OBJECTIVE: Performance Test on Four Stroke Multi Cylinder Petrol Engine.

.
SPECIFICATIONS
1. Engine : Four stroke four cylinder water cooled petrol engine
2. Engine type: 4 cylinder
3. Bore: 87.5 mm, stroke 110 mm, Displacement : 1000 CC
4. Compression ratio 8:16:1
5. Speed 3200-6000 RPM
6. Valve gear : 4 per cylinder
7. Rope Brake Dynamometer: Two spring balances -.
8. Diameter of Brake Drum = 0.205 m. Radius of Brake Drum = 0.1225 m.
9. Measurements :
A) Burette for fuel consumption measurement.
B) Orificemeter, fitted to air inlet tank with water manometer for air intake measurement.
C) Multichannel Digital Temperature Indicator for temperatures at various points.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
1. Fill-up sufficient petrol in petrol tank.
2. Fill-up water in manometer up to half of the manometer height.
3. Start the water supply and see that water is flowing through engine jacket
4. There should be no load on engine.
5. Start the engine by using the ‘Self’ starter.
6. As the engine pickups the speed, apply load on engine and note the reading on the
spring balance.
7. Note down the speed and manometer difference.
8. Note down Manometer Reading.
9. Note down jacket cooling water
10. Repeat the experiment for different loads and complete the observation table.

OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION

Diameter of drum D: 200 mm

Diameter of rope: 20 mm
Radius Re = D+d/2 = .205+.040/2 = 0.1225 m
Orifice diameter= 20 mm

ENGINE PERFORMANCE:

1. BRAKE POWER

2πN T
BP = -------- = kW
60000

Where N=rpm, T=Torque

T = W x g x (D+d)/2 = Nm

2. Fuel consumption per hours

Xcc x density of fuel x 3600
mf = ---------------------------------- kg/h
t x 10³
Where,
X = burette reading
Density of petrol = 0.713
t = time taken in seconds.

3. Brake thermal efficiency

4

BP X 3600
η = ----------------------- …..%
mf X CV

Calorific value of petrol (CV) = 45000

PRECAUTIONS
1. Before starting the engine, oil level in sump and jacket cooling water supply must be

checked.

2. Never stop the engine on load and never use decompression lever for stopping.

3. Do not tamper with any of engine settings, like governor etc.

SAMPLE CALCULATION:
1. Brake power

2x3.14x1335x6
BP = --------------------- = 0.84 kW
60000

Where N=rpm, T=Torque

T = 5 x 9.81 x 0.1225 = 6.0 Nm

2. Fuel consumption per hours

10 x 0.730 x 3600
mf = ------------------------= 0.87 kg/h
³
30 x 10 .

Where,
X = burette reading
Density of petrol = 0.713
t = time taken in seconds.

3. Brake thermal efficiency

0.84 X 3600
η = ----------------------- = 0.077= 7.7%
0.87X 45000
