traffic interface card, fan, and power. The supported card types are different in different products.
The actual module is the card that is physically inserted into the slot. The expected module is the card
that is logically assigned and configured in the management system. Once the card is assigned, traffic
can be configured over it. After card is inserted physically, traffic will be up.
Card assignment can be done to an empty slot or to a slot with the same type of module.

5 QoS Configuration
5.1 QoS Overview
Qos (Quality of Service) is a criterion to measure performance when the data stream goes through the
network. It’s used to ensure the quality of point-to-point services.
The system offers a complete QoS function that supports different quality level, to provide differentiated
services and guarantee the service quality requirement during multi-service transmission. The QoS
function includes:
Traffic classification
Policing and shaping
Congestion management
Queuing
Layered QoS
5.1.1 Datagram Classification
Datagram classification can distinguish different services, which is a pre-condition of QoS
implementation.
5.1.2 Policing
Policing is used for flow control at the ingress side, to avoid too much bandwidth occupied by some
traffic, and to allow more users to share the limited bandwidth. The SNPT uses TCM to do the policing.
Policing supports the following functions:
Blind and color aware mode.
Double token bucket, committed information rate (CIR), committed burst size (CBS), excessive
information rate (EIR) and excessive burst size (EBS).
Coloring and QoS.
Bandwidth limit on all interfaces or all traffic level, with granularity as 64 kps.
5.1.3 Traffic Shaping
Traffic shaping buffers the burst packets at the egress side and makes them more possible to be
forwarded when the traffic rate decreases. It is implemented via a buffer area and token bucket. When
there is congestion at the egress side, unsent packets will be buffered in the buffer area first, and re-
sent when there is no congestion.
5.1.4 Congestion Management
SNPT supports discarding green and yellow packets with tailing and with WRED policies. Both policies
can be used if the forwarding rate is greater than the egress bandwidth, which means the buffer will be
used out.
Ribbon Com m unications Inc. Proprietary 28
LCT-SNPT Operation and Maintenance Manual QoS Configuration
5.1.5 Queuing
Queuing happens when there is congestion. It specifies different QoS for different classes of traffic,
guaranteeing the QoS of the high-class traffic. SNPT supports two queuing algorithms (SP and DWRR)
and eight classes of service (CS7, CS6, EF, AF4, AF3, AF2, AF1 and BE).
NOTE: There is 10M bandwidth reserved invisibly in CS7 for signal transmission.
5.1.6 Layered QoS
SNPT supports PW and Tunnel policing for AF1~AF4 traffic with ELSP type.

6.3 Virtual Interface Management
LAG (Link Aggregation Group) combines a set of physical links together into a logical link (LAG), which
provides higher bandwidth and more reliability. SNPT supports LAG over Ethernet links. Both manual
and static aggregation is supported.
LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) is used to dynamically control whether the physical interface
can join the LAG.
The available aggregation methods are:
Manual Aggregation: You manually create a LAG and add the members of LAG. Manual
aggregation does not use LACP protocol and can only interwork with equipment that does not
LACP. In the case of individual member failure (such as a unidirectional fiber break of one
Ethernet interface), the transmission side of the broken fiber cannot detect the failure. Traffic will
be affected if load sharing is in use, or interrupted if there is no non-load sharing.
Static Aggregation: You manually create a LAG and add the member links. LACP is used in
static aggregation, but it does not change your configuration. Equipment on both sides of the link
will negotiate about the aggregation over LCAP. As the aggregation is not dependent on the
configuration of either end, control of the aggregation is more accurate and effective.
6.3.1 Set the Global LACP for LAG

Field Description
LACP System Priority The LAG priority, which affects the working status of the LAG member ports,
between 0 – 65535. The default is 32678.
When the local LAG negotiates with a remote LAG, they can get the LAG
system priority from each other and use the logical calculation of the one
with the higher priority as the common result of both ends. If both sides have
the same priority, the MAC address will be compared, and the LAG with the
lower MAC address will get priority.
LACP System ID The MAC address of the Ethernet destination.
LACP Software Version The LACP software version.

the local end to the remote end. Packets are encapsulated into PWs, added with an MPLS (Multi-
Protocol Label Switching) label, and sent to the tunnel for transmission. They are recovered at the
destination end, keeping the original characteristics.

