INTRODUCTION
In today's competitive world, time management is an essential skill for
students. At Thuong Mai University, managing time effectively helps students
balance their academic work, extracurricular activities, and personal life.
Without proper time management, many students struggle to meet deadlines and
maintain a healthy work-life balance. This essay will discuss the concept of time
management and its importance in students' daily lives and future careers.
1. The Concept of Time Management
Time management refers to the process of planning and organizing how to
divide time between various tasks. It involves prioritizing important activities,
setting goals, and creating schedules to ensure that tasks are completed
efficiently and on time. For students, mastering time management is key to
achieving academic success, reducing stress, and maintaining a well-balanced
lifestyle.
2. The Current Situation Regarding Time Management
Managing time effectively is a crucial skill for university students,
significantly impacting their academic performance and personal development.
A recent survey conducted at Thuong Mai University provides valuable insights
into how students perceive and approach time management. The findings reveal
variations in students' awareness of time management, their planning habits, and
factors influencing their time allocation.
4
2.1. Students' interest in their own time management
Graph 1: Students' opinions on the influence of time management on themselves
(Unit: %)
To begin with, the survey results reveal varying perceptions among
students regarding the importance of time management. Specifically, 65.6% of
students acknowledge that time management significantly impacts their lives,
with 33% considering it important, 29.9% viewing it as normal, and only 2.7%
rating it as very important. This indicates that the majority of students are aware
of the value of time management and have made efforts to apply it in their daily
routines. However, a notable 34.5% of students perceive time management as
unimportant, highlighting a concerning gap in the understanding of this essential
skill. This group may consist of students who are not experiencing significant
academic pressure, lack the necessary skills to manage their time effectively, or
have lighter schedules that allow for a more flexible approach to time
management. Such attitudes can negatively impact academic performance and
hinder students’ ability to balance their studies with personal life in the long
term. Therefore, it is crucial to promote awareness and provide training on
effective time management strategies to ensure students are better equipped to
handle future demands.
5
2.2. The current situation of organizing the implementation of the student's time
management plan
Graph 2: Students' opinions on timetable making (Unit: %)
The data indicate that 48.2% of students do not support the use of
timetables, with 24.1% disagreeing and another 24.1% completely disagree the
idea. This is a significant proportion, as nearly half of the surveyed students do
not see time planning as essential or fail to follow a set schedule. Several factors
could contribute to this trend, such as difficulties in adhering to a fixed timetable
due to frequently changing study and lifestyle commitments. Additionally, some
students may not perceive the clear benefits of planning, prefer a more flexible
approach, or lack guidance on how to create an effective schedule. Furthermore,
25.3% of students hold a neutral stance, possibly indicating an awareness of the
value of planning but lacking the methods or motivation to implement it
consistently. On the other hand, 26.4% of students are in favor of using
timetables, though only a small percentage (1.5%) fully embrace it. This
suggests that while there is a segment of the student population that recognizes
the benefits of structured time management, there is still a need to foster a more
widespread understanding of its importance and provide practical strategies for
its adoption.
Survey of students of Thuong Mai University on the expected level of work
completion, the results are shown in the following chart:

time fund, the results are shown in the following chart:
Graph 4: Students' interest in their own time (Unit: %)
Graph 5.1: Survey of students on how much time they spend on entertainment
in 1 day (Unit: %)
According to survey data, around 75.1% of students dedicate between 1
and less than 4 hours daily to entertainment activities, while only 0.4% spend
over 4 hours. This suggests that most students are mindful of limiting their
leisure time to avoid negatively impacting other activities. However, nearly half
of the students spend 2 to 4 hours a day on leisure activities, which could
potentially interfere with study time or personal tasks if not managed effectively.
7
Excessive time spent on activities like watching movies, social media, or
gaming may reduce opportunities for studying or personal development.
Graph 5.2: Survey of students on how much time they spend studying
in 1 day (Unit: %)
The majority of students (75%) also allocate between 1 and less than 4
hours daily to studying, with 26.4% devoting 3 to 4 hours, the highest
proportion. Only 0.8% exceed 4 hours of study time, indicating a relatively
balanced approach to academics. However, the fact that 24.1% study for less
than 1 hour each day is concerning, as it may indicate a lack of focus or an
ineffective study plan, potentially leading to poor exam preparation or limited
knowledge.
Graph 5.3: Student survey on how much time is spent on sports activities in
1 day (Unit: %)
Regarding physical activity, 97.2% of students exercise for 1 to 4 hours
daily, reflecting a positive trend in health maintenance. However, only 0.1%
exceed 4 hours, suggesting that physical activity usually remains within a
reasonable range. On the other hand, 24.5% of students spend less than 1 hour
exercising, indicating that some students may not prioritize physical health.
