Project Title : The long-term effects of COVID-19 on the cognitive health of the survivors and

its neural underpinnings.

You are invited to take part in this study. This is an ICMR-funded research project headed by
Prof. (Dr.) Atanu Biswas, Head, Department of Neurology, Institute of Post Graduate
Medical Education and Research and Bangur Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY ?

Coronavirus acutely affects several organs including the
brain. Besides direct neuro-invasion, several other
associated health conditions can lead to brain dysfunction
resulting in neuro-cognitive disorders. Cognitive deficits
can have a serious impact on the quality of life of the
COVID-19 survivors. We do not have, so far, any
comprehensive study on cognitive deficits ensuing from the
COVID-19 related brain damage. This study will investigate
this aspect and help clinicians get a better understanding
of the disease and its impact on cognitive health. We have
obtained permission from the Institutional Ethics
Committee for conducting this study.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY ?

You can participate in the study if you fulfill the following criteria :
COVID-19 survivors OR Healthy person (COVID-19 non-infected)
Above 18 years of age
Native Bengali speaker
At least 10 years of formal education
No history of neurological or psychological disorders prior to COVID-19 infection, or
psychotropic drugs, and / or substance abuse.
Fit for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE STUDY ?

The participants in this study will be divided into two groups – COVID-19 survivors and COVID-19 non-
infected people. You will be included in one of these two groups. This will be an open-label study.
This means it will be known to you as well as your investigator whether you are being
administered a particular test. You will be assessed using various scales on cognitive, psychological,
and functional aspects. An MRI scan of the brain will be done and may be repeated up to four times.
The study will be conducted in 4 phases over a period of two years and each phase will consist of
3-4 sessions. So, the assessments will be repeated every six months. Audio
recordings and video recordings may be done with your consent.
