CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of study
Literature has been widely known by almost everyone on earth of all ages, from
children or adults. It can be said that literary works have become part of aspects of
human life. Literary works include ideas, opinions, thoughts, passion,
experiences, and one's imagination which are then poured into a written form. The
aim is to tell a beautiful and entertaining story using the basic theories of writing.
Mursal Esten (Esten, 1978: 9) defines that literature is the expression of artistic
and imaginative facts as a manifestation of human life and society in general,
through language as a medium and has a positive effect on human life. Another
understanding of literature according to Ahmad Badrun (1983: 16) Literature is an
artistic activity that uses language and other symbols as a tool to create something
imaginative.
There are many types of literary works in literature. Literary works are
known in two forms, there are fiction and non-fiction. Fiction literary works
include prose, poetry, and drama. While non-fiction literary works include
biographies, autobiographies, essays, and etc. Literary works are mostly
imaginative and creative works.
4
In literature there is also what is called literary criticism, which is a branch
of literature that aims to judge a literary work. In addition, literary criticism also
aims to examine and interpret literary works more widely. H.B. Jassin (1917-
2000) in Tifa Penyair dan Daerahnya (1983) states, literary criticism is an
assessment of the good or bad of a literary result by giving reasons about its
content and form. Abrams in his book The Mirror and The Lamp (1971), put
forward his theory of the universe into literary works. The theory of the universe
is a theory that refers to the universe. In this case, we know four things, the
author, the reader, the shared world, and the text. Abrams divides literary theory
into four: Mimetic Theories, Pragmatic Theories, Expressive Theories, and
Objective Theories. From these theories there is a theory called pragmatic theory,
where the theory places literary works that are oriented to the values of the
usefulness of literary works for readers.
Film is one of the developments of a literary work. A film, also known as
a movie, is a series of moving images displayed on a screen, usually with sound,
that make up a story. Apart from being a means of entertainment and mass
communication, films are also a means of conveying messages, which are
conveyed through moving, colorful, and sound images. Because the film covers
everything so that the audience can easily understand the content of the film.
According to Darji Darmodiharjo (1995) value is the quality or condition
of something that is beneficial to humans, both physically and mentally.
Meanwhile, according to Harrocks, value is something that supports individuals or
social groups to make decisions about what is needed or as something to be
5
achieved. While Theodorson Pelly (1994) defines value as something abstract,
which is used as guidelines and general principles in acting and behaving.
There are many types of values, including Personal values, Family values,
Social-cultural values, Material values, Spiritual or religious values, and Moral
values. Rokeach (1973) reveals that personal values are beliefs that serve as
standards that direct actions and ways of making decisions. According to Richins
and Dawson (1992), material values are the tendency to place possession and
acquisition at the center of one's life, to view ownership as a means to happiness,
and as an indicator of one's own and other's success. Several well-known
dictionaries define family values as moral and ethical principles that are
traditionally upheld and inherited in a family, such as loyalty, honesty, truth, and
faith. in other dictionaries mention family values as values especially of the
traditional or conservative kind which are held to promote the good functioning of
the family and to strengthen the fabric of society. Social values are various
principles, assumptions and beliefs that apply in a society. Koentjaraningrat
(1987:85) suggests that cultural values consist of conceptions that live in the
minds of most people about things that they consider very noble. The value
system that exists in a society is used as an orientation and reference in acting.
Therefore, a person's cultural values influence him in determining the available
alternatives, methods, tools, and manufacturing objectives. Religious values
reflect the beliefs and practices held by a follower of a religion.

overview of the film that will be analyzed. After that the writer will show the
findings and analysis of each finding. In each finding, the author makes a list of
utterances from the movie as evidence that there are values that can be taken from
the film Moana.
2.1. Synopsis of the Movie
Moana is an American 3D computer-animated musical adventure film released in
2016. The film is produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by
Walt Disney Pictures. The film tells the story of Moana, the daughter of the chief
of Motunui village on the Polynesian island. It is said that she was chosen by the
ocean itself to reunite the mystical relic of the goddess Te Fiti. When a plague
strikes her island, Moana sets out to find Maui, the legendary god, in hopes of
recovering the the relic of Te Fiti to save her island and its inhabitants.
2.2 Findings and analysis of values
The findings and analysis of each values are as follow :
A. Personal values
Excerpt 1 :
(17:17)
8
I know everybody on this island
Seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know everybody on this island
Has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I'll be satisfied
If I play along
But the voice inside
Sings a different song
What is wrong with me
Data Analysis :
The stanzas above are the songs of Moana who is looking for her identity.
she wants to follow her heart to fulfill the call of the sea. This proves that
there is a personal value in Moana's character.
Excerpt 2:
(01:20:54)
Who am I?
I am a girl who loves my island
And the girl who loves the sea
It calls me
I am the daughter of the village chief
9
We are descended from voyagers
Who found their way across the world
They call me
I've delivered us to where we are
I have journeyed farther
I am everything I've learned and more
Still it calls me
And the call isn't out there at all
It's inside me
It's like the tide
Always falling and rising
I will carry you here in my heart
You remind me
That come what may
I know the way
I am Moana
Moana : I am Moana of Motunui. Aboard my boat... I will sail across
the sea... and restore the heart of Te Fiti.
Data Analysis :
It is Moana's song and her words where Moana finally finds her true self,
and she knows what she wants, where she is going, and what she is doing,
and will do. This shows the personal value in Moana's character.
10
Excerpt 3 :
(01:16:47)
Maui : My hook is cracked. One more hit, and it's over.
Moana :Maui, you have to restore the heart.
Maui : Without my hook, I am nothing.
Moana : That's not true!
Maui :Without my hook, I am nothing!
