Worksheet A – READING AND VOCABULARY

1. Quick Christmas Quiz


 The aim of this exercise is to introduce the topic of Christmas through a brief reading activity.
After you have done the quiz you may wish to follow it up with some writing practice and ask
students to write their own Christmas quiz.
 Comments: You’ll have no problems figuring the answers, just bear in mind that in 3. Oops… I did it
again! Is a song by Britney Spears and All Star is a song by Smash Mouth – you can hear it at the
beginning of the ‘Shrek’ movie)

2. What’s wrong with that?!


 The aim of this activity is to provide some Christmas vocabulary practice as well as help students
learn words in lexical groups.

Comment: You will need to explain separately words such as Christmas cracker and marshmallows. The
definitions below should be helpful:
 Christmas cracker - a tube of coloured paper that two people pull apart at Christmas in
Britain for fun. It makes a loud sound as it is pulled apart, and usually contains a small toy
 marshmallow - a very soft light white or pink sweet, made of sugar and egg white

3. Messed up!
 In this exercise you can see if students memorized the words given earlier. My suggestion is to let
the students write it individually and then ask them for the answers to each point.

1. Fill in the gaps!


 The aim of this exercise is to make sure that students understand the text. You can write the
unknown words on the board and explain each one separately.

Christmas
In my family we start our Christmas preparations by buying the CHRISTMAS TREE (1) and decorating it
with things like SWEETS(2). My mommy tells me to go to BED(3) earlier, but I don’t know why. I think
she does not want me to disturb Santa Claus – he always comes into our house through the CHIMNEY (4)
and leaves the PRESENTS (5) under the Christmas tree. We usually leave some MILK (6) and some
cookies on a PLATE (7) for him to eat. We also leave some CARROTS(8) for his REINDEER(9).There is
never anything left on the plate in the MORNING(10).

2. True or false – can you tell me?

 The aim of this activity is to continue with the topic of Christmas through a brief reading activity.
After you have done the exercise you may wish to follow it up with some writing practice and ask
students to write their own true/false sentences.
