Worksheet #4

a) For the floor plan below.

Label the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and state their function.

1 – Wall Lamp – to illuminate room.

2 – Socket Outlet / Receptacle Outlet – to connect current using appliances

to the subcircuit via plug and pin contact.

3 – Fluorescent Lamp – to illuminate room.

4 – 2-Way Switch / SPDT Switch / 3-Pole Switch – control the load from 2

different locations.

5 – Meter base - measure the energy consumption

1-Way Switch / SPST Switch / 2-Pole Switch – control the load from 1

location.
Distribution Panel / Panel Box – houses all the circuit breakers for the

various subcircuits.

Ceiling Lamp – to illuminate room

Earthing Arrangement – to provide a ground loop in the electrical installation

to run off excessive current from metal parts.

b) What is the purpose of testing an installation before connecting it to the electrical

grid?

The purpose of testing an electrical installation is to detect faults before

dangerous situations arise.

c) State the different tests done on an electrical installation at the inspection stage.
a. Insulation Resistance Test (resistance value must be >60 MΩ)

b. Grounding Test

c. Polarity Test

d. Continuity Test

e. Visual Inspection of Workmanship

d) With the aid of a diagram, outline the steps to be carried while performing an
insulation resistance test

1. Remove all lamps and disconnect all appliances

2. Put on all switch and circuit breakers

3. Place Megger probes between live wire and earth lug. And test for

resistance value. (Your resistance value must be greater than

60MΩ)
Another Method to do Insulation Resistance Test
1. Turn off Main Circuit Breaker

2. Place Megger probes between phase conductor and Neutral. Ring Megger and

get resistance Value. (Resistance value must be more than 60MΩ

e) With the aid of a diagram, outline the steps to be carried out while perform the
polarity test

1. Turn Off Main Circuit Breaker

2. Remove all lamps and disconnect all appliances

3. Place Megger probes between live wire from circuit breaker and short pin on

socket outlet / center contact in lamp holder / common terminal in switch.

4. Test for resistance value must now be less than 1MΩ

f) With the aid of a diagram, outline the steps to be carried out when performing the
continuity test

a. Turn selector switch on tester to the continuity mode

b. Place lamp in lamp holder
c. Connect black tester probe to neutral wire (blue or grey) and red
tester probe to live wire (brown)
d. Turn on switch and if the tester beeps, then continuity is in the
circuit
e. Turn off switch to ensure that the tester stop beeps this means that
there is no continuity in circuit.
g) Explain the steps in joining two pieces of wire through the soldering process
a. Allow soldering iron to heat up

b. Remove about 1cm of insulation from both ends of wire.

c. Create the joint using both wires

d. Apply a little solder to the tip of soldering iron and wipe with a damp

or wet cloth.

e. Place the soldering iron on joint and heat it evenly

f. Place solder next to soldering iron on heated joint and allow to melt

and spread evenly.

g. Clean tip of soldering iron when finished.
