So, for today we are going to discuss about Geographic


Coordinate System.

Which is essential in locating places on Earth.


We can locate places on Earth using the Geographic
Coordinate System.

COORDINATE SYSTEM
Coordinate system is a two-dimensional
number line that helps plot the location of a certain
area on Earth.

Geographic Coordinate
system/Terrestrial Coordinate system is the
system use to locate places on Earth.

Latitude is the distance from the equator. It
represents the north or the south position
of a place on earth.

 Longitude or meridian is the distance


from the prime meridian. It represents the
east or the west position of a place on
Earth

Equator is an imaginary horizontal line on


Earth’s surface that divides the planet
into two hemispheres: northern and the
southern hemisphere. It is also known as
the 0° latitude.

 Prime meridian or Greenwich meridian


is an imaginary vertical line that divides
Earth into east and west. It is also known
as the 0° longitude.

The line opposite the prime meridian, which


coincides with 180˚, is sometimes called the
antimeridian. It also coincides with portions of the
International Date Line (IDL), where the new day
starts.

Grid Mapping is the method of using latitude and


longitude to determine the location of the place

Absolute location tells where a person lives,

system.
(In giving the absolute location, the latitude
comes first before the longitude – example
5.13˚N, 119˚E )

Point 1 (60˚N, 15˚W )
Directions: Give the absolute location of the different
points. Point 2 (45˚N, 15˚E )

Example :( absolute location) Point 3 (30˚N, 45˚E)


Point 1 is located at 60˚N, 15˚W.
Point 4 (15˚N, 75W )

Point 5 (15˚N, 15˚W )

Point 6 (8˚N, 15˚E )

Point 7 (30˚S, 45˚W )

Point 8 (45˚S, 50˚W )

Point 9 (45˚S, 30˚E )
