Passage 2
In most parts of the United States, Friday night is a big supermarket night, probably
because Friday is a pay day in many factories and busonesses. Most housewives also
do their weekend shopping on either Friday or Saturday, although supermarkets in
many sections are now open on Saturday as well.
In almost all supermarkets there are shopping carts with a special space to set the
baby. In the early days, before there were carts it was noticed that as soon as a woman
shopper had her arms full of goods the stopped buying. Thus, carts were introduced.
Later a space for the baby was provided in the cart because it was observed with the
baby sitting comfortably in the cart the mother felt need to hurry throught the store
and consequently bought more.
Statistics show that the average American housewife goes to the supermarket twice a
week. On the average she spends from one hour to two hours there each week.

Passage 1
I get a lot of letters at this time of year from people complaining that they have a
could which won’t go away. There are so many different stories about how to prevent
or cure a cold. It’s often different to know what to do. Although colds are rarely
dangerous, except for people who are already weak, such as the elderly or young
babies. They are always uncomfortable and usually most unpleasant. Of course you
can buy lots of medicines which will help to make your cold less unpleasant, but you
must remember that nothing can actually cure a cold or make it go away faster.
Another thing is that any medicine which is strong enough to make you feel better
could be dangerous. If you are already taking drugs for some other illness so always
check with your chemist or doctor to see whether they are all right for you. And
remember they might make you sleepy-please don’t try to drive if they do! Lastly, as
far as avoiding colds is concerned, whatever you may be told about magic foods or
drinks, the best answer is to keep strong or healthy – you’ll have less chance of
catching a cold, and if you do, it shouldn’t be so bad

PART III. READING COMPREHENSION
Read the two following passages carefully and choose the best for each question.
Mark the letter A, B, C or D on your Answer sheet
Passage 1
Crows are probably the most frequently met and easily identifiable members of the
native fauna of the US. The great number of tales, legends, and myths about these
birds indicates that people have been exceptionally interested in them for a long time.
On the other hand, when it comes to substantive-particularly behavioral-information,
crows are less well-known than many comparably common species and for that
matter, not a few quite uncommon ones: the endangered California condor, to cite one
obvious example. There are practical reasons for this
Crows are notoriously poor and aggravating subjects for field research. Keen
observers and quick learners, they are astute about the intentions of other creatures,
including researchers, and adept at avoiding them. Because they are so numerous,
active, and monochromatic, it is difficult to distinguish one crow from another.
Bands, radio transmitters, or other identifying devices can be attached to them, but
this of course requires catching live crows, who are among the wariest and most
untrappable of birds
Technical difficulties aside, crow research is daunting because the ways of these birds
are so complex and various. As preeminent generalists, members of this species
ingeniously exploit a great range of habitats and resources, and they can quickly
adjust to changes in their circumstances. Being so educable, individual birds have
markedly different interests inclinations, strategies and scams. For example, one pet
crow learned how to let a dog out of its kennel by pulling the pin on the door. When
the dog escaped, the bird went into the kennel and ate its food
41. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. The ways in which crows differ from other common birds
B. The myths and legends about crows
C. The characteristics that make crows difficult to study
D. The existing methods for investigating crow behavior
42. According to the first paragraph, what evidence is there that crows have interested
people for a long time ?
A. The large number of stories about crows
B. The frequency with which crows are sighted
C. The amount of research that has been conducted on crows
D. The ease with which crows are identified
43. In line 5, the author mentions the endangered California condor as an example of
a species that is ____________
A. smaller than the crow
B. easily identifiable
C. featured in legends
D. very rare
44. According to the second paragraph, crows are poor subjects for field research for
all of the following reasons EXPECT
A. They can successfully avoid observers
B. They are hard to distinguish from one another
C. They can be quite aggressive
D. They are difficult to catch
45. In the second paragraph, the author implies that using radio transmitters would
allow a researcher who studies crows to _____________
A. identify individual crows
B. follow flocks of crows over long distances
C. record the times when crows are more active
D. help crows that become sick or injured
Passage 2
Federal Express is a company that specializes in rapid overnight delivery of high-
priority packages. The first company of its type, Federal Express was founded by the
youthful Fred Smith in 1971, when he was only 28 years old. Smith has actually
developed the idea for the rapid delivery service in a term paper for an economics
class when he was a student at Yale University. The term paper reputedly received a
less-than-stellar grade because of the infeasibility of the project that Smith had
outlined. The model that Smith purposed had never been tried; it was a model that
was efficient to operate but at the same time was very difficult to institute.
Smith achieved efficiency in his model by designing a system that was separate from
the passenger system and could, therefore, focus on how to deliver packages most
efficiently. His strategy was to own his own planes so that he could create his own
schedules and to ship all packages through the hub city of Memphis, a set-up which
resembles the spokes in the wheel of a bicycle. With this combination of his own
planes and hub set-up. He could get packages anywhere in the United States
overnight
What made Smith’s idea difficult to institute was the fact that the entire system had to
be created before the company could begin operations. He needed a fleet of aircraft to
collect packages from airports; he needed facilities and trained staff all in place to
handle the operation. Smith had a $4 million inheritance from his father, and he
managed to raise an additional $91 million dollars from venture capitalists to get the
company operating
When Federal Express began service in 1973 in 25 cities, the company was not an
immediate success, but success did come within a relatively short period of time. The
company lost $29 million in the first 26 months of operations. However, the tide was
to turn relatively quickly. By late 1976, Federal Express was carrying and average of
19,000 packages per night and had made a profit of 3,6 million

