ES 202-01 MATHEMATICS FOR ENGINEERS – Fall 2024-2025

Objectives: This course is mainly designed to give sophomore engineering students fundamental concepts of
linear algebra, vector spaces, and vector calculus relevant to their fields.

TOPICS:
Part 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF LINEAR ALGEBRA
1. Matrices, matrix operations, special matrices, determinant and inverse of a matrix by adjoint method.
2. Elementary row and column operations, row echelon forms, rank of a matrix, solution of a system of
equations by Gaussian elimination method (GEM), Gauss-Jordan method, determinant and inverse of a
matrix by GEM.
3. Linear transformation and change of bases.
4. Characteristic value problems and related theorems, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization of a
matrix, modal matrix, quadratic forms.

Part 2: VECTOR ANALYSIS


5. Introduction to vectors, vector spaces, linear independence, basis, orthogonality.
6. Vector differentiation. Parametric representation of curves. Tangent, arc length.
7. Gradient, divergence and curl.
8. Line, surface and volume integrals.
9. Green, Gauss and Stokes’ theorems.
10. Special topics.

GRADING POLICY:
(5%) HWs,
(60%) Midterm exams, (Exam date: 8th Nov 2024 and 13th Dec. 2024 at 08:40 am at MM125)
(35%) Final exam, (will be announced)

- No food or beverages allowed throughout lectures/breaks in classroom.


- Mobile phones and all other electronic equipments have to be turned off and cannot be used during
classes and exams.
- Make-up exam will not be given.
