximum performance of CRV4 is the ultimate cooling capacity that the unit can achieve, and it is the highest
performance that can be achieved when the compressor and fan are increased to the highest speed. On the one hand, this
function is to enable the unit to quickly reduce the current high ambient temperature when it is turned on after the initial
installation, and on the other hand, it is to deal with the sudden high ambient temperature exceeding the design conditions
in the computer room and data center.

3.3.1 Pipe Connection

The indoor and outdoor units are connected by copper pipe welding. The indoor unit supports top piping and bottom
piping.

The horizontal part of the pipe should be tilted downward after being led out of the compressor, and its inclination should
be at least 1:200 (5 mm should be lowered every 1 m). If the pipe is in an area affected by cooling equipment (or under a
raised floor), the pipe should be insulated.

The top and bottom plate of the unit have refrigeration pipe fittings and labels.

3.3.2 Adding Extension Kits (On-site Installation)

If the one-way equivalent length exceeds 30 m, or if the vertical height difference between the indoor unit and the outdoor
unit exceeds the value shown in Table 3.3, you need to add pipeline extension kits. The equivalent length of the
recommended line includes the calculated resistance losses due to bends. The equivalent length of the extension kits is
shown in Table 3.5. Select the kits according to the site situation.

When installing extension kits on site, in order to prevent pipeline exposure, it is recommended to install the check valve of
the extension kit on the outer engineering pipeline of the gas pipe, and install the solenoid valve body on the outer
engineering pipeline of the liquid pipe ball valve, the outside or bottom of the equipment.

During the installation process, you do not need to cut the pipeline of the indoor unit, but open the ball valve for maintaining
pressure and evacuating the system after the installation of the entire system. This avoids the moisture absorption of the
compressor lubricating oil and ensures the safety and life of the compressor. For electrical wiring of extension kits, see
Section 3.5.6.

3.5.7 Teamwork Control

When using the teamwork control function, you need to connect the communication line to the 61 and 62 terminals on the
TB2 terminal block.

3.6 Connecting Condensate Drainage Pipe on Indoor Unit

The condensate water from the humidifier and from the evaporator is gathered in the condensate pan and is then
discharged.

To discharge the condensate from the bottom plate, route the discharge hose out of the gravity condensate drainage hole or
the pump condensate drainage hole, connect the hose with a connector, and then connect it to your drainage system.

To discharge the condensate from the top plate, the discharge copper pipe has been routed out of the top plate. You only
need to connect the copper pipe connector (1/2’’-BSP) to your drainage system.

To use only gravity drainage, route the discharge pipe (inner diameter: 16 mm) out of the gravity condensate drainage hole
and connect the pipe to your drainage system. To ensure that the condensate water can be discharged, set a water trap.
Note the following requirements:

• Use electroplated steel pipe, PVC, or polyethylene pipe with good flexibility as the water pipe.

3.7 Connecting Humidifier Water Inlet Pipe

3.7.1 Connecting Electrode Humidifier Water Inlet Pipe
To supply water to the humidifier from the bottom plate, route the hose (which is reserved inside the unit and has a
threaded connector) out of the water inlet hole on the bottom plate, and connect the hose to your drainage system using the
1/2"-BSP connector.

To supply water to the humidifier from the top plate, a pipe connector has been installed on the humidifier water inlet hole
on the top plate. Connect the connector to your drainage system.

The connection must be sealed to prevent water leakage, and the main line pressure range should be 100 kPa to 700 kPa.
Where the main pipe pressure may exceed 700 kPa, a pressure reducer should be installed. Where the main pipe pressure
is less than 100 kPa, there should be a collection tank and a water pump system.

Water quality requirements: conductivity between 125 and 1250 μs/cm.

NOTE: Some products may contain parts that are subject to local regulations

3.8 Rack Temperature Sensors

Rack temperature sensor is optional. Each unit can be equipped with up to 6 rack temperature sensors. It is recommended
to place the sensor in front of the thermal load to obtain the most accurate temperature value. If the sensors are connected
in series, each sensor monitors the air temperature entering each rack device and the temperature values are used to
control the operation of the unit. The standard position of the sensor is 1.5 m high. Therefore, the sensor should be placed in
the position shown in the figure below.

Otherwise the device will not operate properly. Plug the connector of the rack temperature sensor into the TB3 connector.
After connecting the cable, route the cable from the top or bottom of the unit and connect the cable to the first sensor, then
from the first sensor to the second sensor, and so on, to form a connection chain. Secure the temperature sensor in front of
the hottest heat source in the rack and do not fix it in front of an empty slot. During operation, attach the magnet of each
sensor to the surface of the rack. The sensor should be fixed where there is most likely a lack of sufficient cold air.

The IRM-S02TH address settings for the rack temperature sensor are shown in Table 4.3 Application Guidelines on page 19

5.1.3 Compressor Control

Compressor Start and Stop
The starting and stopping points of the compressor are calculated proportionally according to the control mode selected
by the compressor.

After the unit is turned on and the fan is operating normally for 10s, the compressor is turned on according to demand.

The compressor performs a soft start at start-up, gradually ramps up to a preset speed, and completes the entire start-up
process, followed by dynamic output according to the current cooling demand.

When the unit has dehumidification needs, the compressor will increase the output on top of the current output.

When the compressor is turned off normally, it performs a soft shutdown, and it is turned off after gradually reducing to the
preset speed. The compressor will be turned off directly when a shutdown alarm is generated.

The start and stop of the compressor needs to meet the minimum operation and downtime.

Special Control of the Compressor

During operation, the compressor is limited by special controls such as high and low pressure regulation to ensure reliable
operation of the system.

