Field Study 1: Observation of Teaching - Learning in Actual School

Environment. Field Study is a subject that student taking the course of

education need to undergo before graduating. This provides them

knowledge and awareness about the learning environment, classroom

management, classroom rules, competencies of an effective teacher,

and the over all aspect of a student when inside and outside of the

classroom. It offers opportunities and prospects for career development

as student observer observes the school structure, the classroom

routines and management, school facilities, the teacher, the parent and

most especially the student.

In this Field Study 1, FS students involved in the observation of

teaching-learning in actual school environment. Wherein my journey

and experiences provides a huge help to be an effective teacher in the

future. With the help of my observation and acquired learning I am able

to determine and be aware with the problem regarding to the low

performances, poor retention, slow comprehension, student’s lack of

attention during class hours, and the mismanagement that usually

occur in the learning environment.

In addition, Knowing the issues and problem facing by the teachers and

how they handle it could lead to better changes and improvement to

provide efficient education for all. To whom students more comfortable

with and what factors influence the behavior of a student inside and

3
outside of the classroom. And what are the reasons why there’s poor

participation and retention of the students. All of this provides

awareness of the true agenda in school/classroom setting.

Having enough knowledge to discover the problem and issues that

occurs in actual school environment and how teachers facilitate student

learning provide training to all FS student to be competent teachers in

the future through observation. And the awareness how teachers

changed the teaching strategies and styles to provide results for an

effective education for the students regarding to the created content

and learning outcomes.

Beliefs on Teaching and Learning

In the past, I view school as a place where I can meet lot of new

friends that I could interact with and share my interest/hobbies in life.

7
That time, I wasn’t thinking nor interest about the learning and

development that the school provided for me through the help of my

teachers. My beliefs was to enjoy in school and I’ve been thinking

proceeding to another level and passing all of my subject was my

responsibility without considering and acknowledging the improvement

and learning embark by my teachers. Nothing serious for me before

because I go to school just to listen to teacher's discussion and answer

examination, and go home afterwards. I don't even appreciate the

feeling of a child who have a good education because of my innocence. I

thought everyone has the freedom to learn at school but unfortunately

not. There are children who can't make it to the school because of

poverty and some reasons. And sadly, before, I treat learning as nothing

but enjoyment.

Due to my experiences, growth and acquired learning my belief in

teaching and learning in school has changed and I realized that learning

is more than just an enjoyment.

Teaching is not simple as what I believed before. It is not just about

reading books and writing on the blackboard for student's knowledge.

Rather, it is about how can you embark learning to all your students and

how can you provide growth and development. Teaching is difficult

because you have to deal with diverse student including their behavior,

beliefs, practices and even their view in life. Since, we all know that

students have different level in terms of their capabilities and self-

8
confidence. They need to be provided with an equal treatment and

attention by the teachers. Therefore, teaching students with diversity is

difficult because you have to plan and provide teaching strategies on

how can you make the teaching process more interesting and effective

for students learning. Also, I believe that teaching is not just about

teaching your students with your lesson but it is about how can you lead

your student into a successful field/career because you are not just

teaching your students to be knowledgeable but you are preparing them

for their future. And that is your main goal as their teacher.

Learning is also difficult than everyone's think. You need to have a

dedicated heart and persistent mind. Student’s learning is not literally

base on their grades but is about how can they use and apply their

acquired learning to a real world situation. Learning sometimes requires

a style or strategy on how can students learn effectively. Students are

doing their best or what they can do just to reach the expectations and

standard of their parents, teachers and even the demand of the society

for them. Learning process takes time in order for the students to be

competent enough and to have development with their skills and

intelligence to pursue their life goals.