7 OAM Configuration
7.1 OAM Overview
OAM (Operations Administration and Maintenance) is a tool for monitoring network. With feedback from
OAM, the network administrator can quickly locate the network problems.
SNPT has a layered OAM function for quick problem detection and location on each layer. With the
protection given by quick problem detection with the OAM, the QoS of the telecommunication class can
be guaranteed in the packet switch network.
The following diagram shows the layered OAM module:
OAM Layered Module
7.2 OAM Bandwidth Requirements
If Performance Monitoring is not enabled, reserve 300k bandwidth in each OAM for the
application. If Performance Monitoring is enabled, plan the bandwidth used for Performance
Monitoring based on the configuration.
For the LSP layer and PW layer, when the QoS type is EE-LSP or E-LSP, reserve 300k extra
bandwidth in CS7 for OAM.
For the LSP layer and PW layer, when the QoS type is L-LSP, reserve 300k extra bandwidth in
the related queue for OAM.
Ribbon Com m unications Inc. Proprietary 60

7.3 MPLS-TP OAM
The MPLS-TP OAM mechanism detects, determines, and locates defects in the MPLS network, and
effectively monitors the network performance. The equipment can use the status detected by the OAM
to trigger protection switches, thereby providing fast defect detection and service protection.
Monitoring of the network performance includes package loss ratio, delay, and jitter. MPLS-TP OAM
guarantees service quality at the telecommunication level in packet switch networks.
MPLS-TP OAM has three layers:
Section OAM
LSP OAM
PW OAM
The ITU Y.1731 protocol runs in the three layers to accomplish the function defined by the OAM.
7.3.1 MPLS-TP OAM Related Concepts
ME (Maintenance Entity)
In T-MPLS, the basic ME is the T-MPLS path. M represents an entity to be managed. It is a relationship
between two ME points.
MEG (Maintenance Entity Group)
MEs in one MEG are in the same management domain boundary and have the same MEG level.
MEP (Maintenance End Point)
The MEP is the ingress and egress node for OAM messages. It's related to service.
MIP (Maintenance Intermediate Point)
A MIP can't initiate OAM messages, but can execute specific actions for certain OAM messages.
MEL (MEG Level)
There are 8 (0-7) MELs. In MEG nesting, different MEGs uses different MELs level to distinguish OAM
frames.

7.6 CFM
The CFM (Connectivity Fault Management) protocol is a two-layer Ethernet OAM protocol. CFM
provides automatic fault detection for point-to-point or multipoint-to-multipoint EVC (Ethernet Virtual
Connection). It is an end-to-end service level OAM protocol.
CFM is distinguished from other OAMs by its ability to monitor EVC connectivity.
7.6.1 CFM OAM Related Concepts
MD (Maintenance Domain)
A MD means the network that needs OAM. One important property of MD is level. Level limits the OAM
operation. MD can be nested, but not overlap. The principle of MD OAM processing messages is to
block low level messages, transport high level messages, and handle the same level messages.
MA (Maintenance Association)
A MA is a domain related to service. MA consists of several MEPs.
Ribbon Com m unications Inc. Proprietary 75
LCT-SNPT Operation and Maintenance Manual OAM Configuration
MEP (Maintenance End Point)
A MEP is the ingress and egress node of an OAM message. It is related to services. Each MEP has a
unique MEP ID in the MA. In a network, the MA and MEP ID can define one MEP uniquely.
MIP (Maintenance Intermediate Point)
A MIP is related to an MD, not to an MA. A MIP cannot initiate an OAM message, but it can respond
and forward LB and LT messages. For CC messages, MIPs only support forwarding, not processing.

8 BFD Configuration
8.1 BFD Overview
Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) is a fault detection mechanism with a light load and short
duration. It can detect faults on any kinds of links between systems, including direct physical links,
virtual circuits, tunnels, MPLS LSP, multi-hop routes, and unidirectional links.
For BFD, the equipment on both ends exchange identification. Both ends simultaneously send a CC
message and a CV message at specified intervals. The receiver compares its configuration information
with received information. If there is a match, the link is up between both ends. If there is not a match,
or if the receiver does not receive the BFD message before the timeout, it reports an error link alarm or
a timeout alarm.

9 Synchronization Management
9.1 Clocking Overview
Synchronization required is to centralize the bytes to be sent and sent in a batch and omit the reminder
of start-stop bits of all bytes, which increases the efficiency of data transmission.
9.1.1 Synchronization Types
There are two main types of synchronization:
Clock Synchronization: Also known as frequency synchronization, clock synchronization works
using a strict relationship on frequency or phase between signals. The corresponding effective
moment appears at the same mean speed to guarantee all the equipment in the network is
working at the same speed.
Time Synchronization: Also known as phase synchronization, time synchronization works by
keeping the frequency and phase the same between signals.
9.1.2 Clock Source
The system includes two clock sources:
System Clock: Provides a synchronized clock for the whole system.
External Clock: Provides a clocking reference to a 2M external clock port.
9.1.3 Clocking Models
The following clocking models are available:
Ordinary Clock (OC): Connects to the network via a PTP port. It maintains a local clock and a
port clock, and uses a BMC algorithm to determine the primary clock and secondary clock. When
the port clock is the secondary clock, equipment gets clock packets from the PTP port to recover
the clock. When the port clock is the primary clock, the system works as free running or locked to
the external clock port, and advertises the clock from the port.
Boundary Clock (BC): Connects to the network via multiple PTP ports. Each PTP of a boundary
clock is the same as that of an ordinary clock. It maintains one set of clock information, and
shares the local clock and current clock source information. When the BMC algorithm selects a
local clock, the boundary clock is the primary clock. All the ports act as primary and advertise the
clock. When the BMC algorithm selects a PTP port, the PTP port is secondary and the clock is
recovered from the port. All the other ports are primary and advertise the clock information.
Transparent Clock (TC): Consists of transparent ports. A transparent clock forwards all the PTP
packets in the same way as a router or switch. It is not synchronized with the PTP ports. Instead,
it calculates the residence time (the amount of time packets spend going through the node). A
transparent clock can work together with an ordinary clock or a boundary clock in one node, and
act as a network element.

