Goalball is a unique sport because it requires all participants and spectators to

remain completely quiet during game play; players must be able to hear the bells inside the
approaching ball. Furthermore, the sport does not require players to rely on their hand-eye
coordination. Because eyeshades must be worn during play, students will be required to
rely heavily on their auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic senses.

Court Dimension:

Basic Skills:

Blocking - Blocks are typically made from a horizontal lying position with arms and legs
fully extended.

1.Defending player anticipates block while in the ready position

(feet shoulder length apart, knees bent in comfortable crouch,up
on balls of feet, arms held forward at waist height).

2. The hands and arms contact the floor first to cushion the body
as the player prepares for the block.

3. During the block the body is in side-lying position with arms

and legs fully extended and parallel to goal line.

4. Arm position is in front of face with head tilted back to prevent

injury.

2
Throwing - An underhand technique is used to throw a GoalBall. The skill closely
resembles the delivery used in bowling. Once the ball has been successfully blocked, players
have 8 seconds to return the ball to their opponent’s end of the court.

1. Immediately after ball is blocked, player uses

orientation lines to face opponent’s goal line (target).

2. While using an underhand motion, the rolling arm

swings back to waist level.

3. Step toward target with foot opposite rolling hand.

Chest facing target.

4. Rolling arm swings forward as ball is released low and toward target.

5. Ball is released before eight seconds.

Passing –Before a pass is made the passer should call the name of the receiver. To ensure
accurate passes receivers knock on the fl oor to give an audible cue. Passing is an important
skill to learn because a player is not permitted to throw a ball more than two consecutive
times in traditional game play.

1. Player faces and calls the name of the

teammate.

2. Player waits for teammate response

(usually a tap on the floor).

3. Ball is gently tossed toward teammate so that it bounces once causing the bells to sound.

Let’s Practice
Working Out
Directions: Read and perform the drills below. After performing the drills, decide as to
what goalball skill can be developed by performing each drill. Write your answer on the
table below.
The drills below are suggested to develop sport specific skills. Activity modifications
may be necessary to ensure safety and successful experiences for all learners. You may ask
the help of a family or household members when doing the following drills.

Drill 1a
• Player 1 will throw/release the ball low and toward Player 2 in a 10 yard distance.
• With the same distance, Player 2 get hold of the ball and throw it to Player 3
• With the same distance, Player 3 get hold of the ball and throw it to Player 1
• Player will do the drill for thirty (30) times clockwise, and thirty (30) times
counterclockwise in three (2) sets

Drill 1b
Players will execute the same thing (Drill 1) but they will wear blindfold this time and
they will wait for the other player to call on their name before passing the ball.

Drill 2
Using a ball, a player will try to knockdown the cones placed at different distances
with a given time of 2 minutes for every attempt or trial. If cones are not available you may
use plastic bottles.

• A player will attempt to knock down 10 cones without wearing eyeshades/blindfold.

• For the second attempt, the player will try to knock down all the cones blindfolded
but with the help of a guide at the back.
• For the last attempt, the player will try to knock down all the cones blindfolded
without a guide.

Drill 3

A family or household member will stay behind you while you are wearing blindfold.
He/She will give command whether to dive right, on the spot, and left.

Let’s Do More

Blind Side
Directions: Ask household members assistance/participation, then perform the activity
below. Answer the question that follows after the activity. Write your answer on the space
provided after the question.

Note: Official rules are modified into a slightly simpler version in consideration of safety,
participants, equipments, and space. You may opt to make some modification as long as the
necessary skills are not compromised.

Practice without blindfolds

1. Split into teams with equal number of participants. Two teams can play at one time.
We’ll call them the red team and the blue team.
2. The two teams should go into the court and stand by their goals. Everyone else is a
spectator. Spectators must be silent so players can hear the ball.
3. The red team defend first. One player should be on the centre line, and one player
should be on each of the wing lines.
4. One person in the blue team should attack and try to score a goal. They should bowl
the ball, like in ten-pin bowling.
5. The red team should try to stop the ball by blocking it.
6. If the blue team gets the ball completely over the goal line they score a goal. The
person leading the game should give the ball to a member of the red team. If the red
team catches the ball, they should hold on to it.
7. If the red team hits the ball out of play, the person leading the game should give the
ball to a member of the red team.
8. One person in the red team (usually the person who caught or was given the ball)
should repeat step four to try and score, while the blue team repeats step five to stop
the ball going in the goal.
9. Both teams should have three turns—each player should have a turn at attacking
(even if they don’t catch or get given the ball, their teammates can pass it to them so
they can give it a go).

Play the game blindfolded

Note: Help each other to put on blindfolds. Make sure that there will be a family or household
member who will serve as spectator to ensure each player’s safety.

After playing goalball, what do you think are the things to be considered prior to
playing goalball? Justify your answer.
