KARUME INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

(NTA LEVEL8)
PROJECT PROPOSAL
PROJECT TITLE:AUTOMATIC PROTECTING WITH MONITORING
SYSTEM FOR DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMER.
STUDENT NAME: YASINI TWAHA OMARY,
REGISTRATION NUMBER: (KIST/BEE/20/0026).
PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Distribution transformers are currently manually monitored and

traditionally protected using fuses.

1
MAIN OBJECTIVE

• To design and implement an automatic monitoring and protection

system for distribution transformer.

2
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES.
• Designing of;-

➢Current and voltage sensing circuits.

➢Transformer oil level, and temperature sensing circuits.

• Software programming.
• System simulation.

3
DATA ANALYSIS.
❖Monitored data.

• Voltage.

➢Over voltage, above from 250V

➢Under voltage, below from 200V

• Over temperature, above from 650C.

• Over current 0.06A.

• Lower oil level , below 25%

4
DATA ANALYSIS. CONT…
❖Components
• Arduino uno
➢Operating voltage 7V-12V dc.
• ESP 32.
➢Operating voltage 2.2V- 3.6V dc.
• Sensors.
➢Operating voltage 5V dc.
• Transformer
➢220V-101V stepdown, JBK5 250VA. 5
EXISTING SYSTEM.
• Manually monitored.

• Traditionally protected.

❖Drawbacks of the existing system are ;-

➢Onetime protection.

➢Wastage of time.

➢Lack of automation.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

• Automation.

➢Automatically monitoring the distribution Transformer.

➢Automatic disconnection from the supply.

• Communication capability.

• Remotely controlled.

OBSERVATIONS
❖Under normal operating condition,

➢System can be turned on or off,

➢Also the load can be disconnected and reconnected again.

❖Under fault conditions,

➢System shuts down the Transformer,

➢Message was sent to the firebase to inform about the fault type.

16
CONCLUSION

• This system if put to use in distribution transformer for protection

can serve the purpose with greater advantages than the existing system

17
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Use of power semiconductor devices.

• Ensuring of self regulation of the system from current fault.

• Designation of the power supply to supply the system.

• Ensuring that the parameters are correctly sent to the utility.

• Improving the system response.

18
PROJECT COST
• 564,500 tzs.