10 Service Configuration
10.1 Service Configuration Overview
SNPT supports both Ethernet services and CES (Circuit Emulation Service).
The supported Ethernet services include E-Line, E-LAN and E-Tree serviced.
The supported CES include E1, STM-1, and aggregation services. Only point-to-point CES
services are supported in the current release, which means only traffic in one TDM port can be
mapped to one PW. You cannot map multiple TDM ports to one PW.
10.2 Service Configuration Workflow
Configuring a service includes the following steps:
1. Create a logical card, as described in Card Configuration. The system will create the
corresponding physical ports according to the logical card type.
2. Create an AC port, as described in AC Interface Management. The AC port can be attached to a
physical port or a LAG port. You can set the port, timeslot, QoS, and OAM for input traffic.
3. Create a tunnel/LSP port, as described in Configure a Tunnel Interface and Configure an LPS
Interface. On the PE node, you can set the input and output nodes for the tunnel, bandwidth, LSP
protection, LSP OAM, and so on. You can also set the input and egress labels for the working and
protection LSP and corresponding NNI port. On the P node, you can create the cross connections
of each LSP.
4. Create a PW, as described in Configure a PW Interface. You can set the bandwidth, OAM, labels,
and QoS, as well as the corresponding port, which could be a tunnel or NNI port.
5. Create cross-connections, as described in E-Line Service Configuration, E-LAN Service
Configuration, E-Tree Service Configuration, and CES Service Configuration. You can associate
the AC to a specified cross-connection and associate the PW to a specified cross-connection.
NOTE: Ethernet services cross-connect between ETH AC and PW ETH. CES services
cross-connect between SDH AC and PW SDH, or PDH AC and PW PDH. CCC services
cross-connect between PW (ETH/SDH/PDH)/E1 or SDH AC/ETH AC.

11 LPT Configuration
11.1 LPT Configuration Overview
LPT (Link State Pass Through) is a technology that transfers the link state of one side to another side
through the network. This lets the device on one side make a correlative operation according to the
other side’s link state. For example, to start a backup link when remote link is faulty, thereby realizing
network level protection.
The LPT mechanism can detect faults between the service access point and the transport network and
inform the fault. It then notifies devices on both sides to start up the backup network in time for
communicating, to ensure the normal data transmission.
11.1.1 LPT Working Mechanism
The following diagram shows the LPT function application model:
LPT Function Application Model
On the user side:
In normal case, when access point link on CE1 side is faulty, CE1 will detect the link fault and start
up the backup network automatically, then try to use backup network to communicate with CE2.
Due to CE2 cannot get the information from CE1 of the link fault, it will still use the original
network to communicate with CE1, leading the communication between CE1 and CE2 failed.
After starting up LPT function, if the transmission device PE1 detected the link fault between itself
and CE1, it will send LPT message to transmission device PE2 on the other side. PE2 will let CE2
detect the link fault by shutting down its own interface, therefore CE2 will start up backup network
then set up the connection with CE1 in backup network.
On the network side, after detecting service network fault, service network will start up LPT function,
and send LPT message to the faulty end, cut down connections between transmission devices
(PE1/PE2) and access devices (CE1/CE2), then use backup network to communicate.
Ribbon Com m unications Inc. Proprietary 123
LCT-SNPT Operation and Maintenance Manual LPT Configuration
11.1.2 LPT Application
Scenarios of LPT function supporting E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree:
Access point fault
As in below picture, after detecting fault between transmission device PE1 and access point CE1, PE1
will shut down the link between PE1 and CE1, then send PE2 the information with link fault between
itself and CE1. At the same time PE1 will supervise the link state between itself and CE1, in case that if
the link recovers, service can recover to normal state. After receiving the message with link fault on the
otherside, PE2 will shut down the link between PE2 and CE2, then let both sides shift to backup
network. If recovery of link between PE1 and CE1 has been detected, PE1 will send fault recovery
message to PE2, after receiving this message PE2 will open the link, service will be recovered to
original network.
Network fault
As in below picture, under the situation of network fault with single-direction, for example, if the network
between PE1 and PE2 is faulty only on PE1PE2 direction, PE2 will shut down the link between PE2
and CE2 after detecting the network fault, at the same time send a message to PE1 with PE2 side’s link
fault information by using the original service network on PE2PE1 direction. After receiving this
message, PE1 will shut down the link between PE1 and CE1, to make both sides shifted to backup
network at the same time.