8
Overall, approximately 75% of students spend between 1 and less than 4
hours per day on both leisure and study, suggesting a relatively balanced
distribution of time. Additionally, most students maintain a moderate level of
physical activity, with similar time allocations for exercise.
Graph 6: Reasonableness in arranging time for student activities (Unit: %)
2.3. Factors that affect student time management
Graph 7: Students' opinions on factors affecting time management (Unit:
people)
Survey data on the impact of various activities on students' time budgets
indicates that tasks such as commuting, socializing, social media use, and
household chores significantly affect their daily schedules. These activities
occupy a substantial portion of students' time, with the majority rating them as
having a "High Impact" or "Extremely High Impact." Notably, social media
usage and time spent with friends stand out as factors that could negatively
affect time management if not properly controlled.
Additionally, activities like romantic relationships, sports, and club
involvement are acknowledged by students to have some influence, but are
9
generally viewed as positive for personal growth. However, it remains crucial to
allocate time for these pursuits wisely to avoid diminishing the time dedicated to
studies and training. Overall, students should be more mindful in organizing
their schedules to maintain a balance between personal and academic
commitments.
While a significant number of students are aware of the importance of
time management, there is a gap between awareness and effective
implementation. With nearly half of the surveyed students not following
structured time management practices, there is a need for more guidance on
creating and maintaining an effective schedule. Addressing these challenges
could help students achieve a better balance between their academic and
personal lives.
3.Benefits of Effective Time Management
3.1 Enhance Academic Performance
Good time management skills are essential for students aiming to enhance
their academic performance and overall educational experience. By effectively
organizing their schedules, students can allocate sufficient time for studying,
completing assignments, and reviewing material before exams. This structured
approach not only aids in meeting deadlines but also significantly reduces the
stress associated with last-minute cramming, which often leads to lower
retention of information. When students set aside specific time blocks for
different subjects or tasks, they are better able to focus their attention, leading to
a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the material.
Moreover, students who manage their time well are likely to participate
more actively in class discussions and engage in additional learning
opportunities, such as extracurricular activities, study groups, or tutoring
sessions. Active participation fosters a collaborative learning environment where
students can share insights, clarify doubts, and deepen their comprehension of
complex subjects. This interaction not only enhances individual learning but
10
also builds a sense of community within the classroom, which can be motivating
and inspiring.
3.2 Promote a healthy work-life balance for students.
In today’s fast-paced educational environment, maintaining a healthy
work-life balance is increasingly important for students. Good time management
skills are instrumental in achieving this balance by allowing students to allocate
time not only for their studies but also for extracurricular activities, and part-
time jobs. For example, a student who effectively organizes their study time can
ensure they have enough time to engage in sports, spend time with friends, or
pursue personal interests. This balance is crucial for overall well-being and
mental health.
Moreover, when students manage their time wisely, they are less likely to
experience burnout or fatigue, which can result from continuous study without
breaks. Setting aside time for rest and leisure activities enables students to
recharge, enhancing their focus and productivity when they return to their
studies. Furthermore, this balanced approach to life encourages the development
of a well-rounded individual who values both academic achievement and
personal happiness. Therefore, strong time management skills are essential for
promoting a healthy lifestyle, leading to more sustainable academic success and
overall life satisfaction.
3.3 Prepare for Future Success
Good time management skills are crucial for preparing students for future
professional success. In the workplace, the ability to prioritize tasks, meet
deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously is essential. Students
who cultivate these skills during their education are better equipped to transition
smoothly into their careers. Employers consistently seek candidates who
demonstrate strong organizational abilities and the capacity to work
independently. By mastering time management, students develop a heightened
11
sense of responsibility and self-discipline—qualities that are highly valued
across all professions.
Moreover, effective time management fosters critical thinking and
decision-making skills. When students plan their schedules, they must assess the
importance and urgency of each task, enabling them to make informed choices
about how to allocate their time. This skill is particularly invaluable in today’s
fast-paced work environments, where the ability to make swift decisions can
significantly impact project outcomes. Furthermore, students who learn to set
and achieve realistic goals within their time constraints often experience a boost
in self-confidence, which translates into a more assertive approach in their
careers.
The benefits of time management extend well beyond academic success,
equipping students with essential skills that contribute to their long-term
achievements in both personal and professional domains. By prioritizing
effective time management, students not only enhance their immediate academic
performance but also lay a solid foundation for their future endeavors. In
essence, the ability to manage time efficiently is not just a tool for success in
school; it is a vital competency that will serve students throughout their lives.
4. Methods for Effective Time Management
Effective time management is knowing how to build a reasonable and
logical schedule to effectively complete the tasks that need to be done, making
the best use of the time you have. At the same time, strictly following the set
schedule helps increase performance, productivity and achieve good results at
work. Below are 5 effective time management skills for students, helping you
control your time best.
