For the following questions 25-27, two statements are given – one labelled Assertion
(A) and the other labelled Reason (R).
Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) as given
below:
Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of the assertion (A).
Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of the assertion (A).
(A) is true but (R) is false.
(A) is false but (R) is true.

26. Assertion: Abscisic acid is responsible for the wilting of leaves.

Reason: Abscisic acid is a growth inhibitor.

27. Assertion(A): Olfactory receptors detect smell.

Reason (R): Olfactory receptors are present in the cerebellum.

28. Assertion(A): Phototropism is a directional growth movement.

Reason (R): It occurs due to auxin.

29. Answer sub-questions (a) to (d) on the basis of your understanding of the following
paragraph and the related studied concepts.
The endocrine system is composed of several endocrine glands or ductless glands.
The endocrine system helps in control and coordination through chemical compounds
called hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers secreted in very small amounts
by specialised tissues called ductless glands. They act on target tissues/organs usually
away from their source. Iodine also helps certain glands to produce hormones. In case
iodine is deficient in our diet for a prolonged period of time, we may suffer from
diseases.
(a) Name the gland that needs iodine to produce hormone. Also, name the
hormone produced.
(b) State the name of the disease that is caused due to the deficiency of iodine.

(c) Thyroxin regulates the metabolism of:

Carbohydrates Proteins Fats
(i) ✓ ✓ ✓
(ii) ✓ ✓ ✕
(iii) ✕ ✓ ✕
(iv) ✓ ✕ ✓

(d) Why are endocrine glands called ductless glands?

30. Answer sub-questions (a) to (c) on the basis of your understanding of the following
paragraph and the related studied concepts.
Plants do not have a nervous system and sense organs like eyes, ears, nose, etc., but
like animals, they can still sense things. The plants can sense the presence of stimuli like
light, gravity, chemicals, water, touch, etc., and respond to them. The stimuli like light,
gravity, chemicals, water, touch, etc., are called environmental changes. So, we can also
say that plants coordinate their behavior against environmental changes by using
hormones.
The hormones in plants such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, and abscises acid
coordinate their behavior by affecting the growth of a plant. The effect on the growth
of the plant can result in the movement of a part of the plant like a shoot (stem) or
root.
Plants normally show two types of movement:
• Growth-Dependent movement: such movement is also known as tropic movements
i.e., (away and towards stimulus)
• Non-Growth Dependent movement: All those movements occurred without the
stimulus. Such a movement is also known as the Nastic movement.
All the non-directional movements are classified in the Nastic Moments.
For example: When we touch a Touch-me-not plant (Mimosa pudica), it immediately
folds its leaves. Such kind of movement occurs because of a change in the water
content in the leaves. On this basis, they either shrink or swell.
(a) The movement of sunflower following the path of the sun is due to phenomenon
X. Identify X.
(b) The movement in the Mimosa pudica plant is growth-dependent or non-growth
dependent movement? Justify
(c) Suggest the hormones that can be used:
(i) to promote cell division in plants
(ii) to help the growth of the stem
