Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer:

The stars are beautiful in the night sky. They are far away, farther away than most people
can imagine. Even though they are light years away, they can still light up the sky. For thousands
of years, people have been interested in stars. They have been used as fortunetellers, calendars,
and maps. Travelers often used the stars to help them find their way.
Before there was electricity, the stars and moon were the brightest things in the night sky.
People spent hours staring up and wondering what the little, twinkling lights were. Back then,
the stars were easier to see because there weren’t any other lights at night. Not many ancient
people realized that the sun was a star. The sun and moon were thought of as father and mother
of Earth in some ancient cultures. The stars were thought of as lesser gods or the souls of
people who had died.
Greek philosophers, 2,300 years ago, started to try and unravel the mystery. A man named
Anaxagoras thought that the sun was a giant ball of metal burning in the center of our universe.
He was thrown in jail and sentenced to death because this idea (conflicted with people’s religious
beliefs.
Even so, people did not stop trying to understand the sun. Scientists still study it today.
Large telescopes take pictures of the sun almost every day as we try and learn more about it.

Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer:
There are about 250 kinds of turtles. Most turtles live near fresh water. They spend part
of their time swimming in the water and part of it on land. Not all turtles live this way, though.
Land turtles, also known as tortoises, do not swim at all. Sea turtles live nearly their whole lives
in salt water.
Tortoises are slow and steady. They have short, thick back legs. Their flat front legs are
built like shovels and are very good for digging. Tortoises have high, rounded shells, too. Many
tortoises can pull their heads, legs, and tails inside their shells. They quickly do so at any sign of
danger. Their strong shells protect them from animals that might want to eat them.
Turtles have no teeth. Instead they have strong beaks that can cut food like a pair of
scissors. Unlike most other turtles, tortoises eat only plants. Tortoises hatch from eggs. The
female tortoise digs a hole, lays some eggs, and covers them with dirt. When the baby tortoises
hatch, they must dig their way out of the hole. They never know their mother. The largest
tortoises can grow to four feet long. They may weigh up to 600 pounds.
Sea Turtles are like tortoises, they lay their eggs on land. The female turtle comes out of
the ocean onto the beach. She digs a hole, lays her eggs, and returns to the sea. When the baby
turtles hatch, they head straight for the water. The trip across the beach can be dangerous!
Many animals come to the beach to eat the little turtles as they crawl toward the water. After
they reach the water, male sea turtles never return to land. Females return only to lay their
eggs. Sea turtles can swim very fast.
Their front legs are built like paddles. They use them like wings to “fly” through the water.
Although most turtles can pull their heads and legs inside their shells, sea turtles cannot. The
green sea turtle eats only plants. Other sea turtles eat both plants and animals. The largest of all
sea turtles is the leatherback. It can weigh over 1,000 pounds. Its favorite food is jelly fish.

Choose the correct answer from a , b, c or d:

1. How are tortoises and sea turtles alike?
a - Both eat animals.
b - Both dig holes for their eggs.
c - Both move slowly.
d - Both have front legs that are good for digging.
2. How is the tortoise different from the sea turtle?

Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer:
As a paleontologist, James Kirkland has examined thousands of different dinosaur bones.
But even he wasn’t prepared for what he saw when he was called to investigate some new fossils
found near Salt Lake City, Utah. A fossil bed there held the bones of two never-before-seen
species of Ankylosaur. The discovery is changing scientists’ ideas about the history of dinosaurs
in America.
Both of the newly discovered creatures belong to a group of plant-eating dinosaurs called
Ankylosaur, which means “fused lizards”. The name comes from the heavy armor-like plates
attached or fused to their heads. Some grew more than 30 feet long.
“These two dinosaurs were very similar animals in many respects,” says Kirkland “one is an
Ankylosaurid”. An Ankylosaurid had big armored plates around the head and a long tail with a
heavy club at the end. It would swing the club tail to fight bigger animals, like the Tyrannosaurus
Rex. The other new species, the Nodosaurid, was also well armed. “It had spikes on its shoulders
that it used to ram larger creatures,” says Kirkland “These dinosaurs were built like tanks.”
Most Ankylosaurs lived 148 million to 64 million years ago, during the last dinosaur era,
known as the Late Cretaceous period. They lived in Asia and apparently crossed over to America
on a land bridge that once connected Asia to what is now Alaska. “Ankylosauria was in a real
hurry to get over here from Asia,” says Kirkland “They were some of the first to get here.”
By studying volcanic ash found near the site, scientists have determined that the
Ankylosaurid bones were 25 million years older than any other known American Ankylosaur. This
means that the land bridge must have existed earlier than scientists had believed.
Paleontologist Kenneth Carpenter says these findings push the date that the land bridge
existed back from 90 million years ago to 110 million years ago. The skull and armor of the
Ankylosaurid and the shoulder blade of the Nodosaurid are being studied by experts at the
College of eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum. Already, they have learned that the head armor
of the Ankylosaurid is not a bunch of plates attached to its head, but an outgrowth of its skull
bones. They are eager to discover more about these armed warriors of a lost world.

Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer:
The human body is like a machine that is moving and working all the time. All machines need
fuel to give them energy. The fuel for the human body is food and most of the energy comes
from two substances in our food, they are carbohydrates and fats. Carbohydrates are found in
food like potatoes, bread, rice, wheat, corn, and sugar. Fats come from food like cheese, butter,
oil and meat.
Energy in food is measured in calories. For example, an apple has about 40 calories, an egg
has about 80, a fresh date has 15, and a tomato has around 12. Carbohydrates and fats have a lot
of calories. For instance, a tin of soft drink, which contains a lot of sugar, has 145, a piece of Arab
bread has 165, and only one spoonful of cooking oil has 120 calories.
You need about 40 calories a day for each kilo that you weigh. So, if you weigh 60 kilos, you
will need about 2400 calories per day. If a person eats more calories than he/she needs, his/her
body stores the extra calories as fat. A person who gets all the calories they need in their meals
but in addition drinks only one tin of soft drink a day may gain five kilos per year.
Unfortunately, food which contains carbohydrates is usually cheaper than other food and it
is often convenient and attractive. All ‘junk food’ contains lots of carbohydrates and fats. If your
diet contains a lot of junk food, you will probably get fat.

Choose the correct answer from a , b, c or d:

1. Which statement is true?
a - Food which contains carbohydrates is the only food useful for the body.
b - Food which contains carbohydrates isn’t expensive and is most liked.
c - Food which contains carbohydrates has fewer calories.
d - Food which contains carbohydrates doesn’t make us fat.
2. How many calories does the person who weighs 50 kilos need a day?
a - 2400 calories. b - 60 calories. c - 40 calories. d - 2000 calories.
3. How many calories do tins of soft drink have?
a - A few. b - A small number. c - Nothing. d - Many.
4. Where does energy for the human body come from?
a - Carbohydrates and fats. c - Soft drinks.
b - Junk food. d - Protein and fast foods.
5. What do potatoes, bread, rice, wheat, corn and sugar contain?
a - Fats. b - Salts. c - Carbohydrates. d - Vitamins.

a - healthy b - unhealthy c - necessary d - poisonous

Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer:

What sort of food are we likely to be eating in the year 2030? Most people, when you ask
them a question like that, either say: “There won’t be any left,” or: “whatever it is, there won’t
be much taste in it.” Of course, there are good reasons for being pessimistic about the world’s
food supplies in the future. Nevertheless, not all experts share the general despondency. For
one thing, although the world’s population is rising fast, food production is keeping pace with
it, even in developing countries. It is therefore argued that the main reason why people are
hungry is not that there is a food shortage but that methods of cultivation are not sufficiently
advanced in some areas and the food is not fairly distributed to all those that need it. Moreover,
in most industrialised countries, one important cause of the trouble is our conservative
preference for meat. After all, we are already in a situation where we feed animals with grain
to produce high-quality beef, even though the grain would feed the human population. By the
time our grandchildren have grown up, it seems likely that many of these problems will have
been resolved. Scientists are already capable of constructing steaks from vegetable ingredients
like soya beans. However skeptical we may be about their claim that they can reproduce
the substance, taste and colour of meat by these means. The fact is that the most common
complaint about such “steaks” is that we will no doubt have discovered a way of including
artificial bones, skin and fat!”

1. According to the passage, using vegetable ingredients is one of the methods to overcome

a - protein b - fats c - vitamins d - calcium

Basel Rashid, who was a famous detective, working for businessmen to protect them and
solve mysteries related to their work, had finished working on a crime in Aswan and was about to
go home on the Spanish Train. When Basel got on the train, he noticed that it was unusually full
for the time of year.
Soon after the train had left Aswan, a wealthy businessman, Mr. Mourad, asked Basel to
protect him because he believed his life was in danger. Although Mourad offered Basel a lot of
money to do this, the detective did not believe the man’s story and refused to help him.
During the night, the train had to stop because of heavy rain. The next morning, Mourad was
found dead: he had been murdered. Had someone got on the train and killed him? Now, Basel
believed Mourad’s story and, together with a doctor, who was also on the train, he started work
on solving the crime. The two men soon discovered that Mourad had a secret identity. He was
not a businessman, but a criminal who was hated by many people.
After examining the train and Mourad’s body, Basel realised that the man had almost
certainly been murdered by one of the 13 people from the same part of the train as Mourad.
This meant that there were 13 suspects. One by one, Basel discovered that these 13 people all
had a good reason to hate Mourad. Together, they had carefully planned what they were going
to do and had all taken part in the murder. This was why the Spanish Train had been so full on
that journey.

Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer:
It is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for a long time as food attracts germs which
produce acid, and acid hurts your teeth. Flossing helps to remove this food. This explains why
flossing helps us to keep our mouths healthy, but some doctors say that flossing can be good
for our hearts. It may seem strange that something you do for your teeth can have an effect on
your heart. Doctors have some ideas about how flossing works to keep your heart healthy. One
idea is that the germs that hurt your teeth can travel into your blood and attack your heart.
Another idea is that when there are too many germs in your mouth, the body tries to fight them,
and the way the body fights these germs may weaken the heart.
Not every doctor agrees about these ideas. Some doctors think that the link between good
flossing habits and good heart health is only a coincidence. A coincidence is the occurrence of
two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance. For example, every time I wash my
car, it rains. This doesn’t mean that when I wash my car, it rains likewise. Some doctors think
that people who have bad flossing may have heart problems, and people who have good flossing
may have healthy hearts. The theory that flossing your teeth helps to keep your heart healthy
might not be true. But every doctor agrees that flossing is a great way to keep your teeth
healthy.
So even if flossing doesn’t help your heart, it is sure to help your teeth.
