Master the Amharic Fidel:

In the Amharic language there are around 34 Fidel or characters.
Each character represents a consonant-vowel
combination. Each Amharic character encodes both a
consonant sound and a vowel sound together.
In other writing systems like the English alphabet, each letter typically
represents either a consonant or a vowel sound on its own. For
example, the letter 'b' represents only the consonant sound, while
the letter 'a' represents only a vowel sound.

In contrast, the Amharic script uses characters that combine both a
consonant and a vowel into a single symbol. For instance, the
Amharic character 'ሀ' represents the consonant sound 'h' combined
with the vowel sound 'a'. Similarly, 'ለ' represents 'l' + 'a', 'መ'
represents 'm' + 'a', and so on.

But don't be afraid that you won't memorize them because of their
quantity. You will know them because I will show you the way to learn
them easily.

The 7 facts you should to know about Amharic

Fidel:
Knowing these facts will make it easier for you to learn Amharic Fidel.

1. The letters in the first row are all simple letters with
little addition to their bodies. They are pronounced
like “ኧ” or "eh, e".
2. The Amharic letters in the second row except for “ሩ
and ፉ” have a small mark on their right side. This
symbol makes them read as "u". Example: ሁ Hu፣ ሉ
Lu፣ ሙ Mu
3. All the Amharic letters except "ሪ ri, ዪ yi and ፊ fi"
in the third row have a right-pointing suffix on their
right leg. For example: ሂ hi፣ ሊ Li፣ ሚ, ሲ Si etc. This
suffix makes the Amharic letter read as "i".
4. The letters with two or more legs, such as “ሓ/ ha, ላ
/ la, ሳ/ sa, ባ /ba” in the fourth row, have the
shortest leg on the left. That is why they are
pronounced as "a". You can look at them now.

 5. All the Amharic letters in the fifth row have a ring
on their right leg. This makes them read as "ie". For
example: ሄ Hie, ሌ Lie, ሜ Mie, ሤ, ሴ, Sie
6. But the Amharic Fidels in the sixth row are
consonant letters. So we need to read them like “ህ
H, ል L, ም M, ስ S, ር R”. For example: “ምስር /
MSR, which means “Lentil” and “ስድስት / SDST”
which means “Six”. If we add another vowel
symboles to these Fidels, their shape, sound and
meaning will change. The remaining 6 Fidels are
vowel letters. They change their shape and sound
due to the addition of vowel letters. (አ, ኡ, ኢ, ኣ, ኤ,
ኦ, (a u i a ie o)
7. The letters in the seventh row such as "ሆ / ho, ሎ/
lo, ሮ / ro, ኖ / no" have a ring on the right. Two-
legged letters like "ሶ / so, ቦ / bo, ሾ / sho" have
the shortest leg on the right. And those with one
leg Fidel like ቆ / Qo, ቾ / Cho, ቶ / To have a ring
mark on their head. But they are all pronounced as
"o".

If you understand these facts well, you can learn and

even memorize these Amharic Fidels very easily. Now,
when you read the letters below, read them keeping in
mind the facts that we have seen above. I will tell you
additional facts after you read this table.

alphabet that have the same sound and
meaning but different shapes.

The first letter "አ / A" is the most commonly used. But
the second "ዐ / A" is usually used by Muslims and
Tigres, because it is a throaty sound. Amharic does not
have an alphabet that can be read by throat. And the
Muslims use it to represent the Arabic letter (‫)ع‬.

But the fact that these same Fidels are rarely used by Amharic
speakers does not mean that the Fidels are unnecessary. Because

other ethnic groups like Tigre and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church
and Muslims use them.

4 (four) Fidels added to Amharic Fidel Gebeta:

1. ጵ / p

“ጵ” is a Greek sound, not Amharic. The Fidel was created

to represent the Greek letter "π" and its sound. Example:

Πέτρος = ጴጥሮስ = Peter

Παύλος = ጳውሎስ = Paul

Επίσκοπος = ጳጳስ = Bishop

2. “ኸ / Kh”

The first one is “ኸ / Kh”. This Fidel is not Amharic or Geez,

but it is Tigrigna. People who speak Tigrinya and Arabic
use this alphabet a lot. The Fidel “ኸ / Kh” represents the
Arabic letter “‫ ”خ‬and is widely used by Amharic speaking
Muslims.

The letter "ፕ / P" is not Amharic either. It is an alphabet
created to represent English and Italian letters. For
example, the nouns "Polis, Pasta, or Vite" do not have
other Amharic nouns. That's what we call them in their
original language.

bottom and bottom to top. After that, you will learn some
basic Amharic words. Therefore, do this work well first.
