8.1 The value of a dry-clean machine with an initial cost of R295 000,
reduces at r % p.a. on reducing balance. After five years the machinery
value of R130 000. Calculate the rate r at which the machine
depreciates. (3)

8.2 Calculate the effective rate per annum if an investment earns interest
at a rate of 7,3% p.a., compounded monthly.

8.3 The output of an investment a businesswoman took out 15 years ago is


R1 400 000. In the last six years before the investment was terminated,
it earned interest of 13.5% p.a., compounded half yearly. During the
first nine years, the interest earned was 10% p.a., compounded
monthly. Calculate the initial investment. (4)

8.4 Tholifa deposits R40 000 into a savings account for 12 years. For the
first five years, the account earns interest of 15.5% p.a. compounded
quarterly. At the end of the fifth year, he deposits an extra R20 000. At
that stage, the interest rate changes to 12% p.a. compounded weekly.
Then after nine years, Tholifa withdraws R34 897, and the interest rate
changes to 8% p.a., compounded monthly. Calculate how much is the
account after 12 years. (6)

9.1 A debate club sold 50 tickets for fundraising purposes. Janet buys 5
tickets. Two draws are then done during assembly.

9.1.1 Draw a tree diagram to represent Janet’s chances to win a (3)

9.1.2 Calculate the probability that Janet will win:

(a) two prizes (2)

(b) at least one prize (2)

9.2 Events A and B are such that P(A) = 0.5, P(not B) = 0.3 and P(A or B)
= 0.8. Are A and B independent events? Justify your answer with (3)
appropriate calculations.

The Department of Sports conducted a survey that involved a group of


75 runners. The following information was collected:

• 40 like to run half-marathon (H) races.
• 35 athletes took part in marathon (M) races.
• 18 run the 10km and the marathon.
• 21 run half-marathon and marathon races.

• 9 like to run all three races.
• x athletes ran the 10km and half-marathon, but not the marathon.
10.1 Show the information in a Venn diagram. (5)

10.2 Calculate the value of x , the number of athletes who ran the 10km and (2)
half-marathon, but not the marathon.

10.3 Determine the probability that a randomly chosen runner at least runs (3)
two of the three races.