4.1 Arrange work in order of priority
Each job has a different level of importance and difficulty. Therefore,
arranging work in order of priority will help you know how much time to spend
on each subject and when to do it.
12
You can use the Eisenhower matrix to classify work according to 3
criteria: less important, important and urgent.
4.2 Make a detailed plan
The plan is a map that guides you in time management. For college
students, it is necessary to plan your activities in advance by day, week, month
or year. You can use support tools such as calendars, notebooks, applications or
software to record and track plans.
After making a detailed plan, we need to strictly follow the plan. When
you have a specific plan, you will not waste time on useless things, and can
control the time to complete the work on time.
4.3 Break down the work to make it easier to proceed
One of the reasons why students have difficulty managing their time is
because they set themselves tasks that are too large and complicated. At that
time, you will feel pressured, worried and do not know where to start. To
overcome this, you need to break down the work into many steps.
The SMART method is an effective way for you to break down the work.
SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-
bound.
With this method, you will know what your specific goals are, determine your
abilities, resources and know how to link work to larger goals.
4.4 Take time to rest
Taking time to rest is also considered an effective method of managing
study time. When working continuously, the mind is easily distracted and
performance decreases. However, rest time should not be wasted.
Set up a regular rest schedule to maintain mental freshness. Short breaks
between study periods will help regenerate energy and increase concentration,
achieving better study results.
4.5 Summarize results at the end of the day
Summarizing results at the end of the day is considered an important step
in time management. You need to spend at least 15 minutes at the end of the day
13
to review the work done and evaluate the results and effectiveness of the
activities.
From there, you can draw lessons, propose solutions to improve yourself and
have a more comprehensive view of your time.
5. How to Maintain Discipline and Motivation
“The biggest differentiator of successful people is they simply never
quit”. It cannot be denied that motivation and discipline are undeniably
important and indispensable in the journey of seeking success. So, what should
we do to maintain discipline and motivation?
5.1 Reward yourself when tasks are completed.
Rewarding yourself when you complete tasks is a powerful way to stay
motivated and disciplined. Here are a few tips to make it work effectively:
Firstly, you can set specific goals and choose rewards you genuinely
enjoy. It means: breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and
rewarding yourself for completing each step. For instance, you can treat yourself
to something you enjoy, like a movie or a hobby. You can also pamper yourself
with self-care activities or share your accomplishments with someone who
supports you. Secondly, make the rewards proportional to the task: Bigger tasks
might call for larger rewards, while smaller tasks can be rewarded with
something simple. The reward is just enough for the effort that won't make you
bored or satisfied enough to give up the next task. Finally, celebrate your
important achievements: Don't be afraid to praise yourself and acknowledge
your hard work. In addition, you can also receive approval from your family and
friends. For example, A child who receives a reward from his mother for getting
a high score will try to get a high score tomorrow or in the following days to
receive another reward.
14
Remember, the goal is to create a positive association between completing
tasks and feeling good. By rewarding yourself, you'll reinforce the behavior and
make it easier to stay disciplined in the long run.
5.2 Tracking progress and adjusting your plan
First of all, you need to understand the Importance of Tracking. Tracking
your progress is essential for maintaining discipline and motivation. It provides
you with a clear picture of your achievements, identifies areas where you might
be struggling, and helps you stay accountable. Here are some keys to help you
track your progress: It clearly defines your goals, both short-term and long-term.
This will give you a sense of direction and purpose. Moreover, determine the
metrics that will measure your progress. These could be anything from weight
loss to number of pages read or tasks completed. Decide how often you will
track your progress. This could be daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on your
goals and preferences. Last, choose tools that work for you. This could be a
simple journal, a spreadsheet, a fitness app, or a project management tool.
Besides tracking progress, you need to adjust your plan when necessary.
Regularly review your progress to identify areas where you are succeeding and
where you might be falling short. Pinpoint any obstacles or challenges that are
hindering your progress. Since, based on your evaluation, make necessary
adjustments to your plan. If your goals are too ambitious or unrealistic, consider
adjusting them. If your current strategies aren't working, try different
approaches. In addition, adjust the amount of time or energy you dedicate to
your goals. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to seek support from friends,
family, or a mentor. Imagine yourself achieving your goals. This can help you
stay motivated and focused. Share your goals with like-minded people and you
will have a companion in conquering the tasks set.
In short, rewarding yourself tracking progress, and adjusting your plan are
all important ways to help you maintain discipline and motivation. Don’t wait
for permission to pursue those goals and look around you for motivation.
15
Beautiful examples will bring great motivation for you to maintain discipline
and reach your goals.

In conclusion, time management is a important skill that helps yours
make the most of our daily lives and work. By effectively managing your time,
you can increase productivity, reduce stress, and achieve our targets more
