Terms
Mc = magic circle
Ch = chain
Yo = yarn over
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Tr = treble crochet
Sl St = slip stitch
*This pattern can be completed by beginner to
experienced crocheters who have a basic knowledge of
crochet terms
Customization ideas: Add a fabric lining to make the bag
sturdier or add velcro or a button as closures.
*Adding a lining also helps hide yarn tails inside the bag
Center:
Round 1: Begin by making a magic circle (Mc) with your
center color yarn and chain 3. Dc 11 into the Mc. Join to the
first Dc with a Sl St. You should have 12 stitches (the first
chain counts as 1 stitch) Pull the tail to close the ring.
Round 2: Chain 2 and insert 1 Dc in the same stitch. Then
insert 2 Dc in each remaining stitch. Sl st in the first stitch and
fasten off.
Sun rays:
Round 3: Take the dark yellow yarn and Sl St into any stitch
in the circle. Chain 3 then insert 1 Dc in the next stitch. and
chain 3.
a. For the next stitch, Yarn over (Yo) insert the hook and pull
the yarn through the stitch. Then Yo and pull through two
loops on the hook.
*Two loops should remain on the hook.
Yo and insert the hook in the next stitch, Yo and pull the
yarn through the stitch. Yo again and pull the yarn
through two loops on the hook. Yarn over pull through two
loops and Yo pull through for the last two loops on the
hook. Ch. 3.
Repeat step a. for the remaining stitches with 3 Ch in
between each ray. Each ray uses two stitches of the center
and you should end up with 12 rays. Sl St in the first stitch
when you reach the end and tie off.
Main square:
Round 4: Take the main color yarn and Sl St in between
two petals, Ch.3. insert 2 Dc in the same space. Insert 3 Dc
in the next space. To make the corner insert 3 Tr, Ch 1, and
3 Tr in the same space. The corners will have 6 Tr total
with a chain between Tr #3&4. Repeat doing 3 Dc, 3 Dc, 3
Tr, Ch 1, 3 Tr in the next stitches until you finish the round.
Sl St in the first Dc and fasten off.
Round 5: Sl St the main yarn into a stitch in between the
Dc and the Tr on the right top corner, Ch 3. insert 2 Dc into
the same stitch. 3 Dc in the next two stitches. When you
reach the corner insert 3 Tr, 1 Ch, 3 Tr. Repeat these steps
just like round 4 for the rest of the square. *Reminder: the
corners will have 6 Tr total with a chain between Tr #3&4.
When you reach the end slip stitch into the first Dc and
fasten off. Use your tapestry needle to weave in any ends.
Once you have finished the square insert the hook into any
stitch and sl st the main bag color yarn. Insert 1 Sc in each
stitch. Insert 2 Sc's in the corners. Repeat to finish the
round. Sl st in the first stitch when you reach the end, tie
off and hide the tail.
Making the panels:
Place two squares side by side. Insert the hook in the
left corner of a square and Sl st the yarn. Then insert
the hook into the corner of the other square and Sl st
the yarn through. Insert the hook into the back loop
of the first square and Sl st the yarn. Continue Sl st in
the back loop of each stitch alternating between
squares. Fasten off and hide the tail when you reach
the end. Do this six more times to have 7 panels of
two squares.

*You can use the method suggested or any other joining
method you'd like.
Take two panels and attach them using the same
technique long sides together. Repeat one more time to
have two panels of 4 squares for the front and back panel.
You should have five pieces: two panels of four squares
and three panels of two squares for the: front, back,
bottom, and two sides.
Border:
Insert the hook in any stitch of one of the panels, Sl st and
Ch 3. Insert a Hdc in each stitch going around. Insert 2 Hdc
in the two middle stitches where you joined the squares,
and two Hdc's in the. Sl st when you reach the beginning,
tie off and hide the tails. Repeat this step for the remaining
pieces.
Assembling the bag:
*For this step we will attach the pieces using a
mattress stitch.
Take two of the smaller panels, put them wrong sides
facing each other and thread your tapestry needle with
yarn. To sew the short sides: Start at the corner and thread
the needle through the two first back loops. Thread the
needle back and forth through the back loops until you
reach the end. Pull both end tails to tighten. Tie off and use
the needle hide the ends in the backside.

Attach the other side panel in the same way so you have a
a long strip of three panels.
Place the front panel right side face down, take the long
side panel (wrong sides facing each other), wrap it around
and pin it in place using sewing pins leaving the top open.
Attach the pieces together with needle and thread using
the mattress stitch.
Attach the second side wrong sides facing together in the
same way.
Top edge:
Insert the hook in a stitch on the right side panel, Sl st the
yarn and chain 2. Insert 1 Hdc in each stitch going around
until you reach the end. Sl st in the first stitch, tie off and
hide the tail.
Making the straps:
Make a slip knot, with a 6" tail and chain 7. Insert 1 Hdc in
the first stitch from the hook. Continue inserting 1 Hdc in
each stitch to finish the row.
Ch. 1, turn your work and insert 1 Hdc in each stitch.
Continue this step for each row until you reach the desired
length (I made a strap around 23" in length). Tie off at the
end leaving a 6" tail Repeat to make a second strap.
Sewing the straps:
Thread the needle with the yarn tail from the strap and
sew the strap to the top of the bag. Tie off, hide the tail
and repeat for the left side and the second strap to finish
the bag.
