• Test Sample.
Because of the above variables and other possible factors, your system may work under unforeseen
circumstances that might contain unknown hazards. Incorrect system installation, operation, or
maintenance may lead to death, personal injuries or equipment/Sample damages. Common sense and
thorough knowledge of the system's performances may help you develop proper and safe operating
methods.
Prior to your first attempt to perform any system operations, you should read this Guide and all other Guides companying
the system. This will help you get a general idea of the system, so as to avoid possible hazards.
Locating Close/Switch Points
You should learn about the close/switch positions corresponding to each energy source of the system, including
hydraulic, gas, electricity, and water sources, to make sure these energy sources can be isolated from the system when
necessary.
Knowing Plant's Safety Processes
Most facilities have their own internal procedures and regulations as safety practices. You should learn about these safety
practices and apply them in daily system operations.
Learning Controls
When operating the system for the first time, you should run the system according to operating procedures without
powering the system on. Check all hardware and software controls, and understand their functions and what adjustments
should be made. If you feel fuzzy about any control functions or adjustment methods, please consult relevant information
until you have a pretty clear mind.
Getting First Aid Supplies Ready
Accidents may occur even if you are very careful. Please properly arrange the schedule of operators, to ensure that there
will always be properly trained personnel in the vicinity who can carry out first aids. Also, post the local emergency
contact information within the sight of system operators.
Knowing Potential Crush Positions
Know potential crush positions on the system, and keep personnel and equipment away from these areas.
Understanding Electrical Hazards
Minimize risks of electrical shocks after the system is powered on. Wear insulated coveralls and use fully insulated tools
for any electrical operations, and avoid touching bare wires or switch contacts. Turn off the power if possible before
operating or approaching any electrical system components. Abide by precautions for other high-voltage machinery.
Safe Distance of Irrelevant Personnel
Irrelevant personnel should be kept a safe distance from the equipment. When conducting tests, do not let any irrelevant
person to touch the Sample or equipment.
Do not wear a tie, shop aprons, loose clothing, or jewellery, or let the long hair loose, to avoid them being
stuck into equipment, thereby causing personal injuries. Take off your loose clothing or jewellery, or tie
your hair up.
Emptying Combustible Liquids in Sample
Before installing the container or component, empty combustible liquids inside the container or component.
Where necessary, replace combustible liquids with non-flammable ones, to maintain an appropriate
proportion of weight and balance.
Check the bolt classifications and torques
In order to ensure product reliability, the torque of fasteners (such as bolts and connecting rods) in MTS
systems must comply with requirements specified. Due to high strengths and high pressures of MTS testing
equipment, the actual torque higher than or lower than the ratings could lead to dangers..
In rare cases, failures may occur even when fasteners are correctly installed. Faults often occur during
tightening, and may even occur several days later. Such faults may result in fasteners springing off at high
speed. As a result, on-site personnel are better to avoid being on a straight line with or under assemblies that
contain large or long fasteners.
Keeping Indoor Area Clean
Keep the floor of the work area clean. Do not leave any tools, facilities, or other items unrelated to the test
on the floor, system or accessories.
Protecting Hoses and Cables
Avoid cables to be overheated, as they can cause the hardening and, ultimately, failures of cables. Ensure
that appropriate strain relief apparatus is installed near cables and plugs of connectors. Do not use plugs of
connectors to release strain.
Avoid all system hoses and cables to get in touch with sharp or rough objects, as they may cause damages to
hoses or cables. It is forbidden to stampede or use heavy objects to press against hoses or cables. During
considerations of system layout and cabling, cables and hoses should be placed away from areas that may
cause damages to them.
Recording Changes Made
In the event that you make any changes to any operating procedures, record all changes made and the dates
when they are made in the Guide.
Test Area Protection
When testing hazardous Samples (such as crisp or fragile materials, or internally-pressurized materials), use
protective shells, such as cages, shields and special laboratory layout.
Do Not Disable Safety Apparatus
Your system may be equipped with active or passive safety apparatus. Do not disable such apparatus to
avoid unexpected system actions.
Whenever fuses of the system or power sources are replaced, ensure that a suitable fuse is used and
installed correctly. Fuses thicker or thinner than the prescribed specifications may lead to overheat of cables
and explosion of the fuse. And either case may cause a fire.
Providing Adequate Lighting
Ensure adequate lighting, to minimize the odds of mal-operations, equipment damages, and personal
injuries. Make sure to have a clear vision of all tasks.
