Master's in Mahāyāna Buddhism
Mahayana Concepts of Buddhist Ethics
Semester : 3rd Cr.Hours: 3
Paper: V Teaching Hours : 48
Code : MMB535 Full Marks: 50
Course Description
The course entitled Buddhist Ethics is meant to impart knowledge about the ethics
which is traditionally based on the teachings of all three vehicles taught by Lord Buddha.
The Buddhist ethics as a field of academic study is not new, but in recent years has
experienced a considerable expansion in the world. This can be observed, for instance, in
a universally popular and famous peer review journal named The Journal of Buddhist
Ethics accessible both in print and online with its single objective to promote the study of
Buddhist Ethics. It invites the academic articles by the scholars from all over the world.
So different schools of Buddhism have rich traditions of thought on ethics, though this is
often scattered through a variety of works which also deal with other topics. But here the
course of Buddhist Ethics is designed drawing specially from the Mahāyāna literature to
incorporate all the burning issues that engulf the modern world. It also provides students
with knowledge on the importance of moral values or ethics in human life for leading
peaceful life and also for religious pursuit. Specifically, it has the following objectives.
Course objective
1. It aims at making students understand changing trend in the Buddhist concept
of ethical practice.
2. To provide students with knowledge about the Mahāyāna perspective on
Buddhist Ethics.
3. To impart the students with knowledge of ethical values of Buddhism towards
equality of male and female, social behaviour, environmental ethics and animal
rights and their protection.
