Granny Square Bag
(Crochet)

This granny square bag is easy to crochet. Colorful granny squares made and sewn

Terminology:
CH = Chain DC = Double Crochet HDC = Half Double Crochet
RPT = Repeat SC = Single Crochet SLST = Slip Stitch
ST= Stitch YO = Yarn Over
3-PUFF = [YO, insert hook into ST, draw up loop] 3 times. YO, remove all loops.
4-PUFF = [YO, insert hook into ST, draw up loop] 4 times. YO, remove all loops.
Size/Gauge:
Front/Back Panel Width = 15", Front/Back Height (minus handle) = 10.5", Sides
Depth = 3". Gauge = 15 SC x 17 ROWs = 4” SQ.
Materials:
600 yds total of 100% cotton worsted weight yarn. Sample used Sugar n Cream. 2
full skeins of Ecru (380 yds) and then about 50 yds each of Yellow, Cornflower,
Coral Rose, and Beach Glass. Size G 4 mm crochet. Yarn needle. Scissors. Stitch
markers. Optional lining material.

SQUARE (Make 12 Squares, alternating colors as desired).

With Coral yarn, CH 4. SLST to first ST to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC). CH 1. RPT [DC, CH 1] 15 times. SLST to top of CH-3.
Fasten off. Total = 16 DC with CH-1s in between.
RND 2: With Yellow yarn, place slipknot on hook. Insert into any CH-1 space and
begin 3-PUFF, counting the slipknot as the first YO. CH 1. RPT [In next CH-1, 3-PUFF,
CH 1] around. Total = 16 3-PUFFs with CH-1s in between. Fasten off.
RND 3: With Beach yarn, place slipknot on hook. Insert into any CH-1 space and
begin 4-PUFF, counting the slipknot as the first YO. CH 2. RPT [In next CH-1, 4-PUFF,
CH 1] around. Total = 16 4-PUFFs with CH-2s in between. Fasten off.
RND 4: With cornflower yarn, place slipknot on hook. SLST into any CH-2 space
(corner #1). CH 3 (counts as 1 DC). In same CH-2 space, 2 DC, CH 1, 3 DC. RPT [In
next CH-2 space, 3 HDC] 3 times. In next CH-2 space (corner #2), (3 DC, CH 1, 3 DC).
RPT [In next CH-2 space, 3 HDC] 3 times. In next CH-2 space (corner #3), (3 DC, CH
1, 3 DC). RPT [In next CH-2 space, 3 HDC] 3 times. In next CH-2 space (corner #4), (3
DC, CH 1, 3 DC). SLST to top of CH-3. Fasten off.
RND 5: With Ecru yarn, place slipknot on hook. SC in any corner. In same corner,
(SC, CH 1, 2 SC). SC in every ST along side #1. In second corner, (2 SC, CH 1, 2 SC). SC
in every ST along side #2. In third corner, (2 SC, CH 1, 2 SC). SC in every ST along
side #3. In fourth corner, (2 SC, CH 1, 2 SC). SC in every ST along side #4. SLST to
first SC. Fasten off.
SEWING SQUARES
Sew 6 squares together as shown in the photo (2 rows of 3 squares across) for the
front. Once completed, place a 2-row SC border around the piece, consisting of 1
SC along each ST of the sides, and 3 SC in each corner. Repeat with 6
squares/border for the back of the bag.
SIDES (Make 1 long piece)
With Ecru, CH 11.
ROW 1: Skip first CH and SC in each CH across. CH 1, turn. Total = 10 SC.
ROWs 2-146+: SC in each ST across. CH 1, turn. Total = 10 SC.
Continue making ROWs to fit along both sides and bottom of bag. Place ST marker
in last loop of ST and do not fasten off.
SEWING SIDES
Take front SQUARES piece, and sew SIDES starting on one side, continuing across
bottom, then up other side. Adjust ROWs of SIDES by adding or ripping out as

needed. Fasten off the SIDES piece. Sew SIDES to back SQUARES piece, ensuring
each granny square lines up with the front side granny square as you sew. Fasten
all ends securely.
HANDLES
Place 4 ST markers around bag to mark handles, each above the center of the four
outer granny squares (or wherever you prefer). Starting at the front right ST
marker (for right handers) or front left (for left-handers), make 2 rows of SC around
the top edge.
ROW 3: CH 85 (or any length for the handle opening). SLST to next front-side ST
marker. SC over to next back-side ST marker. CH 85. SLST to next back-side ST
marker. SC over to initial CH-85.
ROWs 4-7: SC around, going into each CH of the front CH-85 handle, proceed along
the sides, go over the back CH-85 handle, and proceed along the sides. Once ROW
7 is complete, SLST to next ST and fasten off.
LINING
Sew an optional lining into the bag if desired.
