PERTEMUAN 6 : POLITICS
ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
MATA KULIAH : BAHASA INGGRIS
A. INTRODUCTION
Politic is design to help the students at this level to improve their vocabularies,
understanding about English Law and they will know certain terms about politics in English .
The students will study how to put the cases of story into the correct order. The students are
supposed to do some exercises which based on the reading moral issues , put the story into the
correct order, fill the gap with the suitable words and read short story, then write down the
respond to the question based on the student’s knowledge of the law in our country . . The
material is reading comprehension, It is about the police’s job, the situation in the court, and the
rule of punishment.
The need oriented aspects of the process of learning taken from the situation in the
country. The cultural context of Indonesia enhance oral communication because the use of the
language is forced by situation and within the Indonesian environment.
Law students can express their idea more freely when the current issues are discussed
about the law or other related topics than theme which are out of their scope. The students can
participate more actively in some discussions in the learning process such as : some current
issues in the country, the court, State ideology or any other current issues will be discussed in the
classroom. The current issues which have been discussed will increase the students’ initiative,
creativity and analytical capability
B.THE AIMS OF THE LECTURER
The aims of the materials are hoped to make the students understand about vocabularies
that connect to the police, the court and the punishment. the use of vocabularies in reading
comprehension is intended to improve their understanding about Law and order in reading
comprehension . Reading comprehension will be shown to make the students skimming and
scanning the material and they will understand the use of certain vocabularies about the law. The
students will be instructed to made tthe sentence or simple sentence on the screen. After the
learning process the students are hoped to be able to :
To write and to answer the question which based on the reading comprehension about
the police, the court and punishment
To improve their vocabularies about the police, the court and the rule of punishment
To give some comments about current issues in the country
A. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
Politics
Types of government
Monarchy a state ruled by a king or queen. There are also countries that have
monarchy, but the monarchy is not the ruler, e.g. The united Kingdom
Republic: a state ruled by representatives (= men or women chosen by the people)
and a president, e.g. USA or France. People who believe in this system are
republicans.
Democracy a system of government in which leaders are chosen by the people, e.g.
France or the UK. People who believe in this system are democrats.
Dictatorship a system of government in which one person rules the country (=one
person has total power) this person is called a dictator.

People who believe in social democracy are social democrats.
POLITICAL POSITION
What does it mean to be a nationalism or a conservative? Often, it means different
things in different countries, but in Britain we often talk about someone’s political
position like this:
Left –wing / on the left middle of road / right-wing / on the
right
(=socialist) in the center ( = liberal ) (= conservative)
ELECTION
In the election (= they choose in a formal way / elect) the political party
They do not an election, and in many countries election take place / are held (=they
happen) every four or five years.42% voted for socialists in the last election (= the
socialists got 42% of the votes).The president was elected two years ago.
GOVERNMENT
Political system is different all over the world. In the UK, when a political party
wins a majority 51% votes of seats (=official positions in parliament) in a election,
they become the government of the country, their leader (the head of the party/
person in control) become politic minister and they are in power.
The governments have policies (=programmers of action) to run (=manage) the
country. This is an example, an economic policy (for the economy), and a foreign
policy