68 5 Control Logic

Proprietary and Confidential ©2023 Vertiv Group Corp.

Vertiv™ Liebert® CRV4 Series Air-cooled Precision Air Conditioners Technical Manual

5.1.4 Fan Control

Fan Start and Stop
After the unit is started, the fan will remain in operation and output proportionally according to the demand calculated by
cooling, humidification, or heating.

When the unit is running alone, the fan shuts down if the compressor is locked or the unit is shut down.

When the unit is in group control, the fan is turned off when the standby unit or compressor is locked.

Special Control of the Fan

When the fan is running, it is limited by the suction pressure of the unit.

On the one hand, the suction pressure is not too high and exceeds the operating range of the compressor; on the other hand,
the suction pressure is not too low, and the heat exchanger is not frozen.

5.1.5 Electronic Expansion Valve Control

The electronic expansion valve is automatically controlled by the controller according to the superheat set by the unit, and
it will be opened in advance before the compressor is opened to balance the differential pressure on the high- and low-
pressure sides.

The electronic expansion valve has a MOP function that limits the evaporation pressure of the unit to below the preset value.

5.1.6 High Temperature Regulation

When the supply air or return air temperature is too high, the unit enters the high temperature adjustment mode.

After entering the high temperature adjustment mode, the speed demand output of the fan and compressor uses the high
temperature demand of the supply air or the high temperature demand of the return air, whichever is greater, as the output.
The speed of the fan and compressor is linear between the rated speed and the maximum speed.

When the average humidity of the return air is invalid or the average humidity of the return air is ≥ 60%, the high
temperature adjustment is prohibited, and the return air humidity is effective, and the average humidity of the return air is ≤
50%.

5.2 Humidity Control

5.2.1 Humidity Algorithm
The humidity set point is the supply air humidity.

The controller calculates the dew point temperature according to the return air temperature and humidity detection value,
calculates the theoretical supply air humidity from the dew point temperature and the supply air temperature set value, and
calculates the current supply air humidity from the dew point temperature and the current supply air temperature.

The panel shows the theoretical supply air humidity. The humidity demand is also calculated using the theoretical supply
air humidity.

Vertiv™ Liebert® CRV4 Series Air-cooled Precision Air Conditioners Technical Manual

Figure 5.2 Humidity Proportional Band

5.2.2 Dehumidification Control

When the compressor is in operation, the unit determines whether it needs to enter the dehumidification mode according to
the dehumidification demand.

If the compressor is in a shutdown state, the need for dehumidification cannot cause the compressor to start.

Every 24 hours, the dehumidification mode has a limited operating time, after which it can no longer enter the
dehumidification mode.

Dehumidification mode may trigger electric heating to turn on for temperature compensation.

If the temperature of the dehumidification mold is too low, the unit will automatically exit the dehumidification mode.

5.2.3 Humidification Control

The unit determines whether it needs to enter humidification mode according to the humidification demand.

When the actual supply air humidity is already high, the unit will automatically exit the humidification mode.

70 5 Control Logic

Proprietary and Confidential ©2023 Vertiv Group Corp.

Vertiv™ Liebert® CRV4 Series Air-cooled Precision Air Conditioners Technical Manual

5.3 Heating
5.3.1 Dehumidification Temperature Compensation
After the unit enters the dehumidification mode, the output of the compressor is additionally greater than the current
cooling demand, and if the temperature is too low (supply air or return air temperature, depending on the control mode), the
electric heating will be turned on for temperature compensation.

When the dehumidification mode ends or is aborted, the temperature compensation is stopped.

5.3.2 Separate Heating

When the unit stops refrigeration and the ambient temperature is still particularly low, the electric heating will be turned on
separately to increase the temperature.

5.4 Oil Return Operation

When the heat load of the unit is low, the compressor will run at a low speed, which may cause difficulty in the compressor
oil return, so the unit will start the oil return operation.

When the compressor runs at a low speed for a certain period of time (oil return cycle), the unit will enter the oil return
operation mode, the compressor rises to the preset oil return speed operation. After reaching the oil return running time, the
compressor exits the oil return operation mode.

5.5 Condensate Pump Control

Under normal operating conditions, the condensate pump is controlled by a water level switch (water level detection plate)
in the water pan.

The unit is also equipped with a high-water level switch. When a high water level alarm is detected, even if the water level
switch does not operate, the unit will also turn on the condensate pump.

5.6 Shutdown Mode

5.6.1 Shutdown Types
The shutdown mode is divided into panel shutdown, monitoring shutdown, and remote shutdown.

Panel shutdown refers to the display board switch key setting.

Monitoring shutdown refers to communication shutdown through background monitoring.

Remote shutdown refers to the shutdown enable of the corresponding switch input.

5.6.2 Shutdown Logic

Panel shutdown, monitoring shutdown, remote shutdown are series relationships. Either one causes unit shutdown, and three
startups causes unit startup.

Display board setting can set the panel shutdown and the monitoring shutdown to power-on.

In the presence of multiple shutdowns, the priority displayed is: remote shutdown→ panel shutdown→ monitoring
shutdown.

5.7.2 Typical Standby Features

One or several units can be set as standby, and the usual state of standby is shutdown (wind turbine).

Standby functions rotate on a daily basis (time can be set). Rotations are performed by an optional number. For example, in
the case of 4 units and 2 standby units, if the number of rotations is 1, the order of standby rotations is from 1-2 to 2-3 to 3-4.
If the number of rotations is 2, the alternate rotation sequence is 1-2 to 3-4.

If a certain operating unit in the group cannot be contacted or after the compressor locks or the high temperature alarm or
temperature sensor fails, a standby unit will be started, and all standby units will be started.
