NARRATIVE REPORT

FOR EMI LOWER SECONDARY SCIENCE TEACHERS

A. INTRODUCTION

“English as a medium of instruction: EMI – a growing global phenomenon” as mentioned by Julie Dearden. With the
rapid growth in English Medium Instruction (EMI) programmes on a global level, EMI has become a worldwide phenomenon
and a growing field of research.
English as a medium of instruction (EMI) is defined as the use of English to teach academic subjects in countries
where the majority of people do not speak English as their first language or mother tongue. The major key driving EMI in
Thailand is due to global competitiveness and the need to meet world challenges. Therefore, the educational response was
to react to external pressures and attempt to find the best institutional structure for its needs. Indeed, the Thai government
effort has made English as the major second language and encouraged more EMI programs in higher education institutions.

OBJECTIVES OF EMI
The instructional objectives of English language teaching:
1. To understand spoken language,
2. To speak the language,
3. To write the language,
4. To read the language. by the oral and written medium." that he should himself be able to speak and write it."

IMPORTANCE OF EMI
EMI is important to produce more competent graduates and laborers who are fully competitive in the ASEAN Economy
Community and wider international market because EMI is considered as a key mechanism to equip university graduates
with professional language skills and competency. English proficiency is seen as playing an important role in economic
development and modernization of the nation.

EMI VENUE AND TIME


EMI was performed every day of the school week. This training was undertaken from May 13, 2024, up to February
2024, summing up forty learning hours at Assumption College Rayong.

B. COMPANY PROFILE

SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
Assumption College Rayong is located at 131 Village No. 2, Sukhumvit Road, Noen Phra Subdistrict, Mueang Rayong
District, Rayong Province 21000. “Assumption” comes from the English language. ASSUMPTION has a Christian meaning: It is
to be honored in heaven of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. It is a word of praise and honor to Her Majesty the Queen
who is the patron of the school. ACR was founded by the Brothers of the Order of St. Gabriel of Thailand, with Brother
Simeon Puerto being the first licensee.

PHILOSOPHY
1. Life's purpose is knowing the truth, and reaching the highest Dhamma as the source of life.
2. Every human being must work, perseverance, and perseverance as the path to success as the school's aspiration is
LABOR OMNIA VINCIT.

WEEK 1 (June 15, 17 – 22, 2024)
Saturday (June 8)
This is the first day of class for the EMI primary science teachers this AY 2024. One teacher is not attending because she will
be going to India and is attending Mr. Raymund’s class.
EMI Science Lower secondary teachers:

4. Ms. Pornthip Sungket

A PowerPoint presentation was shown to them about the simple definition of EMI and how it came about in Thailand.
The relationship between the core curriculum and the school curriculum was also presented and how the BEC is integrated
into the core curriculum of the school.
Some concepts about Thai learners as second language learners were also discussed. E.g.: identifying some concepts
whether they are myths or reality here in Thailand.
CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning as an approach and method of teaching for science teachers was also
reviewed. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a dual-focused educational approach in which an additional

language is used for the learning and teaching of both content and languages. This is an ideal method of teaching EMI to
science subjects which is suggested to be used in the classroom.
