Civic Education can be defined as a social science which studies the way in which
the rights, duties, privileges and obligations of people are protected in the society
(environment).It is also the study of governance as its affect the citizens.

Civic Education has its roots in Citizenship Education, in short the subject is
coined from Citizenship Education. It teaches and enlightens the people or citizens
about the right values, right attitude and behaviour that are acceptable to the
society where they live.

The Aims and Objectives of Civic Education

1. To promote the understanding of the inter-relationship between two people,


the government and the society.
2. Civic Education inculcate in students their duties and obligations to the
society
3. To teach the students the right attitudes and values of their society.
4. To inculcate in the students such desirable qualities as discipline, respect,
obedience, patriotism, justice and a sense of nationalism.
5. To teach the students the values of their society as well as encouraging the
spirit of co-operation and friendship at all times.

The Importance of Civic Education

1. Civic Education helps in so many ways to promote peaceful co-existence


among people of different ethnic groups.
2. The study Civic Education will go a long way to enhance individual growth
as well as promoting national integration.
3. It is a tool for sensitization and awareness.
4. It facilitates the possibility of living in peace and harmony.
5. Civic Education inculcates into citizens the consciousness of fundamental
human rights.

MEANING OF VALUES

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

CONTENT

Values can be defined as the degree of quality or worth of thing. It can also be
defined as laid down rules or standard that guides an individual’s interactions with
people. Such standards are highly appreciated by people in the society because
they make society what it should be e.g. peaceful, progressive etc. Values therefore
hold attraction for us and we cherish to possess them.
The acceptable societal values include: - integrity, courage, loyalty,
faithfulness, truthfulness etc.

The Types of Values

a. Discipline: It is the ability of an individual to control his or her own behaviours.


b. Honesty: It is the ability of being truthful and straight forward at all times.
c. Selflessness: It is the ability to show more interest in the welfare of other
people.
d. Courage: This is ability to face difficulty, danger or pain without fear.
e. Integrity: It is the ability to stand and stick to sound morals and principle at all
times.
f. Sincerity: It is the ability to be open minded and to have clear mind towards
issue.
g. Co-operation: Ability to work with other people to achieve a common goal.
h. Fairness: It is the ability of been considerate and to avoid cheating.
i. Justice: It is the ability of being just, righteous and upright.
j. Contentment: It is a means of being happy and satisfied with what one has.

The Importance of Values


Values enable us to know the expectations of our society.
It helps to guide our behaviours towards one another.
Good values enable us to set goals for ourselves; it acts as a standard of conduct
which will guide us to achieve our objective in life.
It also helps us to have a good and positive influence on others
Value helps us in making the right decision.
Value brings a sense of fulfilment and happiness.
It enhances growth and development.
Values help us to uphold our integrity.
Values guide us in decision making.
They control our behavior in the society.
They promote good relationship in the society.
Our understanding and knowledge of our personal and societal values ensure
peace, harmony, progress and development in the society.

The Levels of Manifestation of Values

The following are ways values can be manifested

1. INDIVIDUAL
 A person with value will be faithful in all situations, will be a law
abiding citizen, and will be loyal to constituted authorities.
 Involvement in community service.
 Individuals can also derive their values from other agents of
socialization like school, peer groups, religious associations, media
and society at large.
 Individuals in African setting get inculcated into societal values
through many ways. For example, values are passed down to younger
generations through folklores, proverbs and societal sanctions.

2. SOCIETY
 Societies are mostly identified by their values, our ways of life and
interaction with people from other societies just like the Yoruba
people of Nigeria value respect so much that a young boy will
prostrate to greet and even in public a young girl too kneels down to
greet elders.
 Society values are derives from the history of people. Their
experience portrays the moral standards they cherish and pass down
from generation to the other.
The Factors That Promote Good Value System

Good values in the society are promoted by the following factors:

1. Consistency: This means the state of always being same in thought, words
and behavior, keeping to the same principles, being regular and not
changing.

2. Trust: this is the ability to have confidence or belief in good qualities of


someone or something. It also means to be dependable and reliable.

3. Tolerance: this refers to the willingness to accept opinions or behaviors of


other people who may not like you. It makes one respect other peoples’
view, culture and religion.
4. Integrity: it is the virtue of being honest and firm in one’s moral principles.
A man of integrity is one who is not corrupt. Such a man will not for the
sake of money or any other advantage do what he knows to be wrong.

5. Fairness: this is an act of treating people equally according to the rule of law.

6. Commitment: this is the quality of being devoted to duty. It is an ability to


concentrate and be result-oriented.

Honesty is the quality of being truthful, sincere and straightforward in one’s


dealings with others. An honest person is one, who always tells the truth and does
not deceive or hide facts. Honesty is the attitude of standing for the truth or telling
the truth at all times.

Attributes of Honesty
The attributes of honesty include the following:

1. Truthfulness: an honest person is always truthful in any situation.

2. Courage: an honest man is a man of courage and boldness.


3. Respect: this is a polite behavior towards somebody or something important.
4. Godliness: honest person fear nobody but God.
5. Reliability: an honest person has the attributes of reliability in him, because
he is dependable. You can always trust and count on him without
disappointment.
6. Commitment: an honest person has a sense of commitment to his duty or
task.

The Benefits of Honesty


The following are some of the benefits of honesty:
1. It helps create and develop peace of mind.
2. Honesty makes it possible for people to be identified in the society
3. It helps people to live in a right way in the society.

DISHONESTY

CONTENT

Dishonesty is the act of being untruthful in words or actions while dealing with
other people or oneself. A dishonest person is a dubious character; he is a cheat, a
deceiver, and a liar. He is fraudulent and capable of doing anything that will
damage the image of the country.