Ensuring Equipment Stability
Ensure that the equipment is stable or has been installed with seismic isolation device. Some tests may
cause resonance to the equipment as well as shocks to and movements of the equipment.
Regular Inspection
During impact process, press Scram to check braking torque and respond speed, and check if there is
leakage in air circuit.
Wear goggles when operating the pendulum impact testing equipment or performing tests on fragile
Samples or on Samples that contain peculiar fragile parts.
If you may be exposed to liquids, chemicals or powders that irritate or damage the skin, the respiratory
system or eyes, wear personal protective equipment (such as gloves, boots, coveralls or respirators).
Test Area Protection
When testing hazardous Samples (such as crisp or fragile materials, or internally-pressurized materials), use
protective shells, such as cages, shields and special laboratory layout.
Sample Temperature Changes
During cyclic testing, the Sample may catch fire due to overheating. So, you need to wear personal
protective gears, such as gloves, when handling Samples.
Handling chemicals safely
When using or handling chemicals (such as cleaning fluids, hydraulic oil, batteries, contaminated parts,
electro-hydraulic solutions, or maintenance wastes), first consult the MSDS document corresponding to the
concerned material, and then adopt measures and devices suitable for the safe handling and use of the
chemical. Ensure that chemicals are handled appropriately.
Do Not Interfere with Encoder
When the power is switched on, do not crash, swing, adjust, disconnect, or otherwise interfere with the
encoder or its cables.
Ensure cable safety
Do not make any changes to cable connections when the system is powered on. Changing cable
connections during equipment operations may lead to fast, abnormal system responses. In addition, make
sure that all cables are properly connected after you have made any changes to system configurations.
Remaining Vigilant
Avoid working for long time without taking rests. Also, try not to do repetitive, unchanging or monotonous
work over long periods, as this may easily cause accidents or hazards. If you are over familiar with the
work environment, you tend to overlook potential hazards in the environment.
Avoiding Moving Equipment/Crush Points
Keep clear of mechanical linkage devices, connection cables, and moving hoses, as you may be caught,
squeezed, or wrapped therein, or dragged by their movements. Forces generated by the system can pinch,
cut or crack any object by which the system passes, causing serious injuries. So, avoid all potential crush
points. Most test systems can produce sudden, strong movements. Do not think that your reaction is fast
enough to keep you from any dangers in the case of system failures.
Ensure that workstation PCs, remote terminals, and electronic consoles are far away from the radio
frequency (RF) transmitter. Strong RF electromagnetic fields can make sensitive circuits of the system
unstable.

Safety Introduction
Become familiar with the following information:
• Impact Zone
Warning:
The impact zone exists within the swinging range of the pendulum; namely, within the
range of the shield.
The pendulum is an apparatus that will swing and make impact under the effect of gravity,
and therefore possesses a determined impacting force, hitting any object within its
swinging range. All body parts must be kept clear of the swinging range of the pendulum.
• Press the Emergency Stop button to cut the motor power and stop testing. Twist the Emergency
Stop button clockwise to release the Emergency Stop. In the event of an emergency, use the
Emergency Stop switch to stop your test.
• Safety shield
The shield is equipped with an access control switch. When any door of the shield is opened, it will stop the
test and hold the pendulum in whatever position it was in at the time.

Support Frame
The MTS Exceed 22 Series metal pendulum is provided with three kinds of power, namely, 450J, 300J,and
150J.In accordance with the standard requirements, the power consumed for thrusting the sample should be
between 10%-80% of the maximum energy of the pendulum. When there are pendulums with several
specifications, the pendulum that utilizes a large amount of power is recommended for the test.
★ Note: The installation direction of the pendulum is shown in the following figure.
★ Note: After the pendulum is installed, be sure to check that it is installed correctly; otherwise, it can lead
to serious consequence.
★Note: You are prohibited from adding or reducing the number of parts and components on the pendulum;
doing so will change to the pendulum's parameters and affect the test results.
Clamps

Pendulum
MTS Exceed 22 Series metal pendulum is provided with two kinds of clamps, those being ISO/GB and
ASTM. In accordance with the test requirements, install the appropriate clamps and adjust the span.
Relief Valve
Inert the compressed air hose (Dia. 8mm) to the air inlet connector.
