DETAILS
"Attendance and participation" means that you come to every class alert, with the
readings done, and prepared to ask questions. If no one comes forward with questions, I
may call upon you to pose a question to the class. A good question is clearly focused and
moves the discussion forward. You can also demonstrate preparedness by bringing in a
website URL and being able to explain why it's relevant to the day's readings.

"Exposition" means that you are to put forth (ex – posit) Foucault's ideas, in your own
words, that is, without paraphrase, as clearly and carefully as possible. You will be
responsible for organizing and explaining a key term or concept or argument in
Foucault's work relevant to our topic. Organization and clarity are also the criteria I'll use
in grading the examinations.

A "response portfolio" is a collection of 150 word abstracts (concrete summaries) of

another person's presentation, plus a question to the presenter. Do one for each of the
other students. Hand in a hard copy to me, and email a copy to each presenter.
For the term papers, prior to the rough draft, you will have to hand in a series of
assignments, as noted on the schedule: (1) a topic statement; (2) an annotated
bibliography; (3) an outline; and (4) a thesis statement (if applicable). These will be
graded on a check / check-plus / check-minus system. That means that if you get a check-
minus you will have to redo the exercise before moving on to the next step.

KEY to schedule: All works are by Foucault unless otherwise noted
