Question 1 [47 marks]

Three steel pipes, having diameters of 100 mm, 80 mm, and 60 mm, respectively,
each 152 m long, are connected in series. The 100 mm pipe leads from a reservoir
(flush entrance), and the 60 mm pipe discharge into the air at a point 3.5 m below the
water surface in the reservoir. Assuming all changes in section to be abrupt.
1.1 Determine the velocity (V2 ) for 60 mm pipe, assume coefficient of friction is f =
0.016 for each pipe. (25)
1.2 Assume V2 = 1.1 m/s, determine the total system losses and the rate of discharge
of water. The kinematic viscosity is 1.21(10)-5 m2 /s. (22)
Use the provided Moody diagram to determine the frictional coefficients.

Question 2 [8 marks]

2.1 A vane of turning angle (180° - 𝜃𝜃) is mounted on a water tank, as depicted in Figure
Q2.1. It is struck by a 75 mm diameter, 1.4 m/s water jet, which turns and falls off into
the water tank without spilling. What is the force F required to hold the water tank
stationery if 𝜃𝜃 = 90°? (5)

Figure Q 2.1

2.2 A pump in a water tank directs a water jet at 2.5 m/s and 0.15 m3/s against a vane
as depicted in Figure Q2.2. Determine the force F to hold the cart stationary if the jet
follows path A. (3)