B. It was written by a student of Smith’s

48. What was a key idea of Smith’s?
A. That he should focus on passenger service
B. That package delivery should be separate from passenger service
C. That packages could be delivered on other companies’ planes

49. It can be inferred from the passage that Smith selected Memphis as his hub city
because it ________________
A. was near the middle of the country
B. had a large number of passenger aircraft
C. already had a large package delivery service
D. was a favorite passenger airport
50. It is NOT mentioned in the passage that, in order to set up his company, Smith

Read the two following passages carefully and choose the best answer for each
question. Mark the letter A, B, C or D on your Answer sheet
The Sun today is a yellow dwarf star. It is fueled by thermonuclear reactions near its
center that convert hydrogen to helium. The Sun has existed in its present state for
about four billion six hundred million years and its thousands of times larger than the
Earth
By studying other stars, astronomers can predict what the rest of the Sun’s life will be
like. About five billion years from now, the core of the Sun will shrink and become
hotter. The surface temperature will fall. The higher temperature of the center will
increase the rate of thermonuclear reactions. The outer regions of the Sun will expand
approximately 35 million miles, about the distance to Mercury, which is the closet
planet to the Sun. The Sun will then be a red giant star. Temperatures on the Earth
will become too high for life to exist
Once the Sun had used up its thermonuclear energy as a red giant, it will begin to
shrink. After it shrinks to the size of the Earth, it will become a white dwarf star. The
Sun may throw off huge amounts of gases in violent eruptions called nova explosions
as it changes from a red giant to a white dwarf
After billions of years as a white dwarf, the Sun will have used up all its fuel and will
have lost its heat. Such a star is called a black dwarf. After the Sun has become a
black dwarf, the Earth will be dark and cold. If any atmosphere remains therem it will
have frozen over the Earth’s surface

A. Its surface will be enveloped in the expanding surface of the sun
B. It will become too hot for life to exist
C. Its central part will grow smaller and hotter
D. Its core will cool off and use less fuel
43. When the Sun becomes a red giant, what will the atmosphere be like on the Earth?
A. It will be enveloped in the expanding surface of the sun
B. It will become too hot for life to exist
C. It will be almost destroyed by nova explosions
D. It will freeze and become solid

Passage 2
On July 1, 1859, four men abundantly supplied with provisions, started on a trip by
balloon from St Louis to New York. At 7:30, in the presence of thousands of

speed it ascended to the height of two miles. Taking an easterly direction, it passed in
the course of the night much of the next day, over Lake Erie and Niagara Falls. As it

growing all around the world. In the years since we began I have learned a lot. Much
of what I have learned will be found in this book, for I believe that we, as a company,
have something worth saying about how to run a successful business without giving
up what we really believe in
It’s not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life. The message is that to
succeed in business you have to be different. Business can be fun, a business can be
run with love and it can do good. In business, as in life, I need to enjoy myself, to
have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected. I have always wanted
the people who work for “The Body Shop” to feel the same way
Now this book sends these ideas of mine out into the world, makes them public. I’d
like to think there are no limits to our “family”, no limits to what can be done. I find
that an exciting though. I hope you do, too
