Procedures for Task One

Look at Task One.

(Allow a 15-second pause while pupils familiarise themselves with the task.)

Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice.

You are going to listen to a weather forecast.

Good morning. This is John Smith with your weekly weather forecast. Thanks for joining us.

As you might have noticed, mist and fog covered most of the island this Monday morning. The
heatwave that slowed everybody down this weekend is showing no signs of letting up today and
by afternoon, temperatures will soar to over 40 degrees Celsius. So don’t leave home without a
cap! This evening, expect temperatures to fall just slightly. Looks like sleeping in a hammock
outdoors may be the only way to catch some sleep tonight if you don’t have air conditioning.

Now let’s have a look at Tuesday’s weather. Tomorrow, strong winds coming in from the north
are going to finally cool things down for us. The morning will be very breezy, with heavy cloud
cover. In the morning, expect scattered rain showers all over the island, so you mustn’t leave
home without your umbrella! After a wet start, the rain will stop in the afternoon, followed by
much drier weather and partly cloudy skies for the night. The minimum temperature for Tuesday
night will be 20 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead this week, we can expect unstable weather with mostly cloudy skies and drizzle
all day on Wednesday. On Thursday we might even see a thunderstorm or two with
temperatures cooling down to around 23 degrees Celsius. The weather will clear by Friday
making way for a bright scorching weekend once again.

You are going to listen to a conversation between two friends. Sam tells Frankie how he was
caught in a thunderstorm.

Frankie: Hey Sam! How are you?

Sam: Hello Frankie. I am safe and sound today, unlike yesterday! It was just my luck
to encounter heavy rain when I went out alone on my bike.

Frankie: Didn’t you take your waterproof jacket?

Sam: I didn’t bother. When I left home at noon, the sky was clear. There wasn’t a single cloud
anywhere in sight. I was impatient to set off. I just grabbed my helmet and left. About twenty
minutes later, I noticed dark clouds rapidly gathering above me, but I just kept going. I was
hoping that the clouds would go away. My hopes were shattered when suddenly, heavy rain
began to pour, and in a few seconds, I was completely drenched. To make matters worse,
lightning flashed dangerously. The ear-splitting thunder and strong wind did not help either. I
was afraid of losing my balance and falling off my bike. Good thing I was wearing my helmet.

Frankie: Nature is such a force, isn’t it? Were you scared? What did you do?

Sam: The flashes of lightning and the deafening claps of thunder terrified me. However, I
plucked up courage and cycled towards a large tree under which I could take cover. At least,
the tree provided some shelter from the rain.

Frankie: Oh, but that’s dangerous!

Sam: Yes, I know it’s dangerous to stay under a tree during a thunderstorm but there was no
other shelter nearby. I didn’t stay long. I was soaking wet anyway, so returning home was my
only option.

Frankie: And did you just leave?

Sam: Yes, I had no choice. I started to make my way back home. It was just about the strongest
storm I had ever seen. The thick rain made riding the bicycle terribly difficult. I could not see
more than a couple of metres in front of me. At one point, a car flashed past me. It was too close
for comfort. The driver probably didn't even see me. I thought it was better to stop somewhere
before I was hit by another car.

Frankie: That’s scary! What happened next?

Sam: Fortunately, I spotted a bus stop with a roof and I cycled as fast as I could towards it.
Under there I felt safe, at least. I had to share the spot with a dozen other people who were
also soaked to the skin. It was a bit uncomfortable and a squeeze but there was no other option.
Nobody complained! We just stood there and watched. The storm was raging in full force around
us. I felt very small and helpless. I could do nothing but observe this awesome display of power
by nature.

Frankie: Did you have to wait long? You must have been freezing.

Sam: Thankfully, no. After about an hour, the rain slowed down to a drizzle and the wind died.
The worst of the storm was over. Happily, I got on my bicycle and pedalled home.

Frankie: What a relief! I’m so glad you made it!

Sam: It goes without saying that from now on, I will always check the weather forecast before
I go on a bike ride!
