My weekend
Mei
I went to stay with my grandparents at the weekend. They live in a bungalow. It
isn’t very big,
but it’s modern and comfortable. We picked apples in the garden and I read
a book about some clever children who designed a robot. In the evenings,
we played games in the kitchen. One night, we heard loud claps of thunder
and saw a lot of lightning through the window. It was spectacular!
Pat
I went to the coast with my mum. Every morning we went swimming at
the beach and then we went to a café for a big lunch. I always had some
really fantastic carrot cake for dessert! In the afternoons, we went back to
the beach and I read a book about a family who went to Iceland and saw
the northern lights. I’d like to do that when I’m older!
Rayan
I stayed at home with my parents and my brother and sister. I planted
carrots, squash and beans with my mother in the garden. Every evening,
we watched the sunset. When I went to bed, I read a book about three
children who are the same age as me. They went out in a little boat at
night, but they weren’t afraid. I’d love to be like them!

0 Who went to a house without any stairs?

Anna is talking to an environmentalist called Paul. Read the interview and
the questions below. For each question, circle the correct answer.
Interview with an environmentalist
Anna: What’s your job, Paul?
Paul: I’m an environmentalist. I think that protecting the environment and
endangered wildlife is really important. The problems that our planet
has are enormous. Sometimes people think that they can’t do much to
help, but that’s not true.
Anna: What’s one of the most important problems?
Paul: Well, plastic rubbish in the sea can hurt or kill turtles, fish and other
animals. When people go shopping, they often buy food in lots and
lots of plastic. We can’t recycle all of this plastic, so we shouldn’t use
so much of it.
Anna: Do you live in an eco-house?
Paul: Yes, I do, actually. I started living there five years ago. It was
built 13 years ago by a conservationist who lived there for eight
years and then sold it to me.
Anna: What’s your house made from?
Paul: The walls are made of stone and mud. For the roof, first they used
wood, then they put grass on top of it. I have solar panels to provide
electricity.
Anna: Do you have any habits that you’re going to change?
Paul: I haven’t eaten meat since I was 18, but I’m keen on cheese and
other things made of milk. I’ll stop eating those, and eat more rice,
fruit and vegetables. That’s my promise for the future!
Example:
0 What does Paul say about our planet’s problems?
a They are tiny. b There are no solutions. c They are huge.
1 What does Paul say about plastic? [1]
a We should recycle it. b We use too much of it. c We can’t reuse a lot of
it.
2 How many years has Paul lived in his eco-house? [1]
a 5 b 8 c 13
3 What is Paul’s roof made [1]
of? b wood and mud c stone and
a grass and wood grass
4 What is Paul going to stop eating? [1]
a meat b cheese c rice