The equipment is using 0.4-0.8MPa compressed air. Pressure can be adjusted to range value via reducing
valve if the compressed air source exceeds the range.
Reset Angle
After the testing equipment is started, wait for 15s, and then enter the main interface of the touch screen and
set the language. To ensure the safety and correctness of test data, the equipment should perform clearing
action every time it's started. As shown in the following figure, touch Reset (or click the (Reset) button at
the control panel), the testing equipment will perform the clearing action. When the pendulum is at the
vertical position and the angle has no change, the testing equipment sets this angle as zero degree.
Touch the Reset (or click the Reset button on the control panel), the testing equipment will perform the
clearing action. When the pendulum is at the vertical position and the angle does not change, the testing
equipment sets the angle at zero degree.
After the clearing action is finished, enter the main interface of the touch screen where you can choose each
operation interface to operate.

compensation value of energy loss.
Tap Pointer Parameters to go into the surface, then select Use Pointer or No Pointer mode:
No Pointer: A test method which no pointer is used during the impact test process. In the case where no
pointer testing method is used, system will only include the air and bearing induced energy loss and exclude
the pointer friction-induced energy loss when calculating the absorbing energy. Tap and press No Pointer
icon can switch to No Pointer testing method. In the case where no pointer testing method is used, system
will include the air and bearing-induced energy loss and pointer friction-induced energy loss when
calculating the absorbing energy, as illustrated above. In the case where a pointer is used, touch the bottom
of the screen and it will display Pointer icon, and it will disappear when no pointer is used.
Collecting Pendulum
The principle of the pendulum impact test is to place the notch sample with a specified geometric shape
between two supports on the testing equipment, with the notch facing away from the impact. When the
sample is hit by the pendulum, the energy absorbed by the sample is measured.
Warning:
The pendulum is a device that swings and causes impact under the effect of gravity.
Incorrect installation or operations may lead to dangers, which may further cause damages
to your equipment and Sample and even serious personal injuries or deaths.
All body parts must be kept clear of the swinging area of the pendulum.
After the clearing action is finished, switch the touch screen to the Main Control interface, touch the Move
Pendulum icon (or click the Move Pendulum button on the control panel) to rotate the pendulum counter-
clockwise and to have it hanging from the hanging device position when it's rotated to the pre-set angle.
Placing Sample
After the pendulum is done moving and is left hanging, open the sliding door of the shield, and place the
sample onto the support clamps. The Charpy notch sample needs to be placed on the clamp support with a
clamp. The sample clamp has a sample alignment function. After the sample is placed, shut the sliding
door.
★ Note: Both sides of the sample should be close to the clamps and support. When the clamp is loosened,
the position of the sample should not change.
Do not use your hands to place the sample during testing

P Output amplitude ranging from the Temperature over-shoot endpoint after the switched
temperature difference and Temperature I
I The second switched temperature difference value next to the P value output. Take -
100 ℃ for example, when value I is set to 0.3, if temperature drops to -99.7 ℃ , the
system will stop outputting, after which the value will be 0; Value I is no more than 2.
D Output amplitude of temperature rise segment when temperature is below the set value.
SC Parameter The correction of temperature deviation, which is used to correct deviation between
instrument-measured temperature and surface-displayed temperature.
Switch Switch temperature difference is set to inhibit temperature overshoot. Once the
Temperature temperature drops to set temperature + switch temperature difference, the system will
Difference stop cooling until the overheat inertia ends. Take -100 ℃ for example, the switched
temperature difference is 7; The system cools down with 100% output=rate; so when it
reaches -93 ℃ (100+7=-93),system will stop cooling, in which case the output is 0,
until the temperature stops declining.
Test Running
When samples are placed on the holder, you can perform sample loading, temperature setting, sample
transmission impact other than regular operations on mainframe control surface.
Actual Temp.: This value is the current temperature in the cooling chamber;
Set Temp.: Tap on the blank and enter test temperature required. When you set the temperature for the first
time, you need to enter Temp. Control surface and tap Run to run the cooling system. After the cooling
system starts running, resetting the temperature will directly run the cooling system to set temperature;
Thermal Insulation Time: The duration for which cooling chamber reaches the set temperature (20
minutes is recommended for standard storage of sample in the cooling chamber);
Sample Loading: Tap this icon and equipment will load samples on the holder to the cooling chamber.
When there is no samples or with 30 loaded samples, system will automatically stop loading.