Consequences of Dishonesty

There is always the other side of every coin. There are also negative effects of
dishonesty. Some of the consequences of dishonesty are;

1. Cheating: this is one of the negative effects of dishonesty among the people. It
means to deceive others so as to get what belongs to them or what we do have
in a wrong way.
2. Pilfering: this is the act of stealing things, usually small cheap things.

3. Fraudulent Practices: this is a situation where money or any other important


property is carefully and cleverly obtained from a person or group of persons
without use of force but through some dishonest means e.g. pooling, betting and
doing illegal business transaction popularly known as 419.
4. Examination Malpractice: examination malpractice is one of the dishonest
practices among students in various levels of education. It is the act of cheating
in an examination.

5. Hatred: a dishonest person will hate someone who tells the truth always.

6. Lack of respect and honor: it makes people not to have respect for us because
they cannot rely on us.

Co-operation means working willingly with other people in order to achieve some
common goals. It means joining hands together with other people in the school,
society, church/mosque, community to achieve a set goal. There are several things
which we cannot achieve ourselves alone, we need the help of others first, as they
need our help. Hence the saying “United we stand and divided we fall”. Co-
operation is needed in all fields or human endeavour. In the office, co-operation is
needed between the boss and the workers. The boss must lead very well and
workers must obey their boss.
The Attributes of Co-operation

The following are the attributes of co-operation

1. Sharing: this virtue comes from a heart filled with love and warmth. Where
there is co-operation among people, sharing and exchange of information and
material things become easy and a way of life.

2. Supporting: this is the ability to support people in difficult times as this


enhances co-operation and promote friendships and harmony in the society.
3. Caring: this means showing concerns and interest in the affairs of others and
the society as a whole.
4. Tolerance: tolerance is the quality which makes us allows people to express
their views or do things in their own way though we may not agree with them.
5. Friendship: this is the ability to create and maintain cordial relationship and
mutual understanding with others. Real friendship is based on love and strong
affection.

CONTENT

The following factors promote and enhance co-operation

1. Common goal: A goal is one’s effort or target which the person aims at
achieving. In order to achieve the goal, he has to make effort and work hard
with other people to achieve his set goal. So, if individuals and groups share
same goals they can now cooperate with one another to achieve that which
they desire.
2. Common needs/problem: A need is the absence of something that should
be fulfilled. When people discover that they have common needs and
problems, they will surely co-operate and find solutions to these problems
and devise means of meeting their needs, thereby working together.
3. Mutual understanding: This is having a clear knowledge of the needs of
the people and understanding the reasons for co-operation in order to make
provision to meet the needs.
4. Team spirit: This means working together as one. When people see
themselves as one people with one common goal to achieve, they will work
with their whole heart and work together to achieve that goal.
5. Communication: This means exchanging ideas and passing of information
from one person to another. This is needed as every member of a community
must be carried along by communicating every stage of decision to them.
6. Commitment: To achieve co-operation, everybody must be ready to be
devoted and sacrifice his/her time, money, talent etc. to achieve a common
goal.

Self-reliance means one’s ability to do or decide things by oneself rather than


depending on other people for help. It is the state of being independent.

The Attributes of Self-Reliance

The following are identified as attributes of self-reliance

1. Self-confidence: Without believing in oneself, a self-reliant person cannot


see himself as capable of achieving his goals.
2. Passion for what one is doing: this means having interest in whatever one is
doing not allowing anything to divide one attention.
3. Hard work: a self-reliant person needs to work hard in order to keep up
with his ability to provide his basic needs.
4. Dedication: A self-reliant person does not play with his work. He is serious
and puts in enough time in doing it.
5. Leadership trait: This means the ability to lead people well. That is having
the quality of a good leader.

The Benefits of Self-Reliance

1. A self-reliant person will be able to provide basic needs for himself such as
food, shelter and clothing. Such a person will live a comfortable life.
2. A self-reliant person is seen as a responsible person by other people, not as a
burden to others.
3. A self-reliant person has a sense of fulfillment because he believes that he is
important through his actions and something to offer.
4. A self-reliant person is not easily controlled by others in his decisions,
because he is not dependent on them.
5. A self-reliant person does not suffer from unemployment since he can
engage himself in his vocation.

CONTENT

Talent means natural endowment or a superior ability possessed by an individual


that has to be discovered. A major way of becoming self-reliant either as an
individual or as a nation is the ability to discover your talents and skills.

Some of the Ways of Discovering Your Talents and Skills are:

1. Natural Abilities: Everyone has been endowed by God with one talent or
the other. There are things we can do naturally, you must identify those
things you are good at doing with ease.
2. School: You can discover your talents also by your performances in various
subjects you offer in school. Some students are good at vocational subjects
while others are good at languages and so on. Also through school debating
societies and clubs, the students that have oratory and logical prowess could
be discovered and helped to be play writers, actors/actresses etc.
3. By Reading Books: When we read, it may be so easy to discover our talents
and find ways of developing them.
4. By Asking People: You can discover your talents by asking friends,
teachers, and parents. People close to us at times can know better than
ourselves in terms of skills and talents.

How to Nurture one’s Talent


1. Constant Practice: This is one of the ways of developing your talents that is
to keep doing it every day. It makes you discover how to do it better.
2. Reading Books Relating to Your Skills: This exposes you to other
information you never know about your talent and skill. Through books you
know how to perform the skills better.
3. Go For Training: The fact that you have natural ability for a skill does not
mean you are perfect already. Make yourself available to be trained and this
makes you a guru.
4. Teach Others: When you are teaching others what you know, it helps you
advance in your skills.