Brief Description of FS Observation Site

As my FS Journey start, I was so overwhelmed and full of excitement

and expectations. Knowing that we will be learning and observing the

actual school environment of Culasi National High School. This

9
institution welcomed us nicely and with a grateful heart. Students as

well as our resource teacher treated us as an official teacher through

calling us using the word “Ma’am”. Based on my observation, the

students are polite that they are disciplined enough to greet us while

bowing their heads as a sign of their respect. While going around, I

observed that they have lots of facilities that support the learning and

development of their students such as the Library, Computer Lab.,

Science Laboratory, Audio Visual/ Learning Resource Center and even

Teen Center that focuses on developing and improving the skills and

talents of their students. The greener environment is the my favorite

part in Culasi National High School because they have lots of gardens

besides of the classrooms and the school is surrounded by tress even in

the hallway. The students continuously trained about the proper waste

disposal that maintain the cleanliness of the surroundings. However,

there are still instances that made me disappointed most especially with

the behaviour of some students. During the discussion process, the

student go around inside of the classroom and they even go out without

the consent of their teachers. They even fighting and teasing each other

without considering the presence of their teachers and visitors. And

they always complaining about the performances or activities provided

by their teachers. Which I believed that this kind of behaviors possessed

by the students are sign of disrespect and unethical manner. However,

despite of the behavior of the students, teachers has patience to

10
understand the actions and attitude of their students. They still prioritize

student’s learning and development through using different kinds of

teaching strategies and instructional materials to support and make the

learning process more easier and can be clearly understand by the

students. They have students organization that teach and train students

to be a great leader and a role model to their fellow students. Generally,

this institution is flexible to accommodate the learning needs of the

students and they provide equal and quality education.

Observations: Environment, Learners, and Teachers

11
Reflections

Education has lots to give, offer and change. One of its

educational technique is the Field Study. Through this, school makes the

educational process more active. The Field Study students requires to

observe in the field of teaching that helps them to be aware and work in

12
real life situations. They develop solutions to school problems both in

learning environment and student's learning.

Fortunately, in my journey I learned and realized that there is always

something you can learn and learned from everything. Field

Study 1 about observation of Teaching-Learning gives additional

knowledge about the routines inside the classroom, even the

management, the organization of the learning environment and how the

students react to these scenarios. Also how the students behave inside

the classroom and interact to fellow students. How the teacher handle

problems occurring during and after discussion. Students have different

styles of learning. But the teacher always find ways to meet that needs

and provide them effective education. They sometimes make their own

decision while the teacher change that decision to much better.

Teachers become the bridge of the gap inside the classroom and create

a conducive environment to learn. There is nothing easy when making

changes to someone's life especially in educating students for

betterment.

However, as a field study student I could reflect that this journey

of mine is not just about observing, learning, improving and career

developing but there are times and I couldn’t deny the fact that I

become anxious, hesitant and scared. Thinking what will happened in

the future and lot of questions running in my mind like “how I can make

my students comfortable with me?”, “will my students be satisfy with

13
my teaching strategy?”, “how can I make my teaching process effective

and efficient?”, and the most scared question is “will I become a great

teacher?”. while observing, I always imagine and put myself in the

position of my Resource Teacher. Through that way, it lessen the

burdens and worries I’ve been carrying and it prepares me to my future

career.

Retrospection

Field Study was a good experience to observe and participate in

the field of teaching. There are plenty of realizations after which made

me near prepared to become future educator. Those observations

brought me to a conclusion that school is full of differences, enjoyment

and even challenges to overcome not only by the student but by the

14
teachers as well. Students who loved to enjoy their circle of friends,

happily go out after discussion and share thoughts/experiences inside

the classroom and canteen are some of the happy experiences I

observed. Also, there are some cases that student who like to be alone

yet there is a fellow student who will tease and make friend with that

students which result an unexpected friendship and interaction. How

beautiful to see that school is a place also of socialization. Taught

everyone to choose friendship over competition with a realizations of

achievement is nothing without good friends. I love seeing students

enjoying and acknowledging the company of each other. Looking the

advantage of a conducive environment to all student who learn and

grow with each other despite of diversity is a great privilege to promote

inclusive education and equal rights. Learning environment where you

can learn, grow and develop competences is an effective environment

for education that each students long for.

But after all, problems are everywhere and can ruin everything if you let

these conquer you. For some instances, students have problem with

discipline inside the classroom and seemed difficult for them to

overcome and it give hard time to teachers as they manage and deal

that kind of behavior of their students. Since, teacher is persistent,

innovative and considerate, these issues been solved for the better

learning environment and successful delivering of good quality

education and discipline.

15
Teacher and students relationship is the bridge that gap differences. A

good foundation of effective learning. Education is not just about going

to school, seat, learn and participate rather a place to build trust to

people who can be your confidant. Safe for sharing problems where

your worries turn into blessing. There is something more special that an

education can offer. And by experiencing it, I've learned how blessed a

person can be and extraordinary when he/she is in the school.