Data Analysis :
Maui is having a crisis of confidence. He thinks that he can do nothing
without his magic hook. this is proof of personal value on Maui.
Excerpt 3 :
(01:20:54)
Moana : I'm sorry about your hook.
Maui : Well, hook, no hook... I'm Maui.
Data Analysis
In the conversation that Moana feels sorry for Maui's magic hook was
broken. but Maui did not fell sad, because he had found his true identity.
this shows Maui's personal values.
B. Family values
Excerpt 1 :
(10:38)
11
Tui : This is a sacred place. A place of chiefs. There will
come a time... when you will stand on this peak and place a stone on this
mountain. Like I did. Like my father did. And his father, and every chief
that has ever been. And on that day... when you add your stone... you will
raise this whole island higher. You are the future of our people, Moana.
And they are not out there. They are right here. It's time to be who they
need you to be.
Data Analysis :
The words above are the words of Tui, the village head to his son, Moana,
that he will continue Tui's leadership in the village. this proves the
existence of family values, namely there is a rule that the child must
continue the leadership of the father.
C. Social-Cultural values
Excerpt 1 :
(08:04)
Moana, it's time you knew
The village of Motunui is all you need
The dancers are practicing
They dance to an ancient song
Who needs a new song
This old one's all we need
This tradition is our mission
And there you are
12
There you are
There comes a day
When you're gonna look around
And realize happiness is
Where you are
Consider the coconut
The what
Consider its tree
We use each part of the coconut
It's all we need
We make our nets from the fibers
The water is sweet inside
We use the leaves to build fires
We cook up the meat inside
Consider the coconuts
The trunks and the leaves
The island gives us what we need
Data Analysis :
As said in the synopsis that this film is a musical film, so the quote above
is a song that the heads of the Motunui residents sing with their people. on
the stanzas in bold print proves that the Motunui people have a traditional
culture of singing ancient songs and dancing to them, and they make this a
13
mission. The Motunui people live on an island, and they make ends meet
from the island as well. They use all parts of the coconut tree as food and
utensils. Their jobs are coconut farmers and fishermen.
Excerpt 2 :
(10:38)
Tui : This is a sacred place. A place of chiefs. There will
come a time... when you will stand on this peak and place a stone on this
mountain. Like I did. Like my father did. And his father, and every chief
that has ever been. And on that day... when you add your stone... you will
raise this whole island higher. You are the future of our people, Moana.
And they are not out there. They are right here. It's time to be who they
need you to be.
(11:35)
My home, my people beside me
And when I think of tomorrow
There we are
I'll lead the way
I'll have my people to guide me
We'll build our future together
Where we are
'Cause every path leads ya back to
Where you are
14
Data Analysis :
From the song and the conversation, the leader in the village is hereditary.
Moana's father is the chief of Motunui village, and will be passed on to
daughter, Moana. This proves the existence of cultural values.
Excerpt 3 :
(13:18)
Villager : It's the harvest. This morning, I was husking the
coconuts and...
Moana :Well... we should clear the diseased trees and we
will start a new grove. There.
Villager : Thanks, Moana. She's doing great.
Tui : This suits you.
Fisherman : Chief? There's something you need to see. Our
traps in the east lagoon... they're pulling up less and less fish.
Moana : Then we'll rotate the fishing grounds.
Fisherman : We have. There's no fish.
Moana : Oh. Then we'll fish the far side of the island.
Fisherman : We tried.
Moana : The windward side.
Fisherman : And the leeward side, the shallows, the channel.
We've tried the whole lagoon. They're just gone.
Moana : Have you tried using a different bait?
15
Fisherman : I don't think it's the bait. There's no fish. It seems
like it's getting worse and worse.
Tui : Of course, I understand you have reason for
concern. I will talk to the council.
Data analysis :
Farmers and fishermen reported to the head of the village that their
coconut yields were poor and that fish was very hard to come by. From the
conversation above, it is evident that there is social interaction between
residents and the head of the people. Based on the notion of social value
that has been mentioned in the background, this proves the existence of
social value in the movie.
D. Spiritual or religious values
(00:55)
In the beginning... there was only ocean... until the mother island emerged.
Te Fiti. Her heart held the greatest power ever known. It could create life
itself. And Te Fiti shared it with the world.
Data Analysis :
It was the opening of the film where the grandmother, Tala, is telling a
story about the origin of the island they live on, Motunui to the children.
There it is mentioned that there is a sea goddess who can create life and
16
then share it with the world. this proves the spiritual value that they
believe in gods.
E. Moral values
1) Be brave and try new things
In this film, Moana travels to places she has never been before. she
overcame formidable obstacles, but he succeeded. Therefore, try new
things, don't be afraid to take risks that seem impossible, because all of
that is impossible before we try it. You just have to try without fear of
failure.
2) Failure doesn't mean you lost. Try again.
Moana knew she had to go beyond the reef. As she was sailing, she hit
a big wave and was thrown back onto the shore. In life we meet many
failures, we may rest, cry, but don't stop. try again. If you fail again, try
again until you succeed.
3) Don't stop learning
Moana has an open mind as a learner. She didn't know how to sail so
she said "Teach me to sail". She persisted with her will and forced
Maui to teach her how to sail. Her desire and passion is to become an
expert pathfinder like Maui. In life we have to learn anywhere
anytime. If you don't know something, then ask someone who knows.
Learning knows no age and no matter who we study with, how many
degrees we have, we still have to learn. Be a lifelong learner.
17
4) Find solitude
Gramma Tala sends Moana alone in a cave, to understand their tribal
past and traditions and to guide Moana to find her true self.
In life, sometimes we need to step back from the noises around us,
such as other people's words, other people's demands on us and etc, to
really know the desires of our hearts so that we can make the right
decisions.