Sample Transmission Impact: Tap this icon to transmit the samples in the cooling chamber to the anvil
block and perform impact operation.
Stop: Tap this icon and stop Sample Loading operation;
★ NOTE: Duration for thermal insulation will be reset when sample loading operation is performed. To
lessen the influence of sample loading to test temperature of the test, make sure to reload samples to the
cooling chamber after the sample impact is completed.
★ NOTE: When performing the low-temperature test, make sure to store the sample under pre-set
temperature for appropriate duration before the impact test is performed.
Commissioning Status
Rotate commissioning status selection switch key on the control panel to select commissioning status of the
equipment.
The equipment is under commissioning status when the switch key is turned to horizontal position.
A password window will pop up in the touch screen. Tap the blank and enter password 3499 to enter the
commissioning surface. Under commissioning status, the protective apparatus on the tester can be opened
for maintenance and commissioning. The tester can only collect and release the pendulum, other operations
will be invalid. Under commissioning status, the tester will not brake when the protective apparatus is
opened, and the pendulum is free to swing. When the pendulum is in hung position, make sure to stretch the
safety pin manually. Under commissioning status, a commissioning status icon will display on the bottom
the the touch screen, as shown below:
★NOTE: ONLY qualified and trained personnel are allowed to use commission status, which is mainly for
the purpose of mounting commissioning support, pendulum installation and tester inspection. When the
tester is under inspection and commission status, make sure to pull out the key and keep it safe and secure.

Overview
The testing equipment loses power when impacting, including energy loss P due to pointer friction, as well
as the energy loss P' due to bearing friction and air resistance. In order to test the performance, it is
necessary to check the tester to calculate the energy loss.
When equipped with automatic sample transmission option, it is necessary to calibrate the temperature
sensor regularly to ensure the accuracy of testing temperature.
In the System Parameter interface, you can perform free pendulum energy loss calculation and setting of energy
loss compensation, pendulum power, second collecting pendulum impulsion and gravity acceleration.
Tap to set the free pendulum impact times in the blank, then press Impact. The system will automatically
calculate the value of free pendulum energy loss when it stops swinging.
Energy loss due to bearing friction and air resistance in the half cycle: dial the pointer to a place unreachable by
the pendulum. Let the pendulum complete 10 half cycles, and record the energy E when it completes the 11th
half cycle(when pointer reads energy, you need to adjust the pointer to 5% full scale of the dial when it enters the
6th cycle). Formula of calculating the energy loss due to bearing friction and air resistance:p = E/10
When not using the pointer, p indicates the energy loss, the relative error of energy loss during free oscillation of
the pendulum shall be no more than 0.5% of the maximum impact energy of the pendulum.
After taking the pendulum, set the pointer to the maximum energy dial energy level. Press Start, and the
equipment will begin to test the energy loss caused by pointer friction. After the equipment completes the impact,
record the absorbed energy. Do not set the pointer. The equipment will perform a second impact and record the
energy absorbed. The difference between the two will be the energy loss caused by pointer friction. As shown by
the prompt in the following image, perform the action four times and average the data and record the data.
Energy loss due to pointer friction: set the pointer to Max. Energy on the Dial. Do not place samples on the
bearing. Perform the impact, and record the energy value E1 indicated by the pointer, then perform test again.
Record energy E2. Calculate the energy loss P caused by pointer friction during the ascending of pendulum with
the following formula: p=E1-E2. Repeat the steps four times and record the P value of each step. The average
value is the energy loss of the system pointer. Energy value is the Reset Difference, the maximum allowance
value of which shall be 0.1% of the maximum energy of the pendulum.
p+ p' indicates the energy loss, the relative error of energy loss during free oscillation of the pendulum shall be no
more than 0.5% of the maximum impact energy of the pendulum (P' is energy loss of the free pendulum).
Press the icon, and loosen the locking bolt, remove parts such as the shield, insulating layer, cover plate etc.
When calibrating temperature, thread the calibrated temperature sensor into the cooling room through the sample
holder opening, and stick a tape in the middle of the sample passage in the cooling chamber, then fasten the parts
(such as the shield) and start the temperature calibration.
Before tightening the cooling chamber, do wipe off the liquids inside the cooling chamber, then fasten the
parts(such as the shield).
Cooling Chamber
★ Notice: DO NOT open the cooling chamber at low temperature condition. Always open the cooling
chamber when the internal temperature rises to room temperature.
