CONTENT
MUSIC is defined as the combination of sound that is pleasant to the ear. They are
represented by alphabet A-G. Music can also be described by the act of combining
sensible, captivating sound.
SOUND is the vibration of air particles or the vibration of two or more objects
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND
Characteristics of sound are as follow -:
1. PITCH-: This can be defined as how high or low a sound is produce
2. INTENSITY-: This is how hard or soft a sound is produced
3. DURATION-: This is how long or short a sound is, in addition it is the level
or length in which a sound is produced
4. TIMBRE-: This can be said to be the qualities of a sound i.e the originality
of sound
TYPES OF SOUND
Sounds are grouped into two, namely-: pleasant and unpleasant sound
1. PLEASANT SOUND-: As the name implies sound that is pleasant or
agreeable to the ears e.g. sound of the piano, songs from the Choir, music
from the orchestra etc.
2. UNPLEASANT SOUND -: These are sound that are not pleasant or

3RD WEEK
PRACTICAL ON PIANO
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
-play a diatonic scale
-differentiate semitones from tones
-play major chords
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:
A piano (Keyboard)
CONTENT
Keyboard refers to an arranged set of keys or notes. Some musical instruments are
known as keyboards because they have such an arrangement of keys. These
instruments are piano, organ (harmonium) and accordion. Others include melodion
clavichord, harpsichord, spinet etc.
The keyboard consists of white and black keys or notes. The white notes or keys are
called ‘natural’. They produce natural sounds. The black keys are found between the
white keys or notes. They derive their names from the white keys immediately before
or after them. The black note after key C is called C sharp (C#). This same key or
note can as well derive its name from the next white key which is D. In this instance,
it is called D flat (D ). Similarly, the black key, between D and E is either called D
sharp (D#) or E flat (E ), and so on.
You can now see that the black keys have more than one name, e.g. C sharp or D
flat, D sharp or E flat, and so on. They serve as sharp and flats of the white keys.
Thus, they are known as enharmonic.
Look at the keyboard below. You will notice that the black notes are arranged in
twos and threes. The three black notes are found between F and B, while those in
twos lie between C and E. this arrangement is regular all through the keyboard begins
with any note and runs serially to the end in alphabetical order.
TONES AND SEMITONES
TONES
From the keyboard, we can see that the keys or notes lie at intervals. An interval is
the distance in pitch between any two notes, e.g. C-D or D-E, etc.
SEMITONES
A semitones is the shortest or smallest distance in pitch between any two keys or
notes. The prefix ‘semi’ means ‘half’. Therefore semitones means half tone.
A semitones can be obtained from a white note and its adjacent or closest black note,
e.g. C and C sharp, etc. there are two natural semitones on the keyboard. They lie
between B-C and E-F:
Note that there are two types of semitones discussed above? First is the one obtained
from two notes bearing same letter-names, e.g. C - C#, D – D#, F - F#, G - G#, A -
A# etc. this type is called ‘chromatic semitone’. The second type is the one obtained
from two different letter-names, such as D# to E, E to F, B to C, and so on. This is
called ‘diatonic semitones’.
TONE:
Look at the keyboard again and observe that a black key lies between C and D, D
and E, etc. thus, from C to D is a whole tone; also from D to E is a whole tone.
A tone consists of two semitones. It refers to a whole tone. On the keyboard, whole
tone are found between C-D, D-E, F-G, G-A and A-B.

A picture of the Great staff
CONTENT:
Sometimes it becomes necessary to make use of both treble and bass staves at the
same time. This is mostly used in writing music for the keyboard, especially in a
closed-score style. To do this, therefore, vertical line is drawn at the beginning of
the staves, and brace or bracket is drawn too, behind the vertical line. Thus, the two
staves are joined, e.g.
When the two staves (Treble and Bass) are joined as above, it is known as GREAT
STAFF or GREAT STAVE. Therefore, Great Staff is a combination of both treble
Staff and bass staff with middle C dividing them. Great Staff consists of eleven
lines and ten spaces.
