Session 2: CREATION STORY
Learning Objectives
Participants will understand:
1. What the bible teaches about creation and man.
2. How the fall of man came about.
Scripture to memorise: “He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and
everything in them-he remains faithful forever” (Psalm 146:6).
To understand how everything, including people, came into existence, let’s look at
what is recorded in these Scriptures.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
“Through him (Jesus) all things were made; without him nothing was made that
has been made” (John 1:3).
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been
created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16).
So, the universe and people – everything that exists, had a beginning.

Discipleship Course 19
Man’s Origin and Who He is
Scripture to Memorise: “God created humankind in his own image, in the image of
God he created them, male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27)
This is a brief study of who of man is. “Anthropos” is the Greek word for man. The
Biblical study of man is called ………………….. In this study we will consider the
nature of man, his origin, and the results of his fall through Adam.
When we look at Scripture and what it records in relation to the beginning of
man, we find that man was made in the ………. and ……… of God (Genesis 1:26).
Let’s look at the meaning of these two words. Image means a shadow or outline
of a figure or object, while likeness has to do with resemblance. But understanding
these two concepts with respect to man is not as easy as it might seem. Even
theologians are not in agreement about the nature of the meaning of “image and
likeness” and how this is true of man. But let’s look at some Scriptures that will
shed light on the idea that man is created in God’s image and likeness.
Ephesians 4:23-24 tells us that man is created to be like God in ………………..and
……..…. Colossians 3:10 states that the new man is being ………… to a true ……..
(What man was originally created to be) according to the ………. of the one
who created him.
What according to Genesis 2:7 did God breath into man after he formed him from
the dust of the ground? ……………………………………………………………………
What did God ask man to do in Genesis 2:19-20?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………….
In summary, being made in the ………… and ……….. of God means man
possesses God’s spiritual, moral and intellectual characteristics. We should
remember that while man, from one side of his nature, is similar to mammals in
some ways, he is a creature of much higher order and more splendid nature. He is
created in the image and likeness of God.
Perhaps a word needs to be added here. Being created in the “image and
likeness of God” does not mean man has the physical likeness of God. John 4:24
states clearly that God is …………….. A spirit does not have flesh and bones.
What does Deuteronomy 4:15 imply about God’s appearance?
